On the surface, this sober living seemed fine. But later it became clear to me what it was. A house manager that grunts at any reasonable request (meeting attendance, ride to doctor, groceries, etc) and shames you for asking with a lot more issues. I have ADHD that's unmediated due to my recovery and I constantly got accused of "being high". Even when I drug tested and passed whenever requested. This was not okay, as people are supposed to lift each other up. Recovery is hard. It just is. It's a team effort. I was put into a room with literally the loudest snorer I've ever experienced (not his fault) but got yelled at for sleeping in the closet, the couch, and even outside. So naturally my mental went kind of crazy when I was sleep deprived. No one was willing to make room changes. I was assaulted by a client by a hard back book being thrown at my face while asleep. I stood up to confront him, and the bulky dude continuously threw punches in my face and kicked me many times when I was on the ground. I was simply in the room trying to find insulin at 4 in the morning as my blood sugar was off, being as quiet as possible. So a few hours later this is what he did. This is also not the sober livings fault by any means. But they also made didn't even acknowledge me when the management came to kick him out. I had come home late the night before and that same day my non-abusable antidepressant pills were found in my bag, so I could take them in divided doses to lessen side effects. Then I was "asked to leave" literally that day, an hour after the assault. Even when requested, the staff made no attempt to find another sober living that would work for my needs. Then I ended up living in my rental car for several days, it was one of the lowest lows I've experienced in sobriety. I ended up finally finding a great sober living in tarzana with reasonable and loving staff, with handpicked clients. This was an absolute godsend. Here I am, still clean writing to tell the tale. They even seem to have no intention on reimbursing rent money after I had written a rent check with money I barely had just a couple days before. This was after asking gently and respectfully, several times. It's tough to pick a sober living that works, it's a snap decision in some ways. I stayed at Miracles from November 1 through February. I do NOT SUGGEST YOU COME HERE IF YOU HAVE 1 DAY CLEAN. this is definitely an after care place that will help you STAY clean, not GET clean. You are allowed to have your cell phone, your car, and freedom. As long as you come from an inpatient with a minimum of 2 weeks clean and sober. Amna is very kind and wants to sincerely help you. I did relapse there, but that's no reflection of the program or the staff. I simply wasn't ready. The counselors are very knowledgeable, and Wendy made some life changing comments and taught me some permanent life lessons. The therapist Kelly was very kind and REAL...which is hard to find. I genuinely felt safe there. I had a problem with insurance and that is why I had to leave, and most staff members were sad and scared to see me go. I didn't stay clean after I left, but now I am happy to say that I have 10 months. My time at MIA did make a massive impact. The house manager is a man who doesn't always conduct himself professionally, he isn't sensitive to your situation or your feelings, but imagine getting close to people...only to watch them overdose or leave. I'd keep my walls up and stay distant too..and maybe what works for him is to give the impression of being mean and cold. Hurt them before they can hurt you type of thing. The rooms are nice, there are relapses but that is based on who you align yourself with in the house or in the program. Trouble is weeded out quickly. Amna provides outings and movies and fun stuff, as long as the house is acting like a family unit...supporting each other in life and recovery. You do program all day (like 9-5 job hours) until you earn a lighter schedule. And INSURANCE PAYS FOR IT. it is a program and a sober living in one. It is a great business model and I wish I had found this place when I was 20 and towards the beginning of my drug demise. I shaved off one star because it is co-ed and the management could be better. Co-ed can work for some, but for most FEMALES....if you are under 40....go to an all girl place. You don't need the distraction of the opposite sex. I also dealt with advances from a roommate of mine, who touched my legs under a blanket on the couch, and I froze and didn't tell anyone because he had been there a while and had been there numerous times and was friends with staff...so I thought I would be asked to leave if I brought it up. After I turned down his date offer, and never sat next to him during a movie again, he got pissy and angry and talked shit about me to other patients in the house and said VERY PERSONAL AND DAMAGING things about me to staff and others, information that was said in confidence when he was pretending to have my back and be my friend. That was, until he didn't get what he wanted. Regardless... I remember what was said to me the first day I showed up. "They will give you enough rope to hang yourself with"... meaning they cut you slack and give you freedom that you probably shouldn't have...so APPRECIATE IT..BC IF YOU SCREW IT UP, YOURE GOING TO HATE THE OUTCOME AND HOW THE RULES CHANGE FOR YOU...which is why I said you should probably have a minimum of a month before coming here. I'm pretty sure you can bring your pet here too, if it is approved. If you have the opportunity to go here, take full advantage of the gift you have been given. As another review stated... you will be treated shitty if you relapse or are around drugs or alcohol. But that's what you signed up for. If you find lipstick on your husbands collar you don't ask questions...you kick his ass out. Same concept. At that point it's not about allowing the addict to manipulate their way out of their bad behavior...it's about protecting the house and the people that live there who are genuinely trying.
