Straub Benioff Medical Center - Hawaii Kai Clinic

This was my first visit (and probably my only visit) to the Straub Benioff Medical Center - Hawai'i…read moreKai Clinic because my GYN, whom I've been a patient of for the past 30-plus years, had transferred from Kapi'olani Medical Center on Honolulu's Punahou Street. Admittedly, since moving into the Kaka'ako neighborhood, I've been spoiled by the short 2-mile drives from my home to Kapi'olani Medical Center, where my women's health care physicians are located. In the past, I've never had to travel any further than 8 miles to Kapi'olani Medical Center. However, because I was still recovering from my total knee replacement surgery, which was done in late July, I had to reschedule my annual September exam for my lady-bits to December. In June, when I called the women's health clinic to reschedule the yearly exam, the receptionist notified me that my GYN (Dr. Gary Kimoto) was transferring his practice to the Straub Benioff Medical Center - Hawaii Kai, and that scheduling patient visits past September wasn't available yet. The receptionist recommended that I call again in September to check availability for December. Of course, his office did inform me there were several other physicians within the Kapi'olani Women's Health Clinic who I could select for either an earlier appointment in October or November at the convenient Honolulu medical center, but, since I wasn't in a rush for an appointment and out of respect, I preferred to have Dr. Kimoto provide a referral. Anyway, I got the directions to this Hawai'i Kai Clinic from one of the receptionists, who gave succinct instructions to drive and turn left onto Lunalilo Home Road from Kalaniana'ole Highway, turn into the driveway and parking lot where the Taco Bell is located, and look towards the mountainside of the parking lot for the covered walkway. Fortunately, we had a 30-minute leisurely drive to East O'ahu during mid-morning, didn't encounter heavy traffic, and arrived 20 minutes before the anticipated check-in time. Upon entering the clinic, five receptionists were either handling phone calls or attending to walk-in patients. One of the friendly receptionists greeted me, and I informed her of my appointment time and provided her with my identification and medical insurance cards. She verified that all the information was on file and pointed towards the patient lobby on my left. I waited no longer than 15 minutes when Dr. Kimoto's nurse assistant, Victoria, came out to escort me to an examination room. While following her from the lobby to the exam rooms, I started to feel like I was in a labyrinth and did my best to look for clues that would lead me out. Unlike sitting in a cold examination room at the medical center while having my vitals taken and verifying my medical information, the exam room was comfortable, warm, and cozy. I was so relaxed that even my blood pressure and pulse rate, which are usually elevated due to "white coat syndrome," were at low levels like when I was an avid runner. LOL! If I lived in East O'ahu and needed convenient, compassionate, and quality health care with friendly service, I'd recommend this clinic. However, I don't know whether this clinic is equipped to handle major medical emergencies or procedures.

Called to schedule an appointment for my mom. A woman named Penny was super condescending and rude…read more Anyway, she just went on to say that the first available appointment was in July. I said ok and as she was scheduling, she then said actually September, oh no actually October. Seriously??? The first available appointment is in October??? That's in 7 months!! That is so ridiculous. Who do they think they are?? I scheduled anyway. Then I called Queens medical in Hawaii kai and their first available was next week!! Obviously we are going there and the gentleman helping me was super polite and respectful. Do better Straub.

MinuteClinic is such a useful resource to get immediate health care. I know trying to get a…read moredoctor's appointment can take days, weeks, and sometimes even months, and by that time, it's useless to even go. Making an appointment is very easy. You can do it on the CVS app or the website. Times are usually available, and walk-ins are accepted as well. I managed to make an appointment on the same day. You check in at the kiosk, and just wait your turn. Valenso was the nurse practitioner who was there today. He was very friendly, personable, courteous, and professional. He makes you feel comfortable and at ease. You can come here for almost anything from minor injuries and illnesses to vaccines and injections to skin issues to earwax removal and then some. Overall, MinuteClinic is definitely useful. Super friendly staff. Clean and bright room. Very easy to make appointments for the same and next day.

I'm NOT a hypochondriac but I consider myself proactive about taking care of my health and…read morewell-being. That being said, I don't usually see my PCP unless I'm feeling like "Death is knocking on my door" and I always go in for an annual physical. This past weekend, we were experiencing a lot of rain and humidity which in Hawai'i, often comes with VOG, when the storm system comes from out South. So, when I woke this morning with some allergy symptoms, I decided to contact the CVS Minute Clinic instead of calling my PCP. The online process of contacting a CVS Minute Clinic was quick and easy. -Go to http://www.cvs.com. Select Minute Clinic. -You can look for the nearest site of Minute Clinic that is located in a CVS Pharmacy plus see what the waiting time is. -Make your selection and you will be assigned an appointment and a confirmation code. Your appointment time and code will be sent to your e-mail and phone (text). -Show up at least 5 minutes prior to your appointment to check-in at their dedicated kiosk. Of course, rather than scheduling an appointment, you can walk-in and they'll see you. However, just know that if you walk-in, those who have appointments will be seen before you. Today, I saw Reynard Nievera, ARNP, who was congenial and professional. He was thorough with his line of questioning as I described my symptoms. After taking my vitals, I told him that I was concerned that my symptoms were just due allergy to the VOG or possibly the onset of flu. Reynard took a couple of test samples and luckily it turned out that i was having allergies. He prescribed several medications which I was able to pick up from the CVS Pharmacy around the corner from this office. Also, I agreed to have follow-up calls to make sure the medications are helping to address and relieve my allergies. The Minute Clinic offers several programs that would augment those that your PCP would prescribe. Their business hours and locations are convenient (usually located inside a CVS store), especially if you're unable to get to your PCP on the same day. They even accept many health insurances. Go ahead and check online to see if you might be able schedule an appointment or walk-in to a Minute Clinic near you.

Updating my Yelp review!!…read more I had to go to Kahala Urgent Care a couple weeks ago. There was a 3 hour wait, and the front desk girl told me to come back in 3 hours. I was running a little late, and she called me to see where I was at. When I got there, they took me in right away. Heads up...THEY CLEANED HOUSE!! Now they have one female doctor A. Wilbough and she was AWESOME!! Her nurse is Amber, and she was a sweetheart! Great sense of humor!! Also Princess was great! All around such a great experience!!! Highly recommend!! Thank you Dr. Wilbough and Amber!!

After a lot of red tape (a problem getting a referral from my doctor, who's MIA from his Queens practice - Dr GO.) I finally got to go see my Orthopedic Surgeon today. His diagnosis was "severely sprained ankle possible tiny fractures that didn't show up on the x-ray." I'm in a foot boot and walking with a side cane. Have to ice my foot in a bucket of ice water 1-2 x's a day. Estimated recovery is another six weeks. Return visit at that time as well. Don't just settle for how an urgent care diagnosis you. Dr. Anthony Kim was absolutely awesome. While the procedure itself felt a bit daunting, Dr. Kim made the experience painless and constantly checked in to ensure I was comfortable and pain-free, both during and after the visit. I truly appreciate his attentive care. However, the administrative experience was quite difficult. As a new patient, the registration process relied on an app that did not provide copies of the information I submitted, which felt disorganized. I have also faced significant challenges obtaining a standard American Dental Association (ADA) claims form, which I need to secure insurance reimbursement. Furthermore, the phone system is unreliable; I requested a callback three times while on hold, and I never received a response. While I highly recommend Dr. Kim for his clinical excellence, I hope the center improves its communication and administrative support to better serve patients.
