Great store, I've seen them help the community a great deal as well! If you want to support a local thrift this one is the best!

Harvest Hope Food Bank

Harvest Hope Food Bank

I have been coming to this place off and on for a few years now. Yes, I'm not rich. I can afford…read moreto go to a fast food place once every month or every other month. However, I was recently thinking of doing honest food reviews. But back to the place at hand, Harvest Hope Food Bank. They used to give you a decent amount of food for the household you have. Used to be more back when you use to have to come in and sit and wait for a buggy. Not saying that I'm not grateful because I am--truly. Sometimes the gas or bus ticket you spend your money on to get there doesn't match the items they give you. It used to be food for the week and now it's like food for a day or two. It's just that you are at the luck of the draw. Sometimes you waste your gas here and you get food that has seen better days. If it is cabbage, I can normally peel off a few leaves and cook the center. However if it's meats, I feel like they should inspect them just a little more, because at least half of the time coming here I had to deal with smelling rotten meat in my car just to get home and have to throw it away. Then all you can do is curse them in your head because you will go there next month too because what other choice do you have. After paying bills, there isn't much left for most people on a monthly income. It is a hassle trying to get snap assistance but you still try to sign up even if you don't qualify. If you haven't figured it out yet I'll let you know. If you try to find another food pantry in the area--they are mainly getting the items from Harvest Hope Food Bank too. So you are still at their claws trying to stay alive. I used to volunteer here briefly and I remember having to bag the chip, water and repackage the strawberries. They take all the bad produce out from the packages that has mold and keep the good ones and repackage them. Bagging certain amount of items like water, soda, chips, snacks and juice into individual bags so they can spread out the food a little more. My only complaint is that they didn't use the first in first out method as much as they should in my opinion. Volunteers basically would be tasked with checking items for them but with volunteers, you aren't paid to care about giving out good or spoiled food--they just have to show up. I give it two stars because I was able to use some items for my family.

Maybe you're new to the area or just haven't had a reason to come in contact with this organization…read moreso let me share this tidbit from their website. "We provide quality food and groceries to hungry individuals across our 30 county service area. Since 1982, we've distributed more than 250 million pounds of food and fed more than 14 million people." So why am I talking about them? Because I recently had the privilege of volunteering at their food bank. "Bank" should honestly be replaced with "warehouse" because that is exactly what it is. They have boxes for food and drinks coming in (by the pallet) and boxes ready to sort then boxes that have been packed up and ready to ship across the region. And this place is systemic. You have a job and they show you how to do that job as well as be available for questions. I have served at and taken groups to a number of food warehouses and soup kitchens throughout my life. This, by far, is one of the best organized ones I have encountered. The instructions will tell you, but let me say it again. Wear comfortable shoes and comfortable clothes. Prepare to sweat and know that you may have to lift up to 20 pounds. Feeding people isn't always easy, but it is always worth it. Find a way to support. *Insider's Tip -Volunteer either at the Food Bank or the Master's Table (a once-a-day meal providing location downtown). But there is a process so check out the website for instructions.
