Mint Cafe catered for a wedding I attended today. The food was very good. Appetizers were excellent. Very tasty and displayed beautifully. I had a salmon dinner with red potatoes and green beans. Location, friendly service, nostalgia and the food are all great reasons to stop in for a bite. I have been here many times, always for lunch. I really like it when it's nice out and you can sit at one of the outside tables overlooking the 400 Block. Never had a bad meal or bad service at the Mint. They have everything from soups and salads, to sandwiches and chopped steak available for lunch. The biggest prize is the desserts however! I'm pretty sure they are all homemade. I love Mint Cafe! Just love the old diner style. It's my go-to spot whenever I'm in downtown. Street parking is never really an issue, prices are very fair, and the portions and menu choices are great. The staff are very friendly and quick to check up on you. Warning, the biscuits and gravy are currently only served every other Friday. They are current closed Saturday for covid. They were only letting on person in per party when trying to set your reservations. Seemed to be taking every precaution they can. Lots of outdoor seating when the weather is nice. The fact that this place has been around since 1888 blows my mind. I had a couple of eggs over easy with some sausage patties and a pancake. Everything was good, the pancake was fluffy and moist, the eggs were cooked properly and the hashbrowns were nice and crispy. Great menu, server was not so nice. I had some special dietary restrictions and I asked her a few questions. I heard her loudly tell the cooks what I asked. When my order arrived, it was wrong. She brought something that I told her I could not eat. When she returned it to the kitchen, she loudly told the kitchen staff that I can't eat it. She may need to have a loud voice to be heard, but her tone of voice wasn't pleasant. I felt like I was such a burden to her. I understand that it's hard work to be a server, but I won't be returning. read more

Stopped in this historic breakfast spot in downtown Wausau across from the town square. The space had that classic diner feel with a couple counters, a few booths and some tables. I had the Mexican omelette with a pancake. The omelette was good but the hash browns were perfection. Crunchy on the outside without being dry or overcooked on the inside. The pancake was also very good. The service wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. If your looking for a good breakfast spot in downtown Wausau check this place out. read more

There were four girls. It took 10 minutes to be asked what I wanted to drink. Of course all the girls were talking the entire time about Netflix shows and one of them didn't do ANY work while I was there. Eventually when I did get asked what I wanted, I ordered, asked to have pie right away, waited 6 minutes before I got the pie even though it was right there in the fridge. Took 45 minutes to get a chicken pot pie. The cooks were definitely working hard, just the waitresses were unbelievably useless to be quite honest. read more

Although we have had an ok experience in the past this time was absolutely terrible. I indicated order for pick up. While there I was informed that the order pick up was through a 3rd party and was charged more. Also, I was charged additionally for one scoop of tuna almost 5.00. What terrible customer service. I don't know that I will be honoring this small business again. Very disappointing. We ordered two chef salads and one order of onion rings and our total was over 30.00. Came here for dinner on a Tuesday night around 7pm. When you walk in you see the register to pay. There was a line, but another staff member came by shortly and allowed me to sit wherever I liked. There is a plethora of cafe fare. Sandwiches and burgers galore! I went with the Tuna Melt and it came with coleslaw. I substituted the side (originally fries... Or) with deep fried cheese curds. Liked my tuna melt. Two different kinds of cheese. Their coleslaw is yummy. The cheese curds were a-okay. The breading was kind of hard and difficult to chew, but the curds themselves were good. They have a ton of hot sauce to choose from, you'll have to ask for it as they refrigerate them. I went with Widow - No Survivors Hot Sauce. Be aware, this stuff is soooo hot!!! A little goes along way! Service was great. Food came out fast and they checked on me to see if I was enjoying everything. read more

I flew in to Wisconsin for a business trip in Jan 2013 and stopped here because it was one of two places in Wausau that had good Yelp reviews. I got here after lunch time (and after a recent snow storm) so there were only about 4 tables occupied. I forgot to look at the specials board(!!) and ended up ordering the gyro for some reason. It was good, and so were the fries, but it was clearly not cut from a rotating spit of meat, it was made from frozen patties. If I am in the area again I would sure give it a second chance and try something more 'home made'. Tip: To get to the bathrooms, go to the back of the restaurants and go down the stairs. read more

Great vintage stop for breakfast while in downtown Wausau. They have your standard fare: bacon, eggs, hash browns, toast, coffee, all in a spot with cool history on the walls and tables. The prices are reasonable. They also had a Benedict special complete with basil, mozz and tomato, sounded creative and cool, but I wasn't up for tomatoes quite yet that day. I found the place on Yelp, and from our room at the Jefferson Street Inn across the street I could see a steady stream of people walking in the back door, so I knew it had to be a winner. read more

This is definitely a Wausau staple/place to take visitors. Been here many times and never had anything bad. The chicken gyros are pretty good, but the best thing on the menu is the pesto burger! Their shakes and pies are also very flavorful and tempting!
