Ever since I bid goodbye to Bubbie's Ice Cream, I've been on a quest to discover the best mochi ice cream in Metro Manila. Make no mistake, I'm referring to mochi with ice cream inside and not just any kind of custard cream filling. They're two different things. A lot of places sell mochi, but don't necessarily promise ice cream. Mochi Creme, however, is a close call to the kind of dessert I was looking for.
Located at The Podium's 3rd floor, Mochi Creme is a kiosk that takes Japanese mochi, a sweetened rice confection, and combines it with magnificent flavors of ice cream to create a bite-sized ball of joy.
They ran out of coffee mochi that day, so I tried their chocolate flavor instead (P70). The ice cream itself is alright. But it's the mochi that makes the whole morsel stand out as a dessert. Once it melts, the skin is neither too thick nor too gooey, and the balanced ratio of ice cream to mochi assures that not one element can outshine the other. My only issue with Mochi Creme is that the skin of their mochi is frozen harder than Elsa's ice castle, too tough to chew on right after your purchase. Good thing I nibbled on that mochi first or else I might have broken a tooth. Lesson learned: let it thaw. read more
