We had a fairly significant job for Owen. Starting from ground up dirt lot and wanted to create something special. We had a large budget. Owen and his designer came over and looked at the property then gave us a quote about a week later. The quote was very hard to read as it had quite a bit of legal jargon. I emailed the designer and I said I am having trouble reading this it looks like it was written by your lawyers. Oh my how these two flipped out. They were on a group email and did not know it. The designer told Owen what we said and Owen responded to him by saying "lawyers, WTF this guy is a dumb ass, I knew they couldn't afford me to begin with." Who's the dumb ass now. We rebuilt our Fountaingrove home after losing it in the 2017 Tubbs fire and needed to fully landscape our front and back yard. Owen and his company, Mitchell Landscapes, were highly recommended by the landscape design company we worked with. We obtained other bids, but ultimately selected Owen because of how personable, professional, and knowledgeable he was. We couldn't have been happier with the end result. The ten-week project included a concrete patio, retaining walls and steps, irrigation, drainage, lighting, fencing, pergola assembly, gas and electrical lines, plants, ground cover (gravel and mulch), and fire table and hot tub installation. Owen's crew was skilled, friendly and hard-working. His foremen Al and Nestor were amazing to work with and did an outstanding job leading the project. Owen was closely involved every step of the way. He provided numerous suggestions that either weren't in the original plan from the landscape design company or were an improvement to the original plan. This was one of the biggest reasons we're glad we worked with Mitchell Landscapes - Owen's combination of strong design and practical sense resulted in a landscape that far surpassed the original plan. We met with Owen Mitchell to discuss having concrete poured in front of our home. He gave a very fair estimate and suggestions regarding drainage issues in our front yard that needed to be taken care of before pouring any pathways. He is clearly knowledgeable and experienced. When his crew worked on the project, they arrived early, were extremely kind and polite people, and were hard workers. The concrete finish turned out to be beautiful and tremendously improved the look of our property. We also will not have standing water in the winter due to his design, which has been an issue on this property in the past. Neighbors are all asking who did the work because it looks so great. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME CALLING ANYONE ELSE! Keep reading to find out why. Ok so here goes my first yelp review ever... bare with me as it might be long since I love Owen and his guys! I'll try to keep it as short as possible. I moved from NJ about 2 years ago and knew no one nor knew anything about the area. Unfortunately, the house and vineyard property we purchased were in less than best conditions. What do I do? I turned to Yelp for help. I called several landscape companies to no avail. They all wanted me to pay $1,500 for a landscape design and we were on a tight budget. The design was not happening. Then Owen came along and right off the bat started brainstorming with me and was just as excited for the potential the property had as I was. He told me not to worry about the professional design and that we would figure out the design together and he would take care of the rest. He has an extensive knowledge of trees, plants, flowers, fences, decks, - pretty much everything regarding landscaping maintenance and design. He's also super low key and flexible. I have no idea how many times I've changed my mind on things and he responds with no problem every time! (sometimes even after the task was done and he had to redo it...) As I mentioned we were on a super tight budget, so what does Owen say? No problem. We'll break it up in stages. We just completed Stage 4 or maybe its 5 at this point and he has consistently been awesome at everything. Top quality work and it looks amazing! Let's get serious for a second. I would not for one moment have had him come back for stages 2, 3, 4, or 5 and I would not have scheduled yet another project for next month IF I DID NOT THINK HE IS THE BEST AND JUST PLAIN AWESOME! Let me also mention that my mother is a control freak and still lives in NJ. Since she is funding the project, she felt the need to get in the middle and has called Owen, without letting me know, several times. He has been awesome with her and has handled the mother/daughter differences wonderfully. He also sends her several pictures throughout the process to ensure she is comfortable with what is and how it is getting done. He even took her to the nursery when she came out to visit and took the time to thoroughly explain everything to her even though I had already done that a million times before. So I'm going to finish with this... I didn't know Owen before I called him to come give me an estimate and some ideas. I now know him really well and he is an honest, hard working and extremely knowledgeable landscape contractor. I was away one of the weeks he was here and I trust him enough to have told him where the spare key to the house was and had him move the car so he could finish the work. I can't beat Cecilia E's banner about not calling anyone else. Owen does amazing work and last year he took out my thirsty lawn and beautifully landscaped the entire front of the property. But I want to add is a compliment to his follow up maintenance work and the quality of his crew. Prior to finding Owen I've tried a few landscape maintenance companies and found that they would do a reasonably good job, but nothing more. We interviewed and received quotations from several landscaping companies before deciding on Mitchell Landscapes. They had no upfront design charge which was a huge positive after some wanted over $2000 just to give us a preliminary design quotation. Owen worked with us on the design of a complete new backyard, which included a formal paver patio, an informal small compacted gravel reading area for my wife, and removing all existing plants and replanting with drought tolerant plants. In addition he replaced a badly rotting wood retaining wall with a concrete block wall plus removed our tired old decaying fence with a new one. Really wanted to get a chance to do business with them seeing as we'd gotten many reviews from friends regarding how pleased they were with their services. But unfortunately, not once but TWICE, we've called and never received any response or call back at all. The first call was last fall of 2015, and didn't receive a callback. I just chalked it up to maybe it was a busy time, so I tried again a couple of weeks ago and this time no call back either. Maybe they are really busy and screen their jobs based on first messages? After 23 years, the original landscaping of our home was in dire need of a complete overhaul. We had the "typical" new construction grade landscaping with lawn and planting beds with non-native plantings. My wife and I researched landscape layout, lighting, and plant options that didn't include lawn and sketched out our ideas. We had the good fortune of meeting Mitchell Landscapes owner, Owen, after frustrating encounters with 3 of his competitors; one couldn't manage the scope of our project, the second couldn't complete our project with our proposed budget (interesting, since Owen completed the project for two-thirds of that proposed budget), and the third was too busy to schedule us in (I hope these competitors continue to enjoy such a brisk business that they can dismiss a $10,000+ residential job, but I digress) Owen came out to our home and spent over 2 hours listening to our plans and looking over our rather amateur drawings. He has an impressive ability to visualize the finished project, and given his abundant botanical knowledge, he quickly reconciled our ideas with what our property would support into a beautiful and coherent project that fit with the house's exterior style. Throughout the project, Owen was consistently available by phone and was on site almost every day. His crew is top notch and the materials and installed equipment (lighting, irrigation, and electrical) are all exceptional. Plants, yard decorations, ground cover, and trees are all sourced locally, and Owen even advised us on Petaluma's Mulch Madness program, which aids residents who are removing lawn. Our project transformed our home, and given Owen's scope of projects in at least 3 counties, it speaks volumes that he was involved in every aspect of our project from start to finish. We have a 1.5 acre property in the Pt Reyes area and have been working with Owen Mitchell for more than ten years. He is the BEST -- personable, professional, reliable and responsive. (E.g., a couple Sundays ago, we had a minor crisis with a leaking valve in our drip system and called Owen at home. He was over within the half hour.) Owen has an extensive knowledge of botany and a fine eye for landscape design. Our property poses significant challenges in terms of climate and water availability, but Mitchell Landscapes has transformed it from a hodgepodge of struggling plants to a garden worthy of Sunset Magazine -- both lovely to look at and surprisingly low in maintenance and water requirements.
