I went to an Open House hosted by Milton over the weekend at 506 Zephyr in Oakland. My husband and I are both African American, interested in real estate in West Oakland, though we have heard these condos are part of the gentrification driving African American families out of West Oakland. Our experience looking at this condo made us feel completely unwelcome and as if the rumors we heard about them are true. When we arrived, the open house was pretty quiet - there were two realtors and two other people chatting about the house. We came in, looked around. Neither realtor greeted us, offered a flyer, asked if we had questions, or even suggested we help ourselves to look around. Milton was talking to a young man who openly stated he would not be able to buy such a condo; he looked at us as we walked upstairs, saw us come back downstairs and still did not speak a word of welcome, and neither did his associate. After spending about 10 minutes looking around we left, never once having been acknowledged by either realtor. I asked my husband if he had noticed this and thought it was as pointed as I had, or was I seeing something where nothing exists. He confirmed that he, too, had never felt so unwelcome in an open house in all the houses we've looked at. Needless to say, I certainly wouldn't hire Milton to be my realtor. read more
