This time, the place that I highly recommend is located on Plac Nowy in Kazimierz and is colloquially called "Okrąglak" due to the round shape of the building.
The best for "Okrąglak" is in the evening/night, when munchies attack, or whenever you feel like having a snack. It's not a gourmet food, so be prepared, but the 'zapiekanka' will fill your belly in a satisfying way.
My favorite 'zapiekanka' is a classic version, and it comes with just three ingredients: baguette, mushrooms and cheese, that's all. With a splash of ketchup and garlic sauce (sometimes), it's the perfect combination.
There are many options of toppings to choose from. Everyone will find something which suits their preferences and appetite.
Making the decision where to buy from your 'zapiekanka' could be overwhelming. In each window of the building there is a different kitchen/bar where food is sold. It's like a wheel of 'zapiekanki'. Of course, it's good to go where there is the longest line, but it doesn't work that way every time.
We tried two places, 'Zapiekanki Bar Oko' and 'Zapiekanki Piecyk'. I know that you won't see a big difference between these two sandwiches in my photo, but the 'Piecyk' was definitely the runaway winner.
It's all about the ratio of bread, mushrooms and cheese. It must be moist with a perfectly crispy outside baguette (not too crunchy), with gooey cheese and flavorful mushrooms with a hint of butter. The quality of ketchup is also very important.
The legendary 'Endzior', which we skipped this time due to their long line, is also a must-try.
For now, I'm voting for 'Piecyk' :).
Also, you can buy just half 'zapiekanka', or ask for it to be cut in half to share. It's usually huge :).
