Pros: This park is a great little neighborhood park. It's in a nice, quiet neighborhood and the…read moreplayground equipment has a lot to offer for different ages. It has swings, 4 slides of varying heights for different ages or courage levels. The play equipment has multiple levels and other interactive elements (like tic tac toe etc.). Below the main play structure there are fun features for smaller children. There are picnic tables right next to the playground, a short walking trail and a big grassy hill for open play. Cons: there is a mirror element and it gets blisteringly hot as the sun hits it (we were there from 9-10am) and my poor toddler touched it in her excitement of seeing her reflection! Ouch! There also isn't really any shade )unless you are playing below the structure), so it's pretty hot. Additional information: although this is a public park managed by HARD, it's right next to a private pool and clubhouse for the Columbia neighborhood that the park is in. There is a parking lot right next to the park, but it's only for people going to the pool and clubhouse (you will need to find street parking). There are large power lines going through this neighborhood and are next to the park. There is a very slight buzzing noise if you listen closely enough, but it quickly and easily gets drowned out by the sound of passing cars on the road next to the park. I would actually give this park a 4.5, but half stars are not an option. All in all, it's a very nice little park!

However, that's one of the things I dig the most about San Francisco. Instead of wasting one single square foot of land, they make it a park. While you probably won't ever see families celebrating birthdays or a group of dudes playing a game of flag football, it's still an area of land that can be enjoyed by anyone in the city at any time. It'd be swell if some of those tax dollars could to go keeping this place nice, though. Perhaps I'll grab a cup of coffee with ol' Gav Dogg and give him a piece of my mind.

Dry Creek parking is perfectly fine but it can get packed. Try to get there before 12:00 to ensure you'll get a parking space. Also, do not leave any valuables in the car (as noted by the signs with this same exact warning). -The trails and preparations. There is a lot to explore here, so you can check some online resources to plan a route for yourself, or explore freely. I highly recommend bringing at least 2 liters of water if you are going on a 1.5 hour or longer excursion, because there are many spots on this trail where there is not a lot of covering. Snacks like trailmix, nuts, fruts, and sturdy breads (bagels) will be perfect for these trails. -Flora, Fauna, and Safety. You'll see magnificent hawks flying above and cows grazing on the fields. Do not disturb the cows. There can also be lots of dog traffic and occasional horseback riders. There is a warning for mountain lions as well as poisonous mushrooms. In short, be careful with young children around, and protect yourselves.

Just a street away from supermarkets, cafes and popular eateries, Northgate Community Park is a common suggestion in between errands, especially if it involves playgrounds. It's also just a few blocks from the highway entrance which makes this place an easy meet up spot for out of towners. Parking is abundant in the private lot but also plenty available along the street. The kids have a great time here due to the open play area and variety of modalities within the play structures. The play structures were recently upgraded and includes swings, slides, climbing walls, ropes, balance beams and steps. The ground is all padded and there are plenty of benches for those looking to have a comfortable vantage point to keep an eye on your little ones. For field activities, they have two large grass fields frequently used as cricket fields with some local pick up games. The perimeter is also very walkable with paved sidewalks for those looking for a route for their four legged furry friends. Basketball courts are also available but pretty limited. For families looking for a spot to hang, they have a nice picnic area with benches and tables, however, it's not shaded so you may want to bring your own covering or find a spot on the grass instead. There aren't that many spots so you may also want to come early to reserve them or go through the city to secure a spot. They had bathrooms before but I believe they were under maintenance when we last visited and they only had the portable potties available. Overall, Northgate Community Park has some of the most unique playground structures and best maintained in the area. Its location is also a highly travelled one for those aiming to couple the day outside with a meal or some productivity. This quiet park is frequented by locals and you're bound to meet some new friends from the neighborhood!

This little patch across from Speckles Lake used to be overgrown. Thanks to the work of volunteers, there are plantings and it can be a little secluded picnic area. Restrooms right across the street on the west end of the lake. The flowers bloom occasionally. Sometimes it's fairly mundane. My one recommendation is that during the wet times of the year the lower areas get pretty swampy. But that is common in a lot of spots around GGP and Lands End. Thanks to Wilhelm for the original review. SYOY Player!

If you've ever taken part in a One Brick gardening project the chances are fairly high that you…read morealready know about or have worked on the maintenance of Rhododendron Island in Golden Gate Park. If you've driven past Spreckels Lake, run along the western end of John F. Kennedy Drive or have completed the entire San Francisco Bay to Breakers course you've probably seen Rhododendron Island without knowing it. Rhododendron Island sits on John F. Kennedy Drive and 36th Avenue sandwiched in between Spreckels Lake and the Golden Gate Park Equestrian Center. As the history of this patch of land goes it had always been a garden filled with a wide array of rhododendron varieties until City budget issues and neglect turned it into a forest of non-native plants, overgrown weeds and litter. Enter volunteer organization One Brick in the summer of 2003 whose volunteers assembled on site on a regular basis to clean up the patch of land, remove the plants that didn't belong and re-introduce different varieties of rhododendrons and azaleas. It took the volunteer group an entire year, but in the summer of 2004 they completed their project transforming this patch of land back to a garden filled with rhododendrons, azaleas and different tree species. Today, Rhodendron Island is one of the signature events for One Brick. There is a project nearly every month, rain or shine, where volunteers come out to help maintain the gardens, pull out new weeds, lay down weed cover, spread mulch, trim or remove unwanted plants. In my five years of volunteering through One Brick I have probably worked on the island over a dozen times and I've done all of the things listed at one time or another, but I did something two weekends ago that I had never done here before. It was a Saturday and rain was forecasted for that morning. About fifteen or so hearty volunteers including myself turned out. The skies were overcast but dry when we gathered. We noticed the drops of water slowly come down plopping onto the surface of Spreckels Lake across the street. The San Francisco Rec and Parks Department gardener told us he wanted us to prepare the land and help him plant some azaleas into the garden. In less than two hours under a steady rain our group of muddy, wet volunteers dug out weeds and unwanted grass patches and replaced them with 90 azalea plants of different varieties and different sizes. Ninety!! In the words of the gardener himself we were a planting machine, and had he not run out of plants we would have kept going as we were all quite enthusiastic about adding new life to the garden. Rhododendron Island is best to visit in late March or early April when many of the plants begin to flower. For me anyway it'll be interesting to see how many of our 90 plants survived. I've posted some photos taken in April, 2009.

It is SO NICE to not be on busy city streets, though sometimes there can be a bit of congestion with other trail users. And the weather is pretty darn nice--I compare it very favorably to the slightly superior "International Ft. Hancock - Las Cruces I-10 Bicycle Bypass" (in the not-quite-a-mile/~1.6 kms high "¡Hidden Gem of the World, Crossroads of North America, anchored by El Paso, Cd. I highly recommend it for a long level route, connecting Stevens Creek Trail/Mountain View with Caribbean Drive/Sunnyvale. I've cycled it in both directions, and actually saw an unmarked dirigible overhead, sailing around Southbay, practicing navigation/maneuvers before landing back in the super-secret Lockheed-Martin/Moffett base/Google complex. ¡So interesting, and definitely has my coveted "iWheel of Approval!"
