No trip to Baguio is complete without a visit to Mines View! It's seriously entertaining here. Once you've shopped here, you can quickly get the gist of the stuff to buy and it doesn't really change, ever. But even if I've gone countless times, it's just super fun.
You can buy:
- Brooms (called walis in Tagalog)
- Frog coin purse and satchel (literally body of a frog made into a purse, my Titas are scared af of these, but they make funny gifts)
- Barrel man
- Assorted wood products like bowls, utensils, pocket knifes with wooden handles, chessboards, keychains
- Assorted woven products like placemats, coasters, blankets made of fleece, purses
- Tee shirts and souvenirs of all kinds
- Snacks like baked goods and jam
- Succulents
However, I recommend you make the 5-7 minute walk down the road to the Good Shepherd store if you want to buy FRESH jam, instead of the jam from Mines View. It's the same product, but at least if I buy it from Good Shepherd directly I'll know it was freshly made instead of sitting on the shelf.
Note you can haggle or compare prices between the stalls. For example, several stalls were selling the frog coin purse for 180, and gave me a "deal" of 150. Eventually I found a stall that offered me 150 right off the bat, and gave me a "deal" of 130. It's the exact same product and the stalls are right next to each other. So yeah, definitely look around ALL the stalls and inquire about the prices before you buy something. Chances are, there's a cheaper price for the same item just a few stalls away.
You can rent an Igorot outfit and take pictures too, and of course the view is phenomenal!
WEAR COMFY SHOES, because the cobblestone steps are not the smoothest.
This is a must-do if it's your first time in Baguio, even just to wander around instead of buying stuff.
Last note - BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS. I've witnessed people snatch your purse and run for it. Seriously, keep a close eye on your things and bring a bag that's ZIPPED SHUT. read more
