This park is named in honor of two African-American community leaders, Tony Mitchell and Cheatham Moore. Both men were civic activists in Pompano Beach during segregation. They were among a half dozen sharecroppers who eventually were able to buy the land they farmed enabling them to work for themselves. Tony Mitchell helped those in his community get business loans and Cheatham Moore was the first African-American appointed to the City's Housing Authority. Mitchell and Moore were both instrumental in getting the city to create Westside Park in 1951 so that African-Americans in the segregated city would have a place for recreation. The park has now been named the Mitchell Moore Park and Community Center to honor the men's legacy.
