I love coming here on cold, sunny winter days. It almost feels like you are walking outside and getting some fresh air and for a moment you can forget about winter! It's also delightful to get a change in scenery between the tropical dome and the desert dome. The seasonal/exhibit dome is usually interesting too! This really is a lovely Milwaukee gem. And, you cannot beat the entry price and free parking. read more

This is a Milwaukee institution that needs to be preserved. In town for the holidays and decided to visit when we saw that the Kooky Cooky house from our youth was on display here. We also thought this was a good thing to do on a very cold day. It was very busy since their winter farmer's market was going on which was fun to stroll through - we sampled a lot of good products before heading over to the domes. It was nice studying the plants in the tropical and the desert domes. The displays are well done. Very educational and a nice bit of warm weather in a Wisconsin winter for just $7 admission. The highlight was the Kooky Cooky house display that was a Christmas fixture at Capitol Court during the old days. What a kick to see this fairly accurate recreation. Kudos to those who brought this back to life. Always a good choice for those touring Milwaukee. read more

I went to "The Domes" as Wisconsinites lovingly call them, with my sister & most adorable nephews a couple of weeks ago. My sister has heard it was a free day so we arrived at 1pm, only to find out the free day ended at Noon! Bummer! So she shelled out the $24 for the 4 of us which isn't a huge amount of money but still not as good as free. This fun horticultural experience is divided into three domes - Desert, Tropical and the Show Dome. It takes just about 30 minutes to walk through each dome so I wouldn't go in planning to spend more than a couple hours at the domes. A great little touch they have is some free coat racks to hang up your coat (at your own risk). The tropical dome gets hot and not wearing a heavy winter coat inside was definitely much appreciated. My sister liked the dessert dome best and I liked the tropical dome best. My sister is 39 and I'm 29, yet we are immature and were amused by all the phallic foliage. My nephews particularly loved the Show Dome! They didn't want to leave. It was circus themed with some creepy paper mache clowns & other circus characters and an awesome model train town. We watched the trains for what seemed like forever. They had so many cool trains on the track including a Thomas the Tank train! All in all, it's a fun place to experience and walk around for a bit of a break. If I lived in the area, I would absolutely get a membership to just take a weekly walk through. read more

Definitely worth a visit on a cool but bright and sunny day. Really enjoyed the warmth of the sun and all the amazing plants of the three different domes. We really enjoyed looking deeper into the different gardens beds for some of the unusual and more hidden treasures. We spent about 1-1/2 hrs walking through. read more

This place is underwhelming to say the least. There's a cute Winnie the Pooh theme but that's about it. Lots of information about select plants inside varying from sensitive plants (they fold when you touch them) to various peppers. They even have poisonous mini frogs around. No worries though - Since they're inside the conservatory, they don't have access to whatever chemical makes them toxic. But they're adorably cute little frogs. There's also a student discount so bring your ID if you have it read more

If it's the middle of winter. If it's cold out. If you're going stir crazy and need to surround yourself in some feel good atmosphere then Mitchell Park Conservatory is the oasis to go visit. Simply put it will help cure your winter blues. As is known there are 3 domes. First dome we hit was the tropical dome. Sitting at a balmy 80 deg F you will walk into heaven. This dome has so much to look at, so much lucious growth, so much feel good it makes winter melt away. Second dome we went to was the desert dome which was 60 deg F. Surprising but still a far cry from the 26 deg F outside. In this dome is a desert of palms through paths that lead past many cactuses with some of the wildest and intriguing geometric forms. It just felt great in there. Last but not least we went through the final dome the floral dome which was set up for the Christmas expose. All the domes are the same size but in this dome it is left more open to set up for different special displays. It was a gorgeous room filled with perennials (I think) and a host of other trees and such. Before we left we went through the gift shop and bought some of the foliage they cut/trim and brought a little bit of the Domes home with us. It was a great visit and we will definitely come back again. This is the place to cure the winter blues! read more

Went to Milwaukee on a little road trip with the family and since it was my dad's birthday. Had a very good time! Admission was reasonable at $9 per person for out of state people, and they have senior discounts as well but apparently only for in state people as well as student discounts. It has several domes (3) that have different themes (dessert, tropical, etc). Very nicely taken care of with plants of the different themes and very good explanations. Takes probably and hour to hour and a half to get through it. One of the domes also had a dinosaur type theme as well as a gazebo which was cute. Well maintained. Very beautiful flowers. The conservatory also has a gift shop inside. Parking is free and outside the conservatory. They also have a children's play/educational resource center which was nice. No inside restaurant. Bathrooms inside as well as a nice seating area. Would recommend when visiting Milwaukee! read more

Unfortunately we picked a bad time to have Spring Break. Everyone started at the Desert Dome. Lots of cool desert plants with fake animals here and there. The one way path was easy to follow and if I didnt have a 2.5 yr old with me, I would have spent more time reading about each plant. Off to the next dome, The Tropical Dome. I felt the heat when I first walked in. We definitely were not dressed for that climate! Big leafed plants are cool, ferns not so much. Get me out of that heat! Next dome...wait what? Thats it? The third, Show Dome, is closed for the week. My husband didn't read the fine details when he made a reservation. We sat on a bench for about 10 minutes just to say we were there for at least half an hour. If I ever go back, which I probably wont, I defintely wont bring a toddler. read more

It's beautiful here! We visited on a cold and rainy weekend and seeing the flowers in bloom was so nice. There's plenty of room for strolling and it wasn't too hot inside. The parking is FREE and close to the entrance. When you check in and pay your admission fee, you can see a small cooler that sells beverages you can enjoy while strolling. There are some tables inside as well where you can enjoy a snack (I think it's bring your own). I visited with just hubby so I didn't pay attention to any of the kid stuff like snack availability. This was a great place to stop in a for awhile, but it's not a whole day affair like the zoo. Check it out! read more

As much as I loved the domes, the tour guide (Mr. Pete) could brush up on his social skills

If you are north of down town Chicago it is only 70 minutes to get to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Border check points at the Cheddar Curtain will not delay your trip and as long as you pay attention to the speed limit signs your trip North will be quick and uneventful. I mention the speed limit signs because on the 40 miles or so from Illinois to Milwaukee on I-94 I saw at least 8 either county sheriffs or State Troopers going both ways up and back and at least 4 of those State Troopers were providing some verbal guidance to parked cars on the shoulder of the road. Be smart. Enough for the road advice. The Mitchell Park Domes seem to rise up out of a normal middle class Milwaukee neighborhood right infant of your eyes and are a sight to behold even before you venture inside. We visited on a Wednesday morning and the crowds were light but I was still surprised to see a number of young families with children. I guess on this early March day it is a way to get outside while staying inside. This botanical garden is made up of three large glass domes with different environments in each. We started our journey in the Desert dome. This dome was filled with desert plants from all over the world. Succulents and Cactus aren't really my thing but when you have a large grouping of them the colors and textures are really very nice. Next along our walk was a visit into the moist Tropical forest that brings you in to the world of lush green plants and colorful flowers. The contrast from our first stop was amazing. We took advantage of the benches more than once and just sat there and soaked it all in. Last stop was the display dome that changes often through out the year. Today it was, " The Attack of the Giant Monster2" along with a number of model trains running around the exhibition. Thomas the Train was a big hit with the younger crowd. While moms enjoyed the flora the kids followed Thomas as he roamed around the domes floor. A few things to remember cameras are welcome but no tripods. If you are a member of Chicago's Botanical Garden and you have your membership card your entrance fee is waved if not is still under $10.00 and is money well spent. So go ahead and hoop into the family minivan and head north for a relaxing visit to this not so hidden gem. read more

Also known as "The Domes," Mitchell Park Conservatory is a series of three connected domes housing plants from different locations and climates. While the Domes were fun to walk around, I found the cost of entry exorbitant for how long you actually spend at the Domes - $8 per adult! And we probably spent only 20-30 minutes inside. The Show Dome - which has seasonal floral displays - really didn't impress us. It had blue-dyed water and fish toys hung over the water. It felt really artificial, and so we just made a quick loop around it and then hoped the other domes were more impressive. They were. Next, we went to the Desert Dome, which houses cacti and succulents from the American Southwest, Africa, Madagascar, South America, and Mexico. We saw some really interesting plants in this dome and spent considerably more time here than the Show Dome. Lastly, we explored the Tropical Dome, which is home to over 1,200 species of tropical plants. There were also a few birds inside (I was shocked that they don't have double doors to catch any birds that might fly out the doors when they're open!). This dome was also a joy to explore. Overall, it was a very quick trip for us and so the $8 admission seemed really high! But it was fun to visit once! read more

Totally enjoy the Domes overall. My suggestion is to go later in the day if you enjoy taking photos since people may wind up in your photos. Your entire visit shouldn't take more than 60 minutes if you go later on to take photos My only suggestion is to have one late night once a month if possible since not everyone can come before 4pm. Or a reduced admission for other visitors outside of Milwaukee County one day a month But I noticed No Food Allowed signs. My suggestion is to get a snack bar of some sort then. read more

Not just a boring Botanic Garden, but three different beautifully curated, interactive, fun and themed domes/gardens! My favorite is definitely the show garden, which was decorated with the Christmas theme that is absolutely magical. Who would expect to find a sleigh or organ in the midst of a Botanical Garden!? It feels like I've walked through the wardrobe and entered Narnia! There are activity sheets for you to pick out interesting or peculiar things in the gardens, which I thought was an absolute great idea, not only interesting and interactive for children but highly educational for adults too! Easily the best Botanic Garden I've been to! read more

Who doesn't love parks on a sunny day? Well this one is more than that. Come by to play in the grass or go for a long walk. Even play hoops in the back of the park. But if you want more horticulture happiness pay the entrance fee to visit the domes. Whether you like tropical or desert plants they have you covered. Succulents or orchids? Giant bird of paradise or barrel cactus? They got that. And if you like teeny tiny plants visit the show dome for a miniature train and landscape display. Kids can enjoy the scavenger hunt while adults enjoy the variety of botany in the dome. The gift shop is small but cute. Lots of affordable items and real plants to cherish your visit. Would I go back? Absolutely. It's a fun day out. Keep visiting this unique place so it stays open for all. read more

After a recent visit I couldn't be more pleased! This place is definitely a hidden gem of Milwaukee! When I visited only the tropical and the desert dome were open. At first I was bummed about this but I ended up being more than content with just two domes open! In terms of what there is to see both domes were in tip top shape! I was amazed to see such a variety of plants here! I went on a weekday afternoon and I was pleasantly surprised to see quite a few other people there as well! In terms of the plants on display this place is amazing but in terms of facilities it could be improved slightly. If I understand correctly the domes are over 50 years old and could use some renovations. This is completely understandable particularly because this is county operated. I would really like to see some renovations in the future but as for now, I'll be back. read more

I have been visiting "The Domes" for over 20 years and it is always a pleasurable and relaxing visit. The $7 per adult entrance fee is all it costs to have access to all three domes/temperate zones which change each season (desert oasis, tropical jungle & floral gardens). There are several plants to explore and a few birds that make a grand presence every now and again. The conservatory is a great place to spend some time should you want to explore nature or if it is simply a gray day outside and you need a boost of nature to enliven your soul. I reside in the Chicagoland suburbs and always look forward to my biannual visits. Take some time out and stop by "The Domes" for a nature break.....don't forget to stop by the quaint gift shop which also sells plants and has reasonable prices. read more

I made a comment once and I firmly standby it: If you don't like The Domes, you are not human. With the daily grind of freeways and high rise buildings, video games and internet, I think all of us blur our connection to nature at times. I don't care how many PS3 games you own or how full your closet is with designer suits, fact is we're children of nature just like all the rest of the critters out there. It's healing to be reminded of this, to "catch some sun", watch the ocean, or just take a walk in the park. These little natural getaways we fit into our city lives are often what can keep us grounded in the reality that the planet is an amazing place, much more than tonight's episode of American Idol or that new pair of shoe from the mall. When it comes to natural gems in the heart of a city, nothing rocks my mind like The Domes. Nothing. Three enormous domes, each they're own climate, filled with hundreds of plants and flowers. They're everywhere, it's breathtaking, the smell is just amazing. We're talking Wisconsin here, frigid Midwest territory. In the middle of a 10 degree day I can jump right into a paradise, sites and scents slowing me down to relax mode like only the beauty of nature can do. I've sat on benches for an hour, just breathing deep and looking up. I've seen the preparation of weddings, couples who love it here so much they chose this very spot for their vows. I've watched little kids switch between standing in shock from all that's around them to running around with delight. The Arid, The Tropical, and The Flower Show. Each their own dome, connected in the middle so you can literally step through one world into the next. I wouldn't trade The Domes for anything. I would live in here if I could, I absolutely love it. I loved it as a little kid, I love it today, and I can't wait to show my kids around some day. Without places like this I just wouldn't know what to do. read more

We would bring guests from other cities to see the domes. We were bussed in as a child to see the glory, and incredible domes. I always wondered if other places had domes as nice as we do. It is a place to reinforce lessons in either math or science. or biology in here you will learn about the different types of weather some would say its desert, tropic and flower gardens. It's a pretty nifty setup that reminded me of Chicago's Botanic Gardens. Luckily, everything in Milwaukee is a lot closer, and so the hike out to the Mitchell Park Conservatory from downtown is nowhere near the hassle that is Chicago traffic and distance. Set against the backdrop of Miller Park, Mitchell Park is pretty cool to approach. Once there, the domes are all the eyes can see, and it's pretty glorious. There's a small cover to get in, but the sights are pretty worth it. The dome with the model trains is by far my favorite, and yes, I'm an absolute sucker for model trains. The desert and tropical domes are fun as well. read more

Decided to take advantage of the free admission (Mondays for Milwaukee residents) with my Mom and Grandma. Was a great way to spend time together because you can be social while walking around. The variety of plants was pretty diverse and we enjoyed the decor of the Holiday themed dome..something they apparently change regularly. When compared to Garfield Park Conservatory in Illinois, I'm not as impressed (regarding size or plant variety), but rated independently it isn't half bad - just needs some maintenance. While I can't see spending an entire day here, it was a relaxing way to kill an hour or two and a warm retreat from the winter weather. read more

Gotta love the domes, especially in winter. All three domes are pretty cool, but the desert dome is probably my favorite. $7 to get in, $5 with student ID or senior citizen. The domes are big, but it doesn't take too long to see all three. However some people make a day out of it by hanging out and reading a book in the warm bright winter sun. Hey why not. It's a great way of escaping winter if only for a few hours. There's maybe 5 or 6 tables in the atrium that folks hang out and eat lunch. There are vending machines and a gift shop in the atrium as well. Milwaukee county residents can get in free with I.D. from 9am to noon on Mondays (I think holidays are excluded). The domes are popular on Mondays for that reason, and there are usually lots of kids there on field trips. The kids are usually gone by noon or shortly after if that's something you want to avoid. read more

As someone raised in Milwaukee, the Mitchell Park Conservatory aka the Domes has always been a part of life. I've got many a family photo taken in the Domes where I'm wearing an awful frilly dress or worse yet, plaid pants (thanks Mom for being so fond of those...). The Domes were the site of annual school field trips and my junior prom was here too - involving yet another frilly, awful dress. As an adult, I have a renewed appreciation for the Domes - and it's not just because I no longer have to dress like an idiot when I visit. When you live in a city with long, dark winters it's great to know that you can spend less than $7 to feel like you're in the tropics for a few hours. The show dome changes a few times per year, but always seems to have the model railroad set up that kids love. I personally like the desert dome because it's warm but not sweaty and sometimes you get to see awesome cactus flowers. There must be a small army of people that work behind the scenes to keep all the greenery looking so picture perfect - it really is impressive. Beyond plant appreciation, the Domes hosts a lot of fun events. This winter, they've had a few "mini ethnic festivals" celebrating Chinese New Year, Turkey, Poland, Ireland and Germany. They host the Winter Farmers Market. Every Thursday is "Music under Glass" with a live band. If you haven't checked this stuff out yet, what are you waiting for? read more

As a transplant to Milwaukee, it's very hard for me to understand how the voters here have forsaken this wonderful, historic park and indoor garden. I learned more about the conservatory and park in John Gurda's "The Making of Milwaukee," in my heart the Domes symbolize all that's wonderful about my new home. Neglected by democratically elected officials across two political parties, we citizens only have ourselves to blame for the sad deterioration of these unique greenhouse gardens. The park is still a peaceful place for relaxing, picnics, an objective for an afternoon bike ride. read more

A nice spot to escape to in the dead of winter. There was nothing going on in the third dome, but the two I visited were small, but lovely. There were many families there as it was the weekend, and there was a Pokémon event going on, but while full, it didn't seem too crowded. They're taking advantage of the off season to do some fixing up, so some sections were blocked off, but otherwise that wasn't an issue. A cool little spot to check out when it's cold out. read more

Funny thing about this place; it was a lot bigger and odoriferous when I visited as a child... A Milwaukee landmark that gets taken for granted, the Mitchell Park Conservatory is a nicely maintained indoor botanical garden open year-round. Each glorified greenhouse (or dome) has its own theme with a 'Show Dome' that changes with the season. It's a nice place to see flora not indigenous to this part of the country. I uploaded a few pictures that capture only a fraction of the beauty. See for yourself. Take your girlfriend, take your grandmother, take yourself and do some thinking. When it's the middle of winter and your SAD kicks in, what's a girl (or guy) to do? Head over to the Domes! Even on the gloomiest of days, this place is bright and cheery! Bring a lunch and a good book and spend as much time as you need soaking up some sunlight. They sell wine, beer and soda! (Probably water, too, but who looks for THAT?) :) Each dome has seating scattered throughout and there is also a seating area in the main lobby, all great vantage points for people watching! The small gift shop doesn't really sell that much that is plant related, more so your regular Milwaukee kitsch...books, postcards and jewelry. They do sell a very small assortment of common plants, but the plants are donated, not extras from the conservatory itself. So, there are three domes: the display dome, the desert dome and the tropical dome. The display dome is home to ever-changing seasonal displays. It gets decorated for the various holidays and in between, with various themes. As of this review, there are several model trains running in the middle of the floor through all aspects of the American landscape. I also spotted some fairies and gargoyles in the trees and shrubs along the outside borders. The plants herein consist of begonias, azaleas, petunias, tradescantias, clematis, cyclamen; just to name a few. The desert dome is just that: home to plants that can live in an arid landscape. You will find the common house plant Sansevieria aka Snake Plant, as well as aloes, euphorbias, jades, baobab trees, prickly pear and barrel cacti. Look carefully because you will see some plants growing in shoes and boots and some plants breaking right through the concrete pathways! The tropical dome is humid, so, be forewarned if you plan on visiting with a fancy hairdo! This is home to most plants sold as houseplants: calatheas, peace lillies, anthuriums, caladiums, bird of paradise, orchids...only these plants are huge! You'll also find cocoa trees, banana trees, the trees that we get neem horticultural oil from, and hallelujah! Palm trees! There is a waterfall that fills a pond with huge Koi fish in it, and a small flock of tropical birds (for which there is a bird feeder) flying around. For a nice respite from the cold and often dreary Wisconsin winters, the Domes are a little reminder of the summer that we all look forward to, and we don't have to travel very far or spend a lot of money to experience it! 18/2015 read more

The Mitchell Park Conservatory (more popularly known as "the Domes") is a set of three domed gardens, each with a different theme: 'tropical', 'desert' and 'show' ('show' is for flowers). The Domes are 85 feet high and look like something out of a science fiction movie. (For nerds: These domes are not geodesic, but rather "conoidal".) The quality of the gardens is as good as any I've visited, and admission was not expensive. The Domes are a photographer's playground, too. I was a bridesmaid in a wedding at the Domes this weekend. The venue is beautiful, the domes were warm compared to the chilly Milwaukee November, and the light coming in was perfect. There was no need for ceremony decor because the dome itself was was gorgeous with flowers, plants, and a gazebo. However, as beautiful as this venue was, I had an awful experience with the staff. The woman working the ticket counter was so rude and wouldn't let the bridal party in until 15 minutes before the event. We asked if we could buy tickets to get in, but she continued to be rude, even to the bride on her wedding day--I understand there are rules and contracts that we need to abide by, but to not allow the bridal party into the bathroom is a bit ridiculous. And there is a way to be stern, but kind, however she was just plain rude. She even overcharged us for the tickets we ended up buying, as if the couple wasn't spending enough on the venue. Additionally, the wedding planner, Roxanne, was awful. She wasn't at the rehearsal, and still hadn't arrived an hour before the wedding because she was giving a tour elsewhere. She took no part in helping the wedding party figure out where they should be, or setting up any of the decor. The truth is, she simply didn't do her job. While the domes are beautiful, the staff is unbelievably rude and hard to work with. I would not recommend this venue to any bride, no matter how good the price may be. read more

My husband was able to nurture his photography hobby and I was able to relax in nearly 80 degrees in the sunshine reading a book and taking in the sweet sounds of a waterfall and birdsong.
