Hubby & I were out at my dads new property for my birthday checking out where he has purchased more land & a new house. Leaving, we were needing a birthday party quick hangover cure to the rescue! Lol Stopping for gas next door to this cute little drive-in, we notice it was completely PACKED! We were famished, so we decided to check it out. Inside, the place is super cute, what a find! So I started taking pics. This man, I presume "Larry the owner" comes to our table & says to me, "do you want to take pics inside the kitchen too?" LOL I said, "no, but I love your place it's very cute & I love the way you vaulted the ceilings, my hubby & I are in the process of refurbishing a carriage house & want to vault the ceilings just like this. How did you do it?" So he goes on to tell us all about his adorable Little small town cafe/ drive-in & you can see the pride that he has for this beautiful little place in his eyes. Just beaming. We order burgers & fries & it was quite a wait for them, but once we got them OMG! Hubby & I were cramming them in our pie holes so fast, "Larry" kept coming over asking us "how is it guys" & we were like grunting & mmmm-mmm-MMMM, unhua-mmm shaking our heads yes, making all kinds of noises bc we were just stuffing it in the kissers like wild ravaged walk of shame peasants. Sorry not sorry about that! :)... However, we apologize we couldn't talk further "Mr. Larry?" bc we really loved your burger as you could see we ate them like it was our last meal on earth! :)... I didn't get to ask "Larry?" about the burger bc we ate them so fast, but I think they grind their own meat here. Hubby & I grind all our own meat fresh so I can tell when the burger is ground fresh. Our burgers were a good size, seasoned to perfection, hand pattied & the SS fries were our favorite. I also LOVED the coleslaw & the ice tea!!! :)' They were so busy, people were waiting in a line out the door so we hurried & left. But we noticed that there were a LOT of people there having these giant ICE CREAM cones with what appeared on top as Oreo cookie sprinkles?! We LOVE your burger "Larry?" At first glance, it looked more like a mix of an art studio and a meeting house. On one side of the main room is the dining area complete with eclectic furniture. On the other side is a long counter table cluttered (intentionally) with paper artwork, paint bottles, boxes, a wall section of workshop tools that includes a power drill, among many other things. Surrounding the dining area are smaller tables filled with trinkets for sale akin to a souvenir shop. Food was already prepared buffet style when we arrived. The owner AC Reeves welcomed us as we took our seats. While I do not care for the cuisine, it was reasonably good and filling. I enjoyed the chicken nuggets and the dish (which I'm somewhat sure contained fish) that had bell peppers and onions. (Sadly, the dishes were not labeled so I'm going by my not-so-reliable memory.) Beverage was provided at the counter near the doorway leading to the restrooms, and manned by a waiting staff. Service was stellar. In addition to at least two helpings of food, I had a can of Coke and a bottled water. In contrast to the appearance of mess and antiquity of the dining area, the bathrooms are pristine. (Okay, the men's; I did not verify if the women's is similar.) But stalls are limited to one standing urinal and one toilet seat. I had to wait at least 5 minutes for my near 80-year-old roommate to finish his business before using the latter. Very rare does a restaurant stays true to its principles through thick and thin. In 5 & Dime, the cuisine is a means to an end, that end being social capital. As AC points out on the chalkboard, it is the sharing of experience and social fellowship (via food) in an environment of mutual respect that is the "product". I had a brief one-on-one chat with AC. She mentioned being in the Tar Heel State; I mentioned that my son will be majoring in fine arts this fall. While 5 & Dime isn't my kind of place, it succeeds in its stated objective. For those that are into this kind of dining experience, this place is for you.

He also said something about tiny crawfish. I guess he was expecting them to be lobster-sized. Lol I eat there regularly. The food, service and management are all excellent. I don't think they serve it any more, but the best thing on the menu used to be the crawfish sampler platter--crawfish etouffe, fried crawfish tails, crawfish pie, crawfish pistolette, and French fries. Most people have to take home part of their dinner, because they serve such large portions. If you leave there hungry, it's your own fault! They do a good job, and they have made renovations to the place as well.
