Milo foundation is really the worst experience, we wanted to adopt a puppy as a family for my sons birthday and i started the communication with them before christmas, today i find out both puppies that we were interested in are now given away. The woman in charge did not communicate with me, i think they are really not concerned about the animals and it shows in there reviews that the animals are not taken care of just like the families interested in adopting. There are many other places you can look to find what you need then to deal with these guys who keeps saying we are non profit, absolutely the worst place to deal with. I should be able to give them less than 1 star. read more

I agree with Chester H. and S-D. I had a really bad experience. The volunteers were rude, disinterested, unfriendly, preoccupied, unaccommodating, mean-spirited, and on some sort of power trip. The animals were unattended while the volunteers stood around eating and bossing each other around. They seemed to have no concern for adopting out the animals. They didn't offer any information or try to figure out if you were a good pet owner, other than filling out a form. They should have engaged me in a conversation and asked me questions that would give them a sense of my true ability to take care of an animal. Also, they do not allow adopting only one cat. Their policy is to only adopt out two. That is utterly ridiculous. Consequently, the poor cats are still available for adoption after weeks of being caged. When I contacted the Director, Lyn Tingle - she never responded to my concerns. Instead, the same rude person I dealt with before wrote back and continued her rude rant and never took any responsibility for her completely unprofessional, discourteous behavior. There are so many other more deserving adoption organizations out there that are more organized, compassionate, and dedicated to their mission. I think this nonprofit is more concerned about their own profit. Find another adoption source and another place to donate your money. read more

I have nothing but amazing things to say about Milo Foundation. I adopted a dog from them a couple weeks ago and I am in love. I could not have asked for a better dog than Shasta. The volunteers and employees are kind and you can tell they really love dogs. Also, the services Milo provides are many, she was spayed before her adoption. Thank you for what you do ! read more

Milo replied to questions emailed very quickly. Saw a dog online we liked. Next day went to Milo San Rafael and adopted her. She was healthy, the two young ladies who helped us were very kind and professional and caring towards their animals. Milo had all the paperwork, our new dog was remarkably like her foster parents had described. The naysayers on yelp about Milo must be cranks. I highly recommend this organization and its mission and pets and workers! read more

I found the milo foundation a year ago and my hubby and I adopted our first dog from there. They let us take our time and look around. We finally decided on our dog and wanted more info on him so the woman in charge brought out the computer and told us some vague facts. This dog was also separated from the rest of the dogs because he wasn't getting along with the them but we were never told of the severity. (When they gave us "facts" about him, they said "he was protective on a leash" which DOES NOT mean the same thing as "so aggressive that he drools when he lounges and barks at other dogs, people and children.") After a year, he's gotten better but he'll never fully rehabilitate. We don't mind that the dog we adopted from there had severe issues prior (because it is not the shelter's fault that the dog was aggressive) but what we do mind is that they didn't tell us the exact details. (And I know that they had further details about him because the woman sat with the laptop right in front of me and read on and on about him and suddenly, when the details were getting from bad to worse, she said let's go ahead and skip that.) So yes, like the fools we are, we took the chance and adopted that dog anyway and through hard work he has made progress but I do feel it was the shelter's responsibility to let us know the truth about a dog's behavior. Despite all this, my hubby and I went back for our second dog. (Since our dog had started socializing with smaller dogs, people and children and no longer had issues with him.) (Eventually, I even wrote to them to give them an update, including the description of our journey with the first dog we adopted from Milo, including pictures and such and they didn't really seem to care or apologize or thank us for everything we endured. But hey, I know they are busy so..I forgave them.) We were greeted again with smiles and welcomes for our second visit. We decided on a puppy and nobody had any info on her but we decided to take a chance on her anyway. I felt like a monster when I had to return her two days later because my first (previously aggressive dog), didn't like her. We believe she was part cattle dog, so she was nipping at the other dog when finally she bit his ear entirely and my dog wouldn't stand for it and turned really defensive, I got in between them and broke up the situation before anyone was hurt. So I brought her back for all of their/our safety. They were really understanding on the phone. Luckily, I was fostering her so I actually wasn't charged the $350 they usually charge for puppies, which I thought was very fair. I went in and waited patiently and eventually was met by one of the girls. I thought they would have a brief chat with me to see what happened. They are usually always trying to chat with us when we're looking to adopt. Although this time, they seemed to rush me, (which only made me cry even more, as it was hard giving her up. The new dog was great but it was our first dog that mistook her playfulness for aggressivity). They didn't care at all about what I had to say about the dog I was returning. I understand that they probably have better things to do, but I felt like they could run this place more like an animal shelter where 'they are actually working there to do good for the sake of the animals and the community' rather than like a business looking to make a profit off of vulnerable people and animals. Ill give them two stars for trying and for the fact that they probably work really hard to run that place the best the can though of course, they can't please everyone but I hope they start treating the people that walk in there to give these animals homes equally as well as they treat the animals that they shelter. With that said, I wish them good luck but will not be revisiting this place again. I hope anyone who decides to visit this place has better luck than I did. Just make sure you really get all the facts and make sure whatever questions or concerns you have are well heard, it could save you or your pet the heartache! read more

Milo Foudation is an extraordinary organization. I never believed I'd find my "twice" in a lifetime dog and my Fozzy, who Milo rescued from a high-kill shelter, was waiting at Milo for me. They treat their animal residents with loving care and make sure they go to the best home possible. This is a 5-star "resort" for animals until they find their forever home. Support them any way you can. Linda & Fozzy read more

I drove here 1 afternoon. It took me 10 minutes to get there and 10 minutes flipping U-turns on the street trying to find Milo Foundation. I am nervous when I walk in. I am looking for information and to pet a few dogs. Staff members that work there are awesome. There friendly, and down to earth. I am surprised how many people are in inside ready to adpot a pet. Staff members at Milo Foundation were busy, which worked out perfect for me to pet some dogs and think about making a decision. read more

I got my dog Sandy at the Milo Foundation! I am so happy with their work as well as the kindness to all the animals and customers! They have a great service with letting you walk the dogs, play with them and as well as holding the cats and kittens and playing with them! I definitely reconmend this place to everyone who wants to get a pet or wants to hang out with animals! read more

We have adopted two dogs from Milo Foundation, and both have been wonderful additions to our family. Toula was my best girlfriend for 11 years until she died of cancer in November. I am not yet ready for another dog, but when I am, the first place we'll look will be Milo. Those who criticize the amount of Milo's adoption fees take note: vet bills for a pet with cancer often run into many thousands of dollars. There may be an occasional grumpy volunteer at Milo, but they wouldn't be volunteering to work with animals if they didn't love them. Isn't that what's most important for animals waiting there to find happy homes? When we adopted Mitchell, his foster dad GRILLED us. He insisted upon visiting our home to be certain that the surroundings were right for Mitch and that Mitch and Toula would be good friends. When he emailed me to tell me that we could adopt Mitchell, his opening comment was that "regretfully" he "couldn't find anything wrong with the adoption." We knew that his regret was that approving the adoption meant he would have to give Mitchell up. What Lynne and her volunteers have done and continue to do is a gift few would be willing to give. Adopting a pet is a huge commitment, and I'm so grateful that they take every adoption seriously. read more

The people at Milo foundation do great work. We have adopted three cats. The people who are critical on this site are not taking into account the context - the staff are volunteer or underpaid, overworked and under a lot of stress. They are all doing the best they can on a shoe-string budget. Let's get real here - the animals they save are at kill centers all over California. They work as hard as they can to save them. How about cutting some slack and show some appreciation? I think many of the criticisms made here are also overblown too. I haven't had anything but good experiences. But then again, I don't think of myself as a "customer." Maybe some spoiled people do. read more

If you are looking for a furry companion, please consider adopting from the Milo Foundation. You won't regret it! The dedicated folks at Milo work hard to save thousands of beautiful animals every year. They pulled our beloved Bogart from a kill shelter in the nick of time, and we cannot thank them enough for bringing him into our lives. We were inspired and impressed by the warm, professional staff and well-cared-for animals at the Milo facility in San Rafael. All of our dealings with Milo were delightful - they went out of their way to make sure that our pooch was placed in the right home for him, and we are over the moon in love. Thank you Milo! read more

their adoption through appointment system is really flawed. you apply for a specific dog, told you're approved to meet that dog & to select a time/day available. but they don't reserve that animal for you to meet despite your application being chosen out of however many there are for that dog. so if i schedule an appointment on friday for the following wednesday, the dog you want to meet could be adopted by someone else between then (which, surprise, that's what happened to me) i don't understand why i'm even applying for a specific dog then? make it make sense. believe the reviews that talk about driving all the way there just to be told the dog/cat you signed up to meet has been adopted already read more

I got my child here, and I absolutely love him. The people are easy going, and make the process SO easy. I have turned Whey into the best dog, and couldn't imagine life without him. read more

I appreciate that they are a place where pets can go. but it is not a place to get a pet from unless you know someone that works there or unless you work there. Please don't waste your time if you want to adopt a pet because they do not adopt pets out except to their personal friends, I am going to have them investigated for their behavior, Do not waste your time. read more

Oof... haven't written a review in years... but 3 1/2 years ago we got our dog Jimmy from the Milo foundation. He's the best decision me and my old lady ever made, and thanks to the Milo foundation he was available to meet instead of being a puppy on death row. Because of this foundation we have a member of our family that's more important to us anything - Thank you Milo Foundation. read more

Just a quick update and some more praise for the Milo Foundation. Both of our cats (brothers) came from Milo and we foster often. Milo is a compassionate organization that does an amazing job of finding forever homes for companion animals. It's not perfect, but Milo will do what ever it can to make the right match between adoptor and adoptee. We spend a lot of time with the animals we foster, and I think it benefits everyone. I highly recommend adopting an animal from Milo. Not ready to make a leap? You may also want to consider fostering instead ... that's how our two boys found us! Since then we've opened our home to others from time to time and it's been a great experience for our family. read more

I LOVE THE MILO FOUNDATION!! We adopted our second dog from them and he is the sweetest dog in the world! My dog aside, I love what this organization does and unlike some shelters I've encountered, they are very friendly and welcoming (and not snobby about the fact that you may work full-time or not live in a huge house with a yard!) and I like the message that sends to potential adopters. I check their website from time to time just because it warms my heart to see all the dogs they're saving and the stories behind those dogs. My experience with them was so pleasant, I recommend them to anyone who is thinking about adopting a pup! Keep up the great work! read more

My husband and I have adopted two amazing dogs from Milo Foundation. Our first dog, Petey Bear, came home back in 1997 and lived to the ripe old age of 17. We adopted Daisy Mae in 2001 and she is still with us - and a joy. The staff at Milo Foundation have always been wonderful and helpful - and we plan to adopt another dog from them someday! We are grateful for the service they provide and for the love and compassion they show to the animals they rescue. read more

I can't say enough about how wonderful I think the Milo Foundation is and the people who volunteer for them are. I adopted a dog through them last year and have been so thrilled with my dog, she's the best. The whole process was a good experience. At an adoption event I explained what I was looking for and a little about my lifestyle, the volunteer listened and recommended the perfect dog for us. I loved that once I was approved I could foster my dog for a few weeks to see if she was a good fit in our family, it was the perfect way to do an adoption. I highly recommend Milo to anyone looking for an animal to adopt. read more

Milo is a wonderful organization, and I'm very saddened to hear that the Marin Humane Society is attempting to shut them down. We just adopted three kittens from Milo last month. Lynn, her staff and volunteers were incredibly compassionate and caring - their only concern was to find good homes for these unwanted animals. I hope community can rally to help Milo stay open. read more

We met our amazing dog Clue through Milo - it was a fantastic process and we have kept in touch with them. They help so many dogs and cats - and people too! If you have room in your home and heart, they are a great place from which to to adopt. read more

I LOVE Milo. If you are looking to foster, adopt, volunteer or just play with animals - DO IT HERE! Here are the things I love about Milo: - They made it super easy for me to volunteer and foster a dog. - They pioneered the movement in saving animals from high-kill shelters! I have so much respect for this. - The Staff: I've gotten to know Lynne, John, Rosie and Amanda and they have all been so friendly and accommodating. I appreciate how honest they are about the animals and what I could expect from each dog, if I were to take one home. - No matter how busy they are, someone will address you and get to you when they can. Of course, the animals come first. - They really do the best they can. On the outside, Milo seems like it has it all - but they have limited resources and still stretch beyond their capacity to take care of the animals, especially with medical needs. - Also, the new place is amazing! They now have a dog yard for the dogs to play freely in and also new cat rooms! - The animals are great. I've fostered 2 dogs and volunteered many times and they have such a variety of breeds and personalities. When the time comes, I see myself getting a dog at Milo, hands down. In response to the negative reviews: Milo is doing a tremendous job with their given resources to do the best for the animals. I hope that people understand that issues around an animal's temperament or health may arise after adoption has taken place. Milo evaluates and shares all the information they acquire about a rescue, but that does not guarantee the personality traits of an animal in a new environment. Please be a good foster parent or adoption parent by understanding the nature of what it means to help and care for an animal. THANK YOU MILO for all the amazing efforts and changes you have made to these animals lives. read more

I adopted my puppy from Milo in July of 2010, and couldn't be happier! I was looking for a few months, and appreciate that there is this organization to help out more animals. There are so many animals that need rescuing, I think it's fantastic that groups like this are able to help out. (humane society is great too, but they can't do it alone!) My dog was found at a high kill shelter a ways out, and I certainly never would have found her, if Milo hadn't brought her in. My experience with the paperwork went smoothly. It was certainly busy in the office, but I think it's important to remember that it's running on volunteers that are doing their best to get back to people. I was in and out in a reasonable time! I would certainly adopt another animal from Milo, and would recommend them as well. read more

I just adopted a puppy from Milo Foundation and could not be happier. We had an excellent experience with them. They responded to our application for adoption immediately and the adoption was smooth and fast. Our puppy did have Kennel cough which seems to be common in most of their dogs. However, they gave us the antibiotics and told us to come back if it didn't get any better. Our puppy made a full recovery. Milo has a great mission and rescues a lot of dogs. I would adopt from them again in the future! read more

Milo rescued and then brought my wonderful dog and me together. He was found in a kill shelter in Manteca. I can't imagine the trauma he must have endured. Milo has a thankless task before them. It is a bottomless pit of a problem. They deserve support and a bit of patience and understanding as they genuinely try to help these defenseless animals. They provide a great service to the animals and the people who who are brought together. Thank you Milo, I will continue to financially support your efforts and I hope to work with you again in the future. Keep up the good work. read more

We looked at shelters for a dog to add to our family for a few months. We went to the Milo Foundation and fell in love with a lovely young smooth haired collie. She had a brother and another family was able to take both brother and sister home. Good for them! We went back a few weeks later and were drawn to a beautiful young Cattle Dog mix, mostly white with some tan marks including spotted ears. We adopted her! The staff was so friendly and supportive with advice and information on how to get her to feel safe in her new home. Milo had saved her from destruction just three days before we met her. I am so very glad that Milo is around to save the lives of domestic animals that would otherwise be put down far before thier time. Thank you Milo, when we are ready to add another addition, we shall surly look you up! read more

Our family saw a puppy on Milo's website, and absolutely fell in love. We emailed them expressing interest. They got back to us that day, and we met the dog 2 days later. His foster mom was friendly, and the meeting went well. She called the director and we were able to drive to her house and adopt the dog that day. Saw the puppy on a website, brought it home 3 days later. He's a perfect, mellow boy, obviously well taken care of. The stuff other reviewers said about a lack of organization, judgmental staff, and foster owners who didn't want to give up their pets... that was NOT our experience. read more

I recently adopted 2 kittens from Milo Pt. Richmond. They were 6 and 8 weeks old, in very good health, well socialized, litter box trained, etc. They both had 1st round of shots, dewormed, deflead, ear mites treated, tested for disease exposure and one had been fixed. I adopted the older one and "fostered" the younger one until he was fixed in another couple of weeks. Great experience here! Staff although very busy at times were always pleasant, professional and helpful. I recommend!! read more

For those who think they were treated unfairly, or didn't get the animal they wanted, or think the adoption cost is too high compared to other rescues, please read some of the stories in the Happy Endings tab at milofoundation.org. I volunteer there and know some of the problems with animal rescue, the costs of vet care, and the costs of keeping animals in their Mendocino Sanctuary, sometimes for life, that would otherwise be euthanized by most shelters. A new loving member of your family does not have a price tag, but must be the right animal for you. Volunteers and staff make the decisions as best they can always with the animal's welfare first. FYI: Milo is a Pet Adoption center and not Pet Boarding or Pet Sitting as listed by Yelp. Also, the correct address is 220 S Garrard Blvd, Pt Richmond, CA 94801. read more

In 2007, we adopted Tex from Milo. So glad we did. He's the best dog we've ever had. Milo saved him from certain death in Clovis and we are eternally grateful. Had Tex not been adopted, he would have spent his days at Milo's ranch in Mendocino and if anything happens to us, Tex has a home at Milo. read more

An amazing foundation. Sadly I had to give up our family dog and Milo agreed to take him, and promised us they would find a good foster home for him. They were awesome. I would not pay 500$ to this facility for an adoption fee EVER. I had the worst experience with this place. First they wanted me to adopt a dog that was aggressive with males when I love with a man, but somehow it was being pushed on me anyways even though it wasn't a good fit and they knew it. THEN, I found the perfect dog that had just arrived the day before and I put in my application for her fter I walked her for an hour and fell in love IMMEDIATELY. BUT, the main lady there was hung up on the dog food I fed my last dog who lived to be 16 years old... I guess Costco brand is not good enough? I literally called and emailed and left voicemails more than 12 times.... the one time I talked to someone she said someone would be picked within two hours? This was three weeks ago... Now today I get an email stating she had been adopted by her foster family? Like good for them and her but WHY wasn't I given this option and why was this not communicated with me? WORST EXPERIENCE EVER! Will go to another shelter thanks! read more

My main problem is with the woman I was told was in charge. She never returned my calls or texts. I schedule and request multiple visits with the dog my daughter and I met but they never happened. I had to hound her for responses. And was ultimately denied because i have a cat and she was worried how they first interacted. Which by the way was my cat was scared to see a new dog in our house. He didnt even scratch or bite the dog during our visiting. The dog was younger and excited. My cat is use to an older calm dog as our famiky dog recently passed away and why im in the market for a new family pet. I pleaded my case that it woukd take time but they woukd get along. She basically didnt want to hear my side and made her decision gow she felt. She also tried to recommend dogs that didnt fit my application. I got the feeling she thinks she knows a lot about animals. But her ideas and talk of then tells me otherwise. I'm deciding to go anywhere but here. read more

We had been looking for a puppy for some time and had submitted an application and been pre-approved. We were over the moon when we got the call that we had been picked to meet the puppy. I asked how many people would get to meet the puppies and was told that there were 5 puppies and 5 families, so everyone would get one. We went and spent an hour with the foster mom and puppies. When we left she said she was going to advocate that we get the puppy we wanted. We were elated and drove home discussing names. Three hours later she called and said she had some concerns. Ok, what? "Well... I'm concerned you're not.... active enough." As an overweight woman I'm well aware of what that oh so subtle code meant. After multiple calls to the Milo Foundation someone finally admitted that all the puppies had been adopted. What about the comment that only the amount of people that puppies were available for? Someone "made a mistake" and invited another family. No one would have called me to clarify that we were being discriminated against based on our appearance. My 13 year old daughter was taught exactly how important what she looks like really is. This may be an OK place to adopt if you are not one of the 42% of Americans who are obese. If you are I would save yourself and your family from this very painful, ugly, discrimination and look for a rescue from somewhere else. read more

I'm really shocked at how many bad reviews Milo has, and how similar they are. I've been there several times and liked the feel of the place and people. However, Saturday I went there and asked about a specific dog, and was treated almost with suspicion. The place seemed chaotic and quite disorganized, and I felt actively discouraged from even getting to see the dog. Their folks need a good manager to deal with people coming in, and the woman who finally got to me needs some help with her people skills. I've given this group what I consider a lot of money in donations, but given that the management has not responded to any of the bad reviews, I will certainly reconsider. read more
