So here's the thing, lots of barbers give a standard series of cuts. You can usually guess what…read morestyle to expect by the kind of people waiting and the cost. $10 cuts, old dudes w/ whitewalls and grouchy politics? You're coming out with a gi joe high top. 35 bones, hot washcloth and tattoos? The Vancouver special, aka the post hipster nihilistic spiffy. Double that price, permanents, dog treats and growling? You're in a dog salon, you can't afford that. Nobody can. However, at Barbers Legacy while watching Shant work on each of the three completely unique dudes before me (about 30 mins) I had an epiphany. Whilst being very open and questioning each diverse customer amongst friendly yet not too expansive chit chat, Shant was hacking their very souls. Ballet student, older urban beard product guy, palm tree sock dude, all said generally what they wanted but all came out with exactly what they needed. I personally, purposefully gave vague instructions. Shant told me when my last haircut was based on my preferred side length and snip, snap, was told by my wife that my haircut actually (?) looked hip for once (really?). My epiphany? Never play poker with this shark but definitely let him cut my hair. Grab a coffee at aperture nearby while you wait.

So first off, there's no doubt that there are good/great barbers here and they do amazing cuts and…read morefades. I went to this place for months, I thought I found a barber I liked, was finally confident going into a barber shot and coming out with a great cut. However, for a haircut to be$50 as a base price, and then to add on the tip afterwards, is a bit ridiculous for a haircut. Here's the problem I have. I was going to the same barber for months, getting the same haircut. And me I always tip my barbers well, so I was tipping about 20%. Let me get into the math for you. The haircut I was getting was $35. The annoying thing about Knowledge Barbers is that they charge tax. So a $35 dollar haircut is actually $38 and a $45 haircut is $50. So with a $35 haircut with tax and tip I was already paying around $45. So one day, when I come in for a haircut, my barber told me he got upgraded to senior barber so the haircuts will be $10 more, but with their tax it's actually a little more. Also, this is the only barbershop I have ever been that has tax on their haircuts, what you see is not what you pay here. Even other barbershops in Vancouver don't do this. So to be honest. I don't think they respect loyal customers here. To pay $50 for a haircut is a bit ridiculous. I don't see why customers could pay cash here and save on tax. I think if a barber gets upgraded then old customers should be grandfathered into the original price they were getting their haircuts for.

The only problem was that I desperately needed a haircut and didn't have an appointment anywhere! After striking out at two other barbershops, my third stop brought me to Everest Barbers, where I met the owner. I told him I was planning to propose, and without hesitation, he put me straight into the chair and took care of me. He truly hooked me up--I looked and felt great for one of the biggest moments of my life. Later that day, I surprised my girlfriend with the ring and a photographer--and, of course, she said yes! I was touched by the owners generosity and I'll always be grateful for his kindness and helping me look my best on such an important day. If I'm ever back in Vancouver, Everest Barbers will be my first stop. Highly recommended!

Somehow he makes coming in for a haircut seem like a lifestyle you wish was your everyday life. Smooth & skillful, he makes full use of many quality tools he has gathered over time. He makes it comfortable enough for personal conversation without chatting your ear off, trying to upsell you or talking overly about himself. The atmosphere is warm, soothing and inviting enough to make you wish you had a free day to just kick back inside to swap stories with him and enjoy his wall of collectible whiskies. (Yes, he has at least one story about Mt Everest. But it's probably not the one you're expecting.) His experience makes his work seem effortless as if his shears operate solely by muscle memory. But his attention to detail is very keen. Having never met before today, he quickly and correctly assessed how much time had passed since my last cut. I finished and rejoined my friends and family. But hours later we passed back down the sidewalk where Amar & some friends stood talking outside of his shop. He enthusiastically waved us over & greeted us all. As we parted and continued on our way, one of our group said, "man, I wish I was friends with that guy!" Vancouver, don't sleep on this man. He may just be the last of the renaissance gentlemen barbers. ¡Que suave!
