History
Established in 1911.
Founded in 1911 by 29 prominent citizens of Washington County, the mission of the Washington County Historical Society has always been to preserve the places, artifacts, documents and stories that make up the local culture and history. Over the years, the organization has been instrumental in the preservation and rehabilitation of important historical sites, including: Fort Frederick, the South Mountain Washington Monument, Dunker Church and Burnside Bridge at the Antietam Battlefield, the Jonathan Hager House Museum. Today, the historical society still supports the preservation of historic sites, but has expanded its activities into the operation of two museums and a research library, designing exhibits and programs which educate and entertain visitors, working with the public school system to give students first-hand experience of local culture, and many other activities which support the preservation of local history.
