I was looking to get a haircut and I was driving to the downtown Oceanside area and then I discovered the Mission Square Barbershop. Mission Square Barbershop is located on Mission Avenue, across the street from the high school, within the Walmart shopping center. Admittedly, they may be a little tricky to find, because they are tucked all the way in the corner. Parking may be tricky due to the lack of specific spaces. Although they share a lot with the shopping center, most of the spaces in front are labeled for two hours only. Although, I have never seen any patrol actually for this time restriction. Mission Square Barbershop has been serving the Oceanside community for over 25 years. The owner, Javier, he's very kind and friendly and cares very much for the quality of his performance and the happiness of the customers. As of November 2025, they are running a special where they only charge $15 for haircuts on Monday and Tuesday (from 5 PM to 9 PM). On any other day, customers can enjoy $5 off of their haircut services. I went in to get a simple skin fade on my side, and it was very little wait time. Actually, it was rather empty for the duration of my haircut. Due to their proximity to the military base, many may assume that they specialize in military haircut styles. But in actuality, they're professional, and they also invite children for haircuts as well. Their seating area is large, they have a television for entertainment, and also a snack and juice vending machine. Service was fast and friendly, and I appreciated the attention to detail. With my haircut finished, I left as a happy satisfied customer that will return again. So last Saturday, I took my youngest son to Mission Square Barbershop. This is the shop I use to go to back when I was in the Marines...got to say, NOTHING HAS CHANGED!!! After 18 years, they still have really reasonable prices, do a phenomenal job and a clean facility! Johnny was my son's barber. He was extremely personable and engaging with unbeatable attention to detail. We asked for a modified Crew Cut for my son and he nailed it! Makes me want to take an 17 hour round trip drive every other week for a haircut! Can't get a good Marine High Reg in the Air Force town I live in now. I've gotten my hair cute here a few times, never a long wait and cuts were better than on base. But the last time I went I took my son to get a hair as well they charged me $25 each when the sign out front says $5 off all cuts and the sign inside says $20 military cuts. for some reason they decided to up charge me that day , haven't gone back since. read more

Just got a great HC from Johnny at Mission Square Barber Shop. Good hours, open til 9:00pm, very clean shop, friendly and professional barbers. I used to get weekly cuts on base, never again. It was enjoyable to get a quality cut by a skilled barber who wasn't in a rush to get to the next customer. I hardly do reviews but this one I have to. My 15yr old son came in to this barber shop second time around now. Because the 1st time he went, he was so happy with his hair cut. And my son is never happy with his haircut every time we go get one. But in all the times I went with him to get his haircut, this particular barber he really really likes! I actually started a Yelp account so I could review this place. I've nicknamed this place "the Rusty Clipper". I don't know if the barbers here are uninformed about the fact that you have to oil the clippers once in awhile or if maybe the one who usually cuts my hair mistook me for one of the GIs who invaded Montezuma and slaughtered her family. Seriously the back of my neck feels like a fresh prison yard tattoo right now. Also they never warn you before they use that over powered air compressor on your head so it gets all over my phone. Yes, it's rude to text while you're getting your haircut, but you know what else is rude? Forcing boring conversation on someone who can't flee because they are in the middle if a haircut! I'm a middle-aged man who's been living in O-side for 11 years. I still have the same thick fast-growing hair as I did in high school (praise God!). I've always gone to expensive hair salons, but the two I always went to have been closed for months. My hippie hair was out of control and I couldn't stand it anymore. I found this place; thank goodness it was open. It's small and not fancy - it reminds me of the barbershop my dad would take me to as a kid. Frankly, I didn't expect much but I had to get rid of that mop on my head. After waiting a short while, Mica called me over to her chair. While waiting I watched her give a haircut to another middle-aged man. It looked great so I said, "Give me what you gave that previous gentleman." Mica did a PERFECT job! Afterward she said, "That'll be $15." I replied, "Not enough!" I gave her a $20 bill and told her to keep the change. Even with the tip I paid less than half of what I've been paying for over a decade for a lesser-quality haircut. When I went home my lady-friend said it was the best haircut she's ever seen on me! Have been going here since I was a Corporal (1991) and am now retired and still go there. Great service at a great $$$$. Have always had great conversation with any/all who have cut my hair. For the gentleman who left a comment re: the "boring conversation" and would rather play with his phone while getting his haircut, just reminds me of what is really important to a large part of this generation......... Conversation through texting. Myself, I prefer the old fashioned method, face to face........ I've been getting my haircut here for almost 3 years. I've tried every barbershop on and around Coast Hwy and this is the only one I haven't had any problems with. I've had well over 100 haircuts and sat in every barber's chair there several times and they are all great and consistent. I have never been there longer than 15-20 minutes and that includes heavy traffic times(early afternoon on Sundays). All the barbers are friendly and courteous. I'm going to miss these folks when I leave for a new duty. I recommend this place to all of my Marines and everyone else. Grade A+!!! Semper Fi! read more

One of the worst haircuts I've ever had! I was working in the area and needed a haircut quick and stumbled across this place. There was only one lady working and when I walked in she acted like I interrupted her TV time with her Spanish soap opera. She was extremely rude and gave me one of the worst haircuts I've ever had. On top of it when she was done she didn't even give me a mirror to look at the back ,and when I got home I soon realized why, she must have been blindfolded when she cut my hair! Best of all when she gave me change from my $20 bill, she gave me 2 $5's as if she was forcing me to give her a 5$ tip, my tip to her is to find some customer service and try some quality when cutting hair ....stay away from this place unless you feel like wearing a hat until your next haircut. read more
