You leave tired, but energized -- with that feeling that the hardest part of your day is already over, and you're ready to handle whatever comes next. I recently upgraded to three days a week, and honestly, I wish I had started sooner. My strength has improved, my cardiovascular fitness is noticeably better, and my back pain is gone. Most importantly, I can play with my three-year-old son without worrying about not being able to keep up with him. That alone has been huge. My advice: start with at least two days a week and stick with it long enough to see the gains. You will. Punch King is tough, but it works -- and you won't regret it.

Every class is an hour, but they pack in cardio, strength training, and three rounds of boxing, so you leave feeling like you got an incredible full-body workout. King will definitely push you in the best way! What I love most is that the workouts are different every day. You're constantly working different muscle groups! Even ones you didn't know could be sore. It never gets boring, and you always leave feeling stronger.

I've never taken a self-defense or martial arts class in my life. I figured it was about time, given the current circumstance of the world we live in. I took a self-defense class on riding public transit from Moses. Moses was great providing instruction and examples of the why and how on self-defense and it felt really practical. It definitely eased my anxiety a little bit considering I've often feel intimidated by the idea of just doing anything related to conflict. It also was intense and I got winded pretty quickly (and I thought I was in excellent shape from being a trained dancer and roller skater!). Just one class alone did provide a lot of value and practicality of what I need to work on when riding public transit as well as general awareness of safety now. In reality, with every skill you learn, it's going to require practice and consistency of training to stick. I'll definitely come back once I get my schedule back together.

Classes are well run and open to all levels, from beginners to experienced fighters. The atmosphere is welcoming, focused, and respectful. I've trained with Kru Sam for over 20 years. He has proven to be one of the best Muay Thai trainers in the world. Over the last 25 years, he has developed multiple world champions and helped launch the careers of some of San Francisco's top Muay Thai and MMA fighters. His teaching is clear, technical, and patient. He gives the same attention to new students as he does to seasoned fighters. He also hosts fight events, giving his students real opportunities to compete. This gym has a strong and supportive community. Everyone trains hard and looks out for one another. If you want real Muay Thai with world-class coaching and a team that feels like family, World Muay Thai Team USA is the place to be.

The coaches are skilled, personable, and really love to see when you're improving. The other students are welcoming and all putting in their best effort to better themselves all for various reasons, and if you're doing the same, you're gonna make some solid friendships here. Kru Sam is actually from Thailand and knows the traditions of the art and still goes back himself or sends students there regularly to train, which may be part of why he's trained so many champions. If you're looking to compete, a place to learn how to defend yourself, or even a place to get in a solid workout, give it a shot!

I have been to Bay Breakers a few times already and have had a great experience each time. Beginner class: I love that they offer free glove rentals for the beginner classes, which is perfect if you're just starting out and don't know yet if you want to commit to purchasing your own gloves/equipment. In Daniel's classes, he always starts with a jump rope warmup (a great workout on its own IMO, even though it's only for a few minutes) and walks the class through the numbered punches before working on some combos together. I have taken some other boxing classes around SF which tend to be more fitness-oriented (like Rumble?), and this class was a bit different since it was more focused on stance and technique, which I really appreciated to help build familiarity and confidence. Gym: My understanding is the gym is still getting up and running, so some of the areas are still unfinished (e.g., one of the restrooms). That being said, the main gym/workout areas are all good to go (as far as I can tell). There are cubbies at the back of the gym which feel safe since they're far away from the main door on Van Ness, curtained off changing areas, restrooms, showers, etc. Location: It's on Van Ness which is relatively easy to get to. There's a MUNI bus stop right outside, and a few other routes around the nearby intersections. With my current schedule, I'm unable to come to Bay Breakers as often as I'd prefer, but I always enjoy the experience here and look forward to coming more often in the future hopefully.
