The Nevada Conservatory Theatre at UNLV is an excellent place for those who enjoy live theatre,…read moregreat performances, and a venue away from the Strip and the hubbub there. I have been a season ticket holder for 3 years getting ready for the 4th year in September. Sure there were some plays that weren't as enjoyable as others. But, most have been top notch, showcasing the talent in the fine arts programs at UNLV. The new season brings the plays Fool For Love, Count Dracula, The Fantasticks, Summers of Fear, and Noises Off. In addition, there are three Black Box productions The Hot L Baltimore, Spring's Awakening, and Trojan Women. These will be in the Judy Bayley Theatre. Go see one of these shows and perhaps get hooked. I know, I did!

Despite being a part of UNLV for over ten years, tonight was my first time visiting the UNLV…read morePerforming Arts Center. More specifically the Judy Bayley theatre. I went to see A Christmas Carol starring Armin Shimerman as Ebenezer Scrooge. I know him from Star Trek and Buffy The Vampire Slayer. I am a fan of both shows which is what drew me here tonight. I arrived too early tonight and sat outside for 30 minutes before the doors opened. Once inside, I was greeted by the very friendly and informative staff. They pointed out the bar, the merchandise table and the information table. They even mentioned that there would be a meet and greet after the show. More on that in a moment. I walked around the lobby and sat for a while more before seating began. There were architectural plans for the set on display. Also, character and costume drawings. There was even a section for people to put on and get photographs of. This was all interesting and a great way to feel connected to the production. What piqued my interest the most was the collection of photographs which had nothing to do with the show. But there was a photo of David Hockney, an artist I am a fan of. There was even a photo of Andy Warhol. Cool stuff. I made my way to my seat about 10 or 15 minutes before show time. It was enough time to get familiar with the set and the theatre as a whole. This is a nive small venue. More intimate and accessible than larger places like the Smith Center. I had a great seat in the fourth row dead center. I was practically at stage level. For sure one of the best seats in the house. Though I get the impression, based on size alone, there is not a bad seat to be found. After nearly an hour of on stage action, there was a breif intermission followed by another 45 minutes of play time. It was a great production. Funny. Touching. Intense. A little bit frighening. I loved it. And the standing ovation at the end tells me that everbody else did too. With bows and the curtain call complete, the cast raced their way to the lobby ready to greet adoring fans like me. The cast were all gracious but we all wanted Armin. People were asking for autographs. A group of Trekkers, myself included, wanted a picture. He asked that we wait for the line to die down. We did wait and got our picture. A great way to end a fun evening.

    Anthem

02/07/14 LES MISERABLES Most voices and acting were outstanding--too bad you couldn't hear a lot…read moreof the performances (and I was on the 6th row center!) because of the sound levels and poor quality equipment. That was supposed to be a performing arts center (in Las Vegas--world class city of entertainment) and no curtain and standing mics were left at SAME LEVELS for every performer. It was distracting that they had to keep moving them up and down for their height--or worse, that they didn't and they were singing to the people on the stage only. THAT NEEDS TO BE CORRECTED..it NEVER changed the whole performance...I don't know how the people any further back heard at all. I talked to people in other seat locations at the intermission and they said the same thing. The male chorus in the second half and the innkeeper couple performers were the only ones with good levels because their voices boomed so much to make up for the poor sound attention. The choir in the back might as well have not been there...could hear or understand nothing they said at all. The equipment sound was tinny also...sounded cheap. The orchestra was above average, but horn section missed some significant notes which would have been obvious to even an untrained ear (I'm a musician) and it made me cringe. Because the sound equipment was poor and not loud enough for the vocalists...the orchestra overpowered the vocalists at times...but not too many, amazingly enough. The violins were out of tune at times as well...but mostly, the orchestra was pleasant to listen to. YOU HAVE TOO MUCH TALENT ON THAT STAGE--FIX THE SOUND!!!!!!!!! REALLY disappointed in that. And groups (like chorus), when you come back on stage for a bow, bow it at the same time--looks like a jr. high play otherwise. REALLY enjoyed the voices (what I could hear of them)...and was in tears at their acting at times. I almost didn't go see it because it was at UNLV and I thought it would be at a college level of performance...and the sound WAS...but the vocal and acting talent on that stage was much better than I anticipated--thanks to them for all of their hard work. The fundraiser raffle was a good idea...I could have created a lot more prizes though...like Valentine's baskets--those would have sold tickets like crazy--especially for a fundraiser. People love raffles and the tickets were very reasonably priced. By the way, the bartending staff, the staff at the raffle table and the usher at the left door, and one of the ticket takers were all particularly poised, articulate and friendly--very impressed with that--especially the raffle attendant. Can't say enough about most of the vocal/acting talent that was on that stage--I would have been mesmerized had the sound levels and quality been so poor...fix that and you will sell out like the Super Summer Theatre does. By the way, SST has AMAZING sound...absolutely amazing...why such a difference? Regarding the performers, I thought some of them put their talented touch on the characters and the music much better than Broadway/theatre production artists that have performed Les Mis...BRAVO to them!!
