Dragon roll
Mumtaz P.

I got a baked dragon roll to go. It was good. I knew the baked rolls take at least 20 minutes to bake so I'm happy I preordered for pick up. The inside was nice with lots of folks eating lunch. I'd come back to try more. The cashier was friendly and quick to wrap my order to go. She even said my name correctly! Thats a big PLUS.

Deluxe Handroll

After being a regular at the Fremont location, I decided to give MJ Sushi in Menlo Park a try and it did not disappoint. Even arriving just an hour before closing, the service was fantastic. Our waitress was attentive and we never felt rushed to finish. We ordered the soft shell crab, the deluxe hand roll, hot sake, and a cold beer to wash it all down. Everything was just as fresh as I expected. I'll definitely be back when I'm in the area!

Monster Roll

Sushi on a budget and generous portions is what you'll get when you come here. This is a shout out to Cherylynn because if it wasn't for her review I wouldn't have come here. Thanks to the Queen B I we got our sushi fix without breaking the bank. We ordered the items that were recommended by Miss SF and our chill server. I'm not a roll person but the Monster roll and San Francisco roll were pretty good. I went with the Chirashi bowl and Deluxe and they totally hit the spot. We also ordered the Chicken Karaage which was Hella good and their Tempura appetizer. The service was on point and the bill wasn't one of those where you don't want to know the price, lol. It gets crowded so if you want your elbow room, um not happening but what do you expect with these prices. And that's my take on it, Peace...

Great casual spot for everyday Japanese! Quick service, good quality food, good prices. This place will certainly be a regular for us! Forgot to take photos of the Caterpillar and Salmon and Avocado rolls! Both were very good. Looking forward to returning when I'm not pregnant so I can try more raw fish rolls; saw other customers ordering various rolls which all looked very delicious. Two of us went on a Saturday at around 6pm without a reservation and the restaurant was about half full.

4.5 STARS Budget Sushi. Let's be real, sushi can be stupid expensive and sometimes you just want to hit that raw craving without making your wallet cry. Say less....MJ Sushi! MJ Sushi started in Fremont and their Menlo Park is the 5th location in the Bay that opened last summer. Other locations: Palo Alto, Foster City, and Danville. Super behind on this review but after multiple visits, they're my top 3 favs for "budget sushi" (along with Amami Sushi and Basa Seafood). It's close to 280 N so perfect place to hit up for dinner after Stanford Shopping Center on the way back to the city. Open for takeout, delivery, indoor dining, and outdoor dining. Dog-friendly. M E N U MJ Sushi is best known for their affordable sushi rolls ($14.99 or less) but they also have an array of your usual Japanese apps (gyoza, tempura, karaage, tataki, etc), sashimi/nigiri, and teriyaki dishes. No bento, ramen, or udon. For the first 6 months or so of their opening, drinks were FREE (bottled water, tea, soda, and beer.) Since some peeps were pressed over receiving free bottled water, they now serve tap water only. F O O D * Takoyaki: Deep-fried Octopus Balls w/ bonito, mayo, unagi (6 pc - $6.99): https://tinyurl.com/yuwcws9r Solid, freshly made with a crisp exterior and custardy center with chewy pieces of octopus and savory sweet sauces. * Chicken Karaage: Japanese Fried Chicken ($7.99) Decent, tender thigh meat but prefer more ginger-garlicky essence. Served with an aioli dipping sauce. * Tempura App: Shrimp and Assorted Veggies (10 pc - $7.99) This has been an consistent order, the fresh shrimp and veggies are hand battered. The tempura is hot and crunchy with a thin batter. For veggies, you get kabocha, sweet potato, carrot, and broccoli. * Handrolls: - Salmon + Avocado Handroll ($5.99) - Deluxe w/ uni, o-toro, ikura, shiso leaf, fresh wasabi ($10.99): https://tinyurl.com/2netkdtj Generous portion of fresh fish in the handrolls but the seaweed isn't crispy. For the price, the deluxe handroll with luxe uni and otoro is the way to go! * Monster Roll w/ shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, crab, avocado, tempura crunchies, house special sauce, unagi sauce ($14.99): https://tinyurl.com/2hn9x6eb While I'm not usually a roll person, this is delicious! Nice contrasting textures and flavors from the crunchy shrimp tempura (freshly fried), soft avocado+tuna+crab, and spicy savory sweetness from the sauces. Good ratio of ingredients, light on the rice, and tightly wrapped. * Sashimi Deluxe: Chef's Choice (20 pc - $50.99): https://tinyurl.com/2wa2nbzd A go-to order every time, it has mostly been solid. Great presentation served over crushed ice and adorned with flowers, the sashimi deluxe includes sake (salmon), hamachi (yellowtail), bincho-maguro (albacore), hotate (scallop), chu-toro (medium fatty tuna), and otoro (fatty tuna). Nice, thick cuts (w/ no jagged edges) and decent quality for the price. Our favs are always the rich chu-toro and buttery otoro. They don't charge extra for a side of fresh wasabi! Add two bowls of rice (99 cents each) or sushi rice ($1.99 each), and you have a deconstructed chirashi for two for cheap. S E R V I C E Staff is awesome! Very customer oriented AND efficient...great for a quick meal. Even times when we were the only ones outside, we never feel neglected and the staff always makes sure we're comfortable (i.e. asking if we want the heaters on). A M B I A N C E Low-key, small dining area with 7 tables inside and 4 outside. No seating at the sushi bar. P A R K I N G Plentiful parking in Sharon Heights Shopping Center. Overall, if you're looking for top-tier quality fish, this isn't it. BUT, if you're looking for value-driven sushi to hit that raw craving without going broque, MJ Sushi is the place to go to. Four stars for the food but adding .5 stars and rounding up for the great customer service and outdoor seating.

Red dragon (left) and MJ roll
Katyayini K.

Great quality fish at an incredibly reasonable price for the Palo Alto area! The MJ roll was fantastic - will get this the next time I go! The red dragon roll was also good but the shrimp tempura wasn't fried recently and so was a lil soggy when they served it to us. The chicken karage was very bland - the sriracha aioli with it was the only flavour it had.

Chirashi
Con C.

Chirashi bowl decent for the price but a lot of rice. Teriyaki beef was beautifully cooked and tempura was excellent. Friendly fast service. Tables inside and out with cute decorations. Packed on a Friday night. Definitely worth checking out.

Ata M.

We usually get takeout, since the place is pretty small inside and that can cause a wait. Service is equally great every time. The sushi is fresh and tasty, and the portion sizes are equal to better than most other places - at way more reasonable prices. You can order for pick up and usually it takes no more than 20minutes. They have beer and soda as drink options. Rainbow roll, scallop roll, mango roll and the gyoza are some of our favorites!

Great sushi and beer and soda on the house! Rolls were big and great tasting. The chicken karage was also good.

anita t.

Sushi was good. We got some standard rolls like shrimp tempura along with some specialty rolls like the dragon, mj roll and some others. All were good. Service was friendly and quick. I would recommend.

Akiko I.

Service was 5 star. There was an older gentleman working there and he was very attentive and doing his best. The other lady was super friendly and provided great service. The sushi rolls could be rolled tighter since it was falling apart as I picked up with my chopsticks. But the flavors were good and the price was good Nice neighborhood place to go to!

The food is delicious. I don't like sushi (don't hate me), so I ordered the gyoza and the veggie tempura. The gyoza was outstanding. The sauce they make for it is scrumptious. The tempura was also delicious. It had sweet potatoes, carrots, zucchini, and broccoli. My husband got the mango secret roll which had sweet potato tempura inside and he loved that too. I would definitely come back. There were three of us, and we wanted to sit outside, so the owner rearranged the tables for us. Really great service. Prices are good. Free first drink. Inside looks beautiful and very clean (and is air conditioned). I'm thrilled at this new addition to the neighborhood and look forward to coming back.

Great spot for sushi that recently opened in Menlo Park. I had been to the Fremont location before so I knew what to expect in terms of menu. The young lady staffing the service operations was very friendly. Everything came out quickly and was fresh and well-prepared. I wish this location all the best!

The space is intimate, with only 8 counter seats, so you're served directly by chef Li. To my surprise, all of the seats were full on a Friday at lunch. I didn't want to drink too much at lunch, but they had a $29 sake flight of three 1.5 oz pours, which was just the right amount to pair with the sushi but still be able to go back to work after lunch! Pre sushi: 1. Pickled baby ginger: I love this stuff, and he was good about refilling it 2. Crab with Japanese citrus jelly and shiso: a generous amount of sweet, fresh crab 3. Ankimo: two pieces, served with wasabi 4. Signature octopus: massaged 1 hour and stewed 1 hour - very flavorful and tender 5. Steamed abalone: served over soba with abalone liver sauce 6. Seaweed shot 7. Chawanmushi with scallops and caviar Sushi: 1. Hokkaido scallop with yuzu and sea salt 2. Spanish mackerel 3. Akami: lean bluefin tuna 4. Kinmedai: golden eye snapper, torched 5. Isaki: 3 line grunt fish 6. Kelp cured black snapper, shiso leaf, yuzu 7. Chutoro 8. Saba: mackerel with kelp 9. Otoro: torched, topped with uni The scallop and kinmedai were the highlights for me. We also got one of the à la carte add ons: the hand chopped fatty tuna and uni hand roll. To finish: red miso soup At the end, you can watch the chef preparing the bento boxes, which was a good reminder for me to keep my eye out for the next available pickup. The fish was high quality, and the pieces were cut to the right size (I've been to way too many places with unappealingly large cuts). Each course was thoughtfully prepared, and pacing was consistent. For the quality and quantity of food, as well as the service and dining experience, this was a hot deal for $125 a person. We will definitely be coming back!

What I ordered: Stanford roll: it had a nice mix of spicy tuna, crab, avocado, hamachi, with the sauces tying everything together really well Nigiri combo: 9 pieces of chef's choice fish and a lot of them were fish belly cuts which are fattyyyyy and melt in your mouth Hamachi lover: surprisingly my 2nd favorite (I normally don't like hamachi that much). It has hamachi, avocado and then hamachi on top, each bite was a big mouthful piece, so yummy Super salmon roll: this was probably my most favorite, especially the torched salmon and tobiko on top. Salmon wrapped around spicy salmon and cucumber. Overall, everything tasted clean and well balanced, nice rice ratio. Nothing felt off, I had no complaints at all. After we ordered, we received a complimentary edamame. Since we were the only ones seated, we received a lot of attention from the staff. Overall, the fish quality was great! The salmon don was garnished with a bit of shiso, which I had initially set aside. A staff member noticed, and mentioned that it was his favorite, and it pairs great with the salmon. My taste buds unfortunately disagree, but it was kind nonetheless for him to step up. As for appetizers, the agedashi tofu was soft, and the sauce was light and pleasant. The karaage was juicy.

We really recommend checking out their off menu items (they will hand you a hand-written note when you get there) because the chef is just clearly so talented. Here are the highlights: * Ankimo Nigiri (off menu): Have to be honest, I was actually pretty scared to try ankimo (Google said it's monkfish liver - like who even dare to eat liver ), but I'm so glad I did. It wasn't fishy or difficult to eat at all, but incredibly rich and creamy. I'm obsessed!!! * Otoro (off menu): This was the star. The tuna belly was pure umami, super fatty, buttery, and literally melted the second it hit my tongue - really recommend ordering this one * Lobster Roll (off menu): As a girl who's on calories deficit, my body screams for help when I found out it had shrimp tempura (I tried to avoid fried food), but this roll was so damnnnnn savory! It's made of lobster, shrimp tempura and a combo of eel sauce, spicy mayo, and tobiko - no need anymore dipping sauce cause they were just phenomenal * Kaisen: This was a refreshing roll - made of tuna, salmon, hamachi (yellowtail), and white tuna. Shiso (perilla) really enhanced the flavor of the fish and brought fresh taste that I think is the best pairing for any sushi/sashimi dish * Woodside Roll: This was the only miss for us. It uses minced spicy tuna, which honestly ruined the texture and flavor of the fish. We prefer tasting the real meat rather than a mash :( Overall, we like everything that we order, and our bill came out at around $100 for all that we had (budget friendlyyyyy) and we were really satisfied with the sushi quality.
