I had a very disappointing experience with Mod Squad Dental regarding charges that were never disclosed in advance. As a new patient, I relied on the office to verify my insurance benefits and provide an estimate of my financial responsibility before treatment. I went for a routine regular teeth cleaning, which is 100% covered under preventive care (in and out of network). Afterward, I received an unexpected bill for a service I did not request or approve. The office manager, Beth, repeatedly insisted that the charge was a "copay." Preventive care has no copay, and even if it did, it would be a clearly defined amount like $50 or $100 --not a made-up charge or random dollar figure. When I asked for documentation that they had confirmed coverage with my insurance PRIOR to my visit, Beth said they were too busy and cited HIPAA as the reason they could not provide a recording. I did not request a recording; I simply asked for proof that the call had been made in advance, which they were unable to provide. All I received was a screenshot of call that was made to my insurance company on Feb 17, 2026, which is 3 months AFTER my visit and it was their attempt to get my insurance cover the unapproved charge that's not related to my regular cleaning. My insurance also confirmed they had no record of any call from the office prior to my visit. The office's explanations were inconsistent, initially claiming they had contacted my insurance, then later stating they don't have time to call every patient's insurance to confirm coverage. They also claimed they don't have access to the fee schedule because they are out of network, but my insurance confirmed that this information is available on their website and would have been provided if the office had actually called. The conversation grew increasingly agitated, with Beth repeatedly insisting she was too busy, and ultimately ended with her hanging up on me without any effort to find a constructive solution. I'm not sure why I should be penalized for their staffing or time constraints. As a patient, I have no way of knowing procedure codes or coverage details. That's the dentist office's responsibility to avoid issues like this one. In my 20+ years of seeing dentists or doctors across the U.S., I have never received an unauthorized or undisclosed healthcare bill. Transparency and informed consent are basic expectations in any business, and unfortunately, Mod Squad Dental failed to meet that simple standard. If you want the TLDR version, avoid this business because the billing department is horrible. They misrepresent the out-of-pocket price of services and are unapologetic about it. I was billed an additional $1800 (out of pocket) two months after services were rendered. I would recommend going to a business that is more upfront about what you're actually going to pay. I made my initial appointment for a check up on July 30th. I provided my insurance information during that appointment. Nobody made any issue of my having humana insurance. They just said "yes we accept that". On July 30th I was quoted roughly $1100 out of pocket expense which needed to be paid directly to mod squad dental to fill 4 cavities and do a deep cleaning. I agreed to this pricing and scheduled the services. The appointments were made for 09/22 and 10/06. At the end of my second visit on 10/06 they told me the out of pocket was actually $831.00 great. I paid it happily. Early December, I received a bill stating I owe mod squad dental $1858.00. I had already made an appointment to repair a filling which was too thick so while I was there, I asked them what the $1800 was regarding and the receptionist told me it "well, it's because you have Humana insurance". Ok, what does that mean? She then clarified it's because they're not in network. To be clear, my insurance pays the exact same for in network coverage as it does for out of network coverage. I'm thinking to myself, you knew you were out of network when you gave my good faith estimate. So, what would that have to do with anything? I told her that's a substantial difference and she said she'd speak to Beth the billing person. After my visit I spoke with Beth, the billing person at Mod squad and she basically reiterated that my insurance didn't cover as much as they thought. She didn't offer any other explanations and didn't really seem interested in doing so. I asked for itemized versions of my bill and explanations of what the codes referred to which she provided. I asked where my payment of $831 was reflected and never got an answer. I asked for a copy of my initial estimate and never got an answer. (I threw mine out after the $831 was paid). I disputed the bill with Humana insurance and filed a claim with the California Department of insurance. My dispute was dismissed and I was told by both parties that the billing was much higher than standard rates. I received my estimate from mod squad dental in July and had made my decision to go forward with treatment based on the estimate that was given. Mod squad dental had MONTHS to figure out their estimate was short. They did not turn in a bill to Humana insurance until all services were rendered (after my last visit on 10/6). It's not my fault that they didn't check in with the insurance carrier for 3 months. If I make an appointment with an imaging center they tentatively schedule it pending my insurances approval. Same with my allergist and ENT. Nobody does anything without approval. However, I see a dentist and I get stuck with a bill that's 300% higher than my initial estimate? Absurd I don't have any problem with mod squad dental charging whatever they want for services. That's fine. But if you do this for a living, you know roughly what insurance pays and you know if you've had issues with a specific carrier that you need to tell a client that ahead of time. If you don't want to deal with insurance, cool! Just SAY that. Don't act like it's all good and then just send a bill for 300% more after all is said and done. And to be clear, the issue isn't that they're out of network. As I stated, my insurance pays the exact same amount for in network as out of network. The issue is that they bill above standard rates. This was reiterated by a representative from the California Department of Insurance. This isn't a case of Humana just being hard to deal with or denying coverage. And considering the receptionist's response of "oh it's because you have Humana" when I asked about the extra fees, they are WELL AWARE of the pricing being out of line and they should have told me that before showing me an estimate that reflected a third of what the actual price was. There's a million ways this could have been handled and just sending a bill for 300% of the initial agreed upon price is not one of them. it deserved a phone call or at least an email saying "hey, sorry I was wrong, can we work something out?". I would have absolutely paid the difference to meet the original estimated price. But I am not paying 300% more. I have no intention of paying this bill. I will file a complaint with the department of consumer affairs and the dental board of California and If they can't help me I guess I will have to pay a collections agency because I am not paying this business. Being totally honest, if the estimate had gone up 20%? 30%? I wouldn't have had any issue with it. 300% is completely ABSURD. read more

Modsquad called me while I was traveling internationally to visit family to inform me that my upcoming cleaning appointment was being canceled due to new Friday closures. I was originally booked back in July, yet I only received notice a couple of weeks before the appointment. They attempted to reach me while I was out of the country to reschedule with a significant time difference. When they called on October 29th (a few days after the original call), they offered November 10th -- a date that doesn't work for me. The next earliest availability they could provide was December 15th, which is almost six weeks after my original appointment. When I showed reasonable frustration, the representative was dismissive and blamed the situation on not knowing I was on vacation. Perhaps, if you're a patient here, you should notify them in advance of any future travel plans -- just in case they need to unexpectedly reschedule you. I had actually planned to move forward with Invisalign at this office, after discussing recommendations with the doctor, but this experience has caused me to rethink that. I explained that I truly like their office and have been looking forward to my first cleaning there. I simply asked if they could review their schedule and call me back -- especially if they wanted to retain me as a client. Instead of diffusing the situation or offering a sincere apology, the representative abruptly said "goodbye" in a tone that felt dismissive, and hung up while I was still speaking. That was extremely unprofessional and unnecessary. Because of this experience, I'll be looking for a new dentist and will refer my family members elsewhere as well. It's disappointing that a simple rescheduling issue was handled with so little care -- and that pushing a patient out six weeks with only one alternative option is considered acceptable. I'll give them two stars because I did like the doctor and my experience in the office very much. Terrible! I will NEVER go back here nor recommend this dental practice to anyone. Made an appointment for a regular cleaning. After they took an x-ray of my teeth with some scanner machine, they need proceeded to take more while in the chair, THEN scanned by teeth! Saw the dentist. Then was called to another room for my cleaning which turned into the hygienist numbering each tooth, which then turned into "on you'll need special kind of cleaning." Like what, I asked, a deep cleaning. Mind you I just had a deep cleaning last year! An absolute WASTE OF TIME. I get my teeth cleaned twice a year. After moving to Colorado a few years ago I struggled to find a good dentist and after a couple of attempts to have have my smile corrected with dismal results, I reached back out to the team at Mod Squad dental in San Diego. I spoke with Jessica and after explaining my situation to her, she worked with Dr. Friedman to develop a comprehensive plan that included teeth whitening and four veneers, and she even reached out to the ceramic company to ensure that they would expedite the creation of the veneers to ensure the whole treatment would span the course of 1-week! On a Monday morning, Dr. Friedman and I met to talk about my smile and the issues with my bite that would require some teeth contouring to ensure the best results, and then he and his awesome assistant brightened my smile, did the contouring, and installed my temporary veneers, which looked fantastic! On Thursday morning, I headed back to the office to have the final veneers installed and they are gorgeous! This review is long over due. We moved to Scripps Ranch from Hawaii. One of the many challenges in relocating to a new state is finding the right doctors for our health care. A while a go I was told by a retired dentist that nowadays it's very difficult to find an honest dentist. I unfortunately learned that the painful way. I had a crown placed on my upper left back tooth by my old dentist in Oahu. Thereafter, I couldn't use the left side of my mouth to chew because it was very painful. I went back to this doctor twice and he insisted that there was nothing he could do about the pain. I was left in pain for over a year. When we moved to Scripps Ranch I went to see Dr. Friedman. He discovered that my previous dentist didn't clean out the old filling. Mainly because it was very hard to reach in the back of my tooth. Food was getting stuck in my old filling and causing swelling - hence the ongoing pain! Dr. Friedman fixed the entire crown and replaced it. He was gentle but adamant that the crown was perfectly adjusted. I can finally chew on my left side!!! I am super grateful and now a loyal patient. My whole family have now become patients as well. Thank you Dr. Friedman and team! Dr. Friedman and his entire staff are INCREDIBLY patient and understand about work with people who are scared to go to the dentist. They always are very careful to explain the procedures (working with the front office is also great - even during COVID - they really take time to carefully explain treatment plans). Scheduling an appointment was easy. They emailed me a simple and easy form where I filled everything out online. So much better than filling out paperwork at the office. My cleaning and exam with Anna was the best. Loved the heated massage chairs! The Doctor was very honest and set up a great plan for my teeth. He right away knew why my gums were red and constantly getting swollen. I had a bad root canal done when my husband and I were traveling Eastern Europe, he gave me great advice for treatment there as well. I sensed how this place was going to be from the initial phone call I made to make an appointment. I knew I should have just passed on this place and called someone else but I was hoping I was wrong. Sure enough I was right and the vibe was very snobby/pretentious. They made me do an X-ray before the dentist even spoke with me. After questioning why, they got very annoyed and said that is was absolutely necessary. This information should have been discussed on the phone-Had I known, I would have canceled the appt. But they sprung it on me and pressured me right then bc they knew chances are I would agree. They were right. I agreed and let them even though I knew it wasn't needed. At the end I got a quote for right under $600 for bonding on one tooth that had chipped in the corner. This office is shady, rude attitudes and unreasonably priced. My recommendation is to not come here bc they will try to gauge every cent they can and will not put your best interest first. Did you guys check to make sure you were going to get paid from my insurance and then tell me I needed it? I was absolutely never offered to have it written off as you say I was. I'm not concerned so much about paying it as I am about the radiation. Any amount of radiation is bad radiation. I don't care how small, if it's in one area or not, I am still exposed to it and it still hits my body. I did not go in there to get half my tooth fixed. I came in because my tooth had slightly chipped on the very top surface in a very small area. You don't have to be a dentist to see that there was no nerve damage and could easily be fixed. No one used physical force to get me to take the X-ray..you're out of line for suggesting I said that. Her tone however was very forceful and made me feel pressured to do it right then. I agreed and got it done but even after all of that, the picture was blurry!! The dentist that came in was polite and said she could easily fix it and that she had time right then. After getting the quote for $600 I decided against getting it repaired. I could not justify paying a hefty price for such a small job to an office that wasn't even upfront with me nor pleasant to deal with. The $600 OUT OF POCKET price is crazy and I'd never pay that for what I needed. As a matter of fact, I've already got it fixed for less than half of that out of pocket at Carmel Mountain Dentistry where they are actually genuinely nice and get the job done with no fuss. Additionally, not that it's anyone's business, I still stand by my review for Bankers Hill Dental. There are amazing people that work there and actually care about you. They are also very upfront about everything and have the most reasonable prices I've ever seen. I referred my brother there and he had nothing but good things to say about them too. The dentist that previously fixed my tooth no longer works there bc of health issues so I was in search of another great one for that kind of work. I only give honest reviews and never look for free services as you have suggested. If I give a one star review, it's because they deserved one star or less and I would not go back. Their staff is amazing. They will always greet you with a warm welcome, a smile, a high-five or maybe even a hug. Whether you are having a cleaning done by one of their amazing hygienists or a root canal done (guilty) by the professional, well-educated and personable Doc Greg Friedman, you will have comfort knowing they know exactly what they are doing, they stick to their scheduled time and seamlessly work together as a team. Once you step into Mod Squad Dental office, you will find a very warm, comforting, and inviting space. The front office staff that greets you are very friendly and always greet you with a smile. They make you feel like family! The dental staff are so kind and gentle. They make you feel so comfortable and explain every step of your treatment. I felt comfortable and at no time was I in any pain. After my cleaning, the doctor came in and we spoke about my teeth and I was very impressed with the whole process! Great experience!
