My work team did a service day and selected Hope Harvest Food Bank as our place to serve our…read morecommunity. I found this group on the website volunteermatch.org. I was contacted within a couple hours of submitting an information request and set up a day and time for my group within a day! Arriving at the location was easy with the directions, signage, and big parking lot. We filled out some simple paperwork and were lead into the back. Our leader gave us a quick history of the food bank and the amount of people they serve, its incredible! Families can come 1x/month. We were lead into the food pantry back where instructions were given about produce packing, pantry item distribution, and building carts of food based on family size. It was very organized and easy to do. We had a great time meeting other volunteers, learning about the food bank, and giving carts of food to those in need. It was sad bringing carts of food out to people and never receiving a "thank you." It makes you wonder what happened to these people that they don't show gratitude to the volunteers of Harvest Hope. I hope the workers get an overflow of blessings and gratitude in other ways.

"We provide quality food and groceries to hungry individuals across our 30 county service area. Since 1982, we've distributed more than 250 million pounds of food and fed more than 14 million people." So why am I talking about them? Because I recently had the privilege of volunteering at their food bank. "Bank" should honestly be replaced with "warehouse" because that is exactly what it is. They have boxes for food and drinks coming in (by the pallet) and boxes ready to sort then boxes that have been packed up and ready to ship across the region. And this place is systemic. You have a job and they show you how to do that job as well as be available for questions. I have served at and taken groups to a number of food warehouses and soup kitchens throughout my life. This, by far, is one of the best organized ones I have encountered. The instructions will tell you, but let me say it again. Wear comfortable shoes and comfortable clothes. Prepare to sweat and know that you may have to lift up to 20 pounds. Feeding people isn't always easy, but it is always worth it. Find a way to support. *Insider's Tip -Volunteer either at the Food Bank or the Master's Table (a once-a-day meal providing location downtown). They have a few different programs including their market, health classes, zumba, and gardening and dig days. I've volunteered with their market twice now and plan to make it a regular part of my month. Bounty and Soul collects produce from groceries in town that would otherwise send them to the landfill, they set the food up as a market, and then people come and get the food to take it home and eat. This is a way to bring people together. They don't consider themselves a food bank but definitely feed a lot of people in our community. The staff and volunteers at Bounty and Soul really rock. They work hard to make a lovely experience for everyone involved.

A very good organization that services Aiken and the entire Central Savannah River Area (CSRA)…read more They operate completely off of donations from area businesses and citizens and supply many of our local food banks and other charities, such as ACTS and the St Vincent Du Paul Society - all to help get food to people who might otherwise go without. They receive food donations from local and regional manufacturers and purchase food and other items directly from area distributors, then make sure that our local charities all get a share of what they can give out. At ACTS, where I volunteer quite a bit, much of the food they get from Golden Harvest goes out to hundreds of families in desperate need of it. And Golden Harvest supplies a lot of the donations that are handed out on the 3rd Saturday of each month at ACTS for what they call 'Senior Saturday', which delivers much needed food to our local senior citizens each month. Last week alone, they provided supplies for over 360 senior citizens in need! Please consider donating to this very worthy charity, as it is the source of food supplies for many of our other local charities who all work together to try to feed the hungry here in Aiken and the greater CSRA. I didn't realize that I had to get a truck for my bed but thought that I could put it my SUV, I had asked to come back tomorrow to get it. A guy started hollering @ me that I needed to get it today, I reported it to the manager he appeared to be nice @ first until I asked for the name of the man that hollered @ me and his name. He was very rude, hollering out that I needed to leave opening the door out into the parking lot in a rage. I hollered back telling the Manager not to hit me. I have never been treated so bad!
