When we made the decision to move to the Houston area, we heard about how great the schools were and set out to find a great one for our daughter. We decided to look at both public and private schools. To us, the public schools were good, but they were absolutely enormous and the class sizes were HUGE. Someone told us the senior class at one of the Woodlands high schools was 1,000+ students - just the senior class!! We decided to keep our options open and decided to tour numerous private schools. In making the decision, we had numerous things to consider and yes, financing a private education was one. After touring various schools, The Woodlands Christian Academy blew the others out of the water. We were impressed by school, the academics, the opportunities and the facilities. However, what impressed us even more were the people - the staff, the teachers and the students. Everyone was genuine, welcoming and gracious. We didn't feel like a number or like we were sending our young daughter to college campus before she got out of elementary school. We certainly didn't feel like a stat on an enrollment sheet. Our daughter instantly said she wanted to attend even before we could finish the tour. We felt the same way. We LOVE the fact that this is a Christian school, but we love even more how they weave it into the day. It's who they are and it's who we are as well. We're SO excited for our daughter to start school! If you are a family who wants their child(ren) to get an outstanding education, have attentive and enthusiastic teachers (at the least every one of them that we met), learn in a Christian environment, have all of the opportunities of any large private or public school and be a part of a caring community/family this is the place. Yes, it's an investment, but I couldn't think of a better one - especially looking to the future and all of the challenges our children will face in the world. She loves school more than anything, to have your child beg to go to school, happy every morning is priceless. Then, were so impressed with their handling of the pandemic in 2020 (we experienced no "covid learning loss"), it was an easy decision to stay on for the primary grades. And we have not been disappointed! We continue to have truly great teachers, that you can actually interact with every day at drop off and pickup and build relationships with them. I highly encourage anyone who is interested to schedule a tour or go to one of the open houses. Not only is it a charming environment, you will be amazed at how much more they manage to cover than just the basics. There is a focus on fine arts and performances, which are so great for confidence building. But they also get into robotics, go on cool field trips, and seem to have more fun events and activities than you might get in public school. The summer camp sessions are great, too! We'll be very sad to move on after 4th grade!

Beware, parents! *slight edit* I was just sent an e mail that this teacher is not at the Woodlands Campus but at Greengate Academy in Spring. I've lost count; this may be my 5th review. SHSU Charter has a way of making poor reviews vanish. My child used to attend SHSU Humble campus and I regret leaving him there as long as I did. My own background is almost 20 years in education as a teacher, trainer, curriculum developer, coach and specialist at both the site and district level. Due to the nature of my positions, I've literally been in 100s of classrooms. Most teachers are good, or at least have potential. It is the rare few that should not even be in the profession. The K/1 teacher at SHSU would fall into this category. First, the teacher was very rude and uncaring most all the year. She constantly ignored everyone and never let us know how our kids were doing. Anytime I tried to have a conversation with her she'd roll her eyes, sigh and basically act like a spoiled teenager. Next, it is NOT TRUE that SHSU charter doesn't do testing. They do MAP testing 3 times a year, weekly reading tests, and unit math tests alongside several science and social studies exams. It is also NOT TRUE that all the teachers are experts with over a decade of experience. While my child really liked the PE and music teachers and I heard positives about some teachers at other sites, the Humble teacher had never worked with a group larger than 8 and was in desperate need of a mentor or possibly a job change. Not once did I get the impression that she liked her job, the students and most certainly not the parents. Possibly she went into teaching thinking it would be easy, and lucky for her; her position was. Working all alone in a class of only 7 far from the main office in Woodlands must have been a dream come true. Nobody was checking in on her so she could do as she pleased, or more specifically, do as little as she pleased. Not working was certainly her motto. She arrived each day 15 minutes before class and left when the kids did. Each day the same 2 girls would get "red cards" for small infractions. As an educational coach I know, if 25% of your class isn't focused the problem isn't the kids, it's the teacher. The teacher became upset/ embarrassed when it was discovered she was playing on her phone rather than working. The kids would sit alone doing piles of worksheets while she sat at her desk much of the day. Due to being found out, she started a "new policy" that no parent was allowed 1 inch in the class without an appointment. I spoke to both the principal and superintendent about this, and they seemed perfectly happy with the idea of parents being cut off from their child's education. They disguised the door policy as being something all the sites were doing in response to gun control, but as I found out from a friend at another site; this policy was only placed at the Humble campus. One day I entered about 6 inches past the doorframe and was treated like gum on the bottom of her shoe. Yelling, screaming, eye-rolling and telling me to get out. She acted like a maniac in front of the class and I realized my child would be better served staying home watching TV than in a class with a lunatic. I pulled my child an hour later and he told me he was so happy and he never wanted to be in a class with a mean, bad teacher again.

When the year first started I'd have given this school 1 star. I was looking at other schools and…read moreeven *seriously* considering homeschooling. I did not and still do not like the principal - she seems very plastic to me and usually sporting an expression like she has no idea what's going on but is doing a good job of faking it. The very first day when we were doing things "wrong" she in a very rude tone asked had we been at parent/teacher night before school started and we said no we were out of town. I didn't feel like there was a problem as I had spoken to my son's teacher before the first day. But what anyone neglected to mention was anything about procedures for dropping and picking children up so when the principal spoke to us using terms as if we had any idea what she was referring to it furthered my dislike of her. I have since learned this is her very first year not only at this school but as a principal period. That explained a lot. She's desperately trying to show off her capability but is going about it with too much effort so she looks scattered in anything she does. Parents are allowed to drop kid off in the morning after signing in at the office which includes them scanning your photo ID and being given a sticker with your ID and where you will be printed upon it. But parents are not even allowed into the building in the afternoon for pick up - not even the Pre K or kindergartners for supposed security reasons. Why it's different for the afternoon than morning is anyone's best guess. They are constantly begging for volunteers and cannot seem to figure out why they have so few when they have such a cold, unwelcoming, unfriendly policy for/with the parents. The very first week my 5 year old in his first year was given homework! This shock and astounded me in a very bad way. I even asked my father for confirmation and he agreed that when I was in school we didn't start getting homework until second grade. It's a very tedious "chore" to make a child that young sit and do a worksheet or two a night. I'm still not thrilled with it but there's not much I can do unless I do want to remove him from the public school system. I had problems with his teacher at first. My child had never been in any kind of school environment and I made this very well known to her. The 2nd or 3rd week of school she sent a note home 3 out of 5 days saying my child didn't do his work and would I talk to him about that! That upset me in about 18 different colours! What did she want *me* to do about a problem she was having with my child during *her* time with him. I was not going to punish him or curtail any activities because at age 5 he would have already dismissed anything said to him by her earlier in the day. A meeting was scheduled for myself, his teacher and the counselor. Then hurricane Ike hit! The school was closed for a week and two days. They opened a Wed almost 2 weeks before HISD did though the vast majority of teachers' and students' homes still had no power or water. I still find this lapse inexcusable! How could staff members properly prepare for a day with no water or power? How could parents properly prepare their children for school without power or water. Oh they said it was perfectly okay to not being the kids if there was no power or water on - it would just be excused absences. But now my child has 3 absences on his record that I do not think should be there at all! After the time off from the hurricane when he did get back to school my child suddenly got right into the swing of things and all the skills I'd told them he already possessed came shining through. A meeting was scheduled for me his teacher and the counselor only for a different reason this time. They asked was I okay having him go over to one of the First grade classes for reading and having him nominated for the gifted and talented program after the winter break was over? No I have no problem with that at all. I have since volunteered for the book fair {I got horribly sick too}. And have a much better relationship with his teacher and most of the staff. I am not sure if I will ever warm up to the principal ever.

The Montessori schools are too far away, but that is the type of independent learning environment our child thrives in. Fortunately, LCA offers an environment that recognizes the individual, celebrates creativity and works collaboratively with families.
