It was unfortunate that the arcade and all the slides were closed in the early evening (when you can finally go outside to avoid the Orlando summer sun baking you alive) and everything aside from one bar was closed. We managed to get a few drinks for the kids and us. Folks were *generally* (see below) well behaved and we brought our pool noodles into the river to avoid the steep floaty fee. We were not expecting as many drunk adults trying to skirt the floaty rental requirement or entitled kids climbing all over the rocks that clearly said "do not climb" but that's how it is sometimes.

I have been a member since they were signing people up from an office trailer. Working out here has…read moreboth good and not so good points and I will touch on those. This is my 46th year working out with gym equipment in 3 different cities. First of all one should remember that this is a wellness center in a health facility (a good one at that) and not "The Iron Zoo" on Baltimore Street. You'll need to get over any disdain for seeing elderly and injured people using the facilities while you're working out. Otherwise repair yourself to the LA Fitness just down the street. That's just the way it is. Yes, some of the equipment gets frayed a bit or in need of repair. Such things are taken care of in a reasonable length of time, indeed much quicker than other facilities in town. I recall a chest fly machine at LA Fitness out of service for 12 weeks, most work orders here are resolved in a week or two. The Key system that's used works well to automate sign ins but, in my opinion, provides little other utility to the clients. For example on leg day, my son and I were doing leg presses with 700 Lbs., taking turns at 5 sets of 8 reps. When we signed out to go home, the kiosk program told us "you did a light workout today". We had to take the elevator to the ground floor, forget the steps. The next day we came in and walked briskly on the treads for 30 minutes after which the same program told us "You have done an intense workout today", so WTF. I have no Idea what it is measuring and neither does any of the staff. The staff is kept quite busy and I've never noticed anyone being rude or dismissive. On the contrary, I noticed that they are always ready to answer questions and provide advice when asked for it. It is more expensive than other "local gyms" and that could be a negative. On the positive side, I have never seen drug deals being transacted in the locker room or parking lot as is common at other, dirt cheap facilities elsewhere in Tampa. My only gripe is about the piped music. Considering the clientele, the rap and hip hop could be cut down a bit. While part owner of a gym in Baltimore, we contracted with a company to add some "canned music" and the advice they gave made good sense. When you are catering to a mixed clientele, choose a music program that is balanced enough so each client thinks the music sucks only 1/2 the time. This facility fails that test.

I'm not sure when the pool was built but in the early 1970s sounds like from what I was told there, making it a full decade newer than I presumed based on the architecture. But what architecture it is! That façade--you just don't get public architecture for mundane things like parks and rec very often anymore. Despite the mid-century modern understatement, it still has something to say and I wish we'd see more of that today. People have commented on the restrooms/locker rooms. Personally, I was not bothered that the men's locker room was showing its age. It still worked fine. What surprised me was the individual shower stalls instead of a gang shower given its date of construction. And I think the whole men's locker room likely is original and without major updates beyond minor fixtures like soap dispensers. For a public facility at this time of construction to have individual stalls would have been considered a bit of luxury. The current state of the mens' locker room is no worse than many pools I've been to for diving and better than the much newer Cecil Aquatic Center in Jacksonville. The dive well: There's a 1m and a 3m board, which is nice. Both are older but in fine shape. The dive well itself is 14ft but tapers off away from the boards to around 6ft. It's safe, but trying to get a dive a good ways out I was concerned by how it looked from the 3m I'd hit bottom but didn't. It's just a visual illusion and I'm used to pools 16ft deep in their dive wells, too. The dive well is located centerline in the pool between swim lanes, which is cool. All the lifeguards and staff I spoke with were awesome and endured my nerdy questions about the history of their facility. Besides open swim, they have a great program seems of water polo, artistic swimming, and other things going on keeping the facility busy. Overall, I highly recommend!
