This shiny silver bridge looks like it belongs in a Back To The Future II style image of the millennium, complete with flying cars and hoverboards. When the year 2000 did actually arrive, everyone resigned themselves to the fact such exciting inventions and dramatic events, such as planes falling out of the sky, were still a while off yet.
However, Glasgow City Council held on to the space age notion with the completion of this bridge in 2002 as part of the Glasgow Science Centre development. It allowed pedestrians to cross the river from the Armadillo to Clyde Tower and Science Centre at the other side.
One very cool feature of this bridge is that it breaks in two and rises in the middle whenever a boat passes underneath. I am always a bit scared of these bridges; an image of me casually walking across only to find myself dangling over the water clinging on for dear life, seems to be ingrained in my head.
But the image moves on to me attempting a running jump for the other side, like in that Blues Brothers movie. I'm pretty sure I could make it. read more
