I know this review will sound a little harsh, but…read more... I am a paying member of the YMCA. I don't get an income discount, I don't get a work discount, I just wanted a nice gym membership and so the Y was the first place I thought of. I know they are also a charitable organization and bless them for that...however at the downtown YMCA they allow people from a rehab across the street to shower and use the facilities. They do the same for several homeless shelters, etc. No one on the YMCA staff checks on these people. Once they are in the building, they're not just showering and leaving, they hanging out, sleeping in corners, and so on. I have been trying to add some weight training to my workout and a man was asleep on a free weight bench. He was not wearing workout clothes or anything you would wear to the gym to work out it. Eventually a YMCA worker came and woke him up and asked him to leave after I approached the front desk about this. I guess my problem here is that I was unaware that I was walking around in a building with drug addicts and homeless people. My daughter's hoodie was stolen off a machine. No big deal I guess. Frankly when you pay $50/month for a gym membership you just assume the people around you are all paying for the same service. That being said, I wouldn't be on guard for someone who pays for a membership to steal my daughter's sweatshirt. That's my own mistake for 'assuming', but until I asked about the man sleeping on the weight bench I had no idea that charities gave out shower passes to drug addicts and homeless people that they would be using the same locker rooms without ANY SUPERVISION or tracking from YMCA staff. Again I take no issues with their charity work and applaud them for doing it, I just think the average person who pays a fair amount of cash for a gym membership to a place with nice facilities does not automatically guard their belongings or themselves in the same manner you would as if you were walking down the street in an unsavory neighborhood. Right now it was only my daughter's sweatshirt. It could have been her phone, or her wallet. Yes they have free lock boxes at the front desk, but kids have come in with compact bolt cutters and cut her lock right off in the locker room. So even when you lock your stuff it could get stolen. The police don't care unless it's something like $50 or more. Appearances can be deceiving, and I would probably have signed up for a membership anyway, but a heads up about the company they keep would have been nice.

The facility has three floors that are easily accessible by elevator or by stairs. They also offer a variety of classes from Body Pump to Zumba. I then moved the gym to do more cardio and ended my workout in the Rick Burr room where I did some ab work. I enjoyed my visit there and would recommend this facility for those visiting the downtown Erie area.

I love the power yoga classes offered at the studio, but they also offer basics power yoga, kids yoga, prenatal yoga, and other specialized classes to best fit your needs. They have mats available to rent for $1 or you can bring your own. They have a room with changing areas, shelves to place your personal belongings, and plenty of parking out front in the Colony Plaza. As someone who enjoys working out, but isn't fully immersed in all things yoga, I appreciate that Yoga Erie provides a welcoming, safe, and overall positive environment for those of varying skill levels. I've been able to take classes with many different instructors, whose classes are unique in their own ways featuring different combinations of yoga poses. Nonetheless, all classes remain challenging and are sure to make you sweat (no shame in taking water breaks, here!!). Having my mom, sister, or a friend join me at Yoga Erie makes taking a class all the better, too! Definitely give Yoga Erie a try if you are ever in the area (your first class is free!) and be sure to take advantage of their specials. At the start of this past new year, they ran a 2025 special where they offered 5 classes for $20.25. This would make for a great gift or personal purchase to see if you'd be interested in buying some of their other packages like an unlimited membership.

I have been procrastinating about getting back on my mat and decided that I should maximize my…read morevisits to Erie by trying a new yoga studio. I made a reservation for a 4:30 pm Power Yoga class on a Monday. Mary was my instructor and she was at front desk upon arrival. First time era get a free class, mat and towel rental. Once I had all my gear she gave me a tour of the space 2 changing areas, restrooms and a "locker room". The studio is a large rectangular space with wooden floors, painted wall designs, an area for blocks and props and ceiling mounted infrared heaters. I took a space in the middle of the room that wasn't directly in front of a heater. I thought the class was extremely challenging ... mostly because I am out of practice and I forgot what the heat feels like. Mary circulated the room giving cues throughout and I felt accomplished and relaxed at the end. I will say I like when instructors flow with you and I thought the beginning was a bit too fast, it's important to start slower so your body can get warmed up and you don't compromise form. I'm looking forward to returning for another class in the future.

It truly is a wellness center complete with physicians, physical therapy, saunas, pools (as in the plural form of pool), a yoga studio, an aerobics studio, a pilates studio, cardio equipment, weights, resistance training, a simulated golf room, a meditation room (fo' realz), and the most amazing fitness classes designed by the Les Mills program. Using some insider information, the front desk staff is required to greet and acknowledge anyone that walks in the front door regardless of what they're doing. They're also required to greet anyone they may see walking in the wellness center. Though it's a requirement of their job, I have to admit that it's rather nice when you're a member at the center. It creates a warm and welcoming environment for sure. The floors throughout the front lobby, hallways, and doctors' offices are made of granite and are always shiny and clean. The granite even extends into the bathroom sinks! The locker rooms are impeccably clean with lockers that don't require padlocks, and the bathrooms are cleaner than any other public bathroom/shower I've seen. Each sink top has a hairdryer along with lotion and soap. Each of the showers also have shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in each stall. Shower towels and work out towels are provided throughout the gym. There is a cafe that's open from breakfast until about 6 PM that provides smoothies, cookies, coffee, biscotti, sandwiches (hot and cold), yogurt, and salads. I'm actually a medical student at the medical school associated with the wellness center, so my time in Erie will be coming to an end in a few short weeks, and I'm absolutely distraught over having to leave this gym. There's really nothing like it. Please do something wonderful for yourself and try this place out! Your first visit is free!

The Goulash Chronicles: A Descent into Aquatic Purgatory I…read morehave returned from the brink, though a piece of my soul remains trapped in the filter of the YMCA shallow end. For those tracking my descent into madness, prepare yourselves for a tale of liquid treachery and the most disinterested deity to ever wear a polyester whistle. The Treacherous Shallows My journey began following a grueling session with my interpretive hopscotch league. I was seeking the baptismal clarity of the pool; instead, I found a lukewarm grave. I stepped into the shallow end--a depth so pathetic it barely dampened my shins--and promptly began to perish. It was a feat of anatomical impossibility. I was drowning in what was essentially a glorified puddle, my dignity dissolving faster than a cheap bouillon cube. Every desperate splash was a testament to my own physical incompetence, a silent scream for a God who had clearly clocked out for lunch. The Human Tsunami Enter Abdula: a child of such monumental, gravitational presence that his mere entry into the water caused a localized sea-level rise. Abdula did not swim; he displaced. His rolls functioned as organic flotation devices that defied both the laws of physics and the Geneva Conventions. He was a whirling dervish of "fat-chud energy," flailing with a smugness that suggested he knew his sheer mass would eventually beach me like a tragic, hopscotching whale. The Goulash God And then, there was The Sentinel. A towering, golden-haired colossus of questionable Eastern European origin--a man who radiated the "musty gym locker" chic of a disgraced Olympic shot-putter. Perched atop his throne like a bored Roman emperor, he managed a feat of multitasking that would make Gordon Ramsay weep. In one hand: a steaming bowl of industrial-grade goulash. In the other: a cracked iPhone, where he was aggressively day-trading crypto with the frantic energy of a man who had already lost his house. As Abdula's tidal waves threatened to consume my very existence, our "hero" didn't reach for a buoy. He reached for a spoon. He sat there, stirring his stew with a rhythmic, soul-crushing indifference. He watched me gasp for air in four inches of water, locked eyes with my fading soul, whispered a solemn "Walahi," and returned to his failing portfolio. The scent of paprika and despair hung heavy in the humid air. The Verdict Eventually, the universe grew bored of mocking me, and I crawled onto the tiles, shivering and defeated. Abdula remained, a glorious, floating island of chaos. The lifeguard didn't offer a towel; he merely grunted at a particularly nasty dip in the Ethereum markets and took another bite of his meat-slurry. Ambiance: Damp basement meets high-stakes gambling den. Safety: Non-existent, unless you can be rescued by a flying potato. The Lifeguard: A professional gatekeeper of death who prioritizes stew over stewardship. Final Rating: * 5 Stars for the existential crisis. 0 Stars for the rescue. Infinity Stars for Abdula's majestic, physics-defying girth. Beware the Shallows. Beware the Goulash. Walahi.
