The 1903 original library building is blended seamlessly with the newer structure. As you enter, there are many wide open spaces to sit and read throughout the library. For the children, there is a large children section which has a lot of fun animal characters. We were visiting in the winter so the outdoor area was closed but it did look very nice. The parking lot is good but I would imagine that it would always be great to have more parking. Finally, the book self-check-out system is definitely state of the art and there is an electronic drop of book drop off at the main entrance. The architect, Michael Pagano, and the entire library team did an amazing job with this new town community hub. Don't miss the "Let your quest be for knowledge" inscription on the stained glass in the 2nd Floor staircase of the original 1903 Library building.

This is so helpful because my husband constantly forgets when he gets emails saying his requests are in. The library is old and elegant, and cozy. It was one of the last libraries to transition over from a full-service library where the librarian pulls all the books for the patrons to the standard library like you see anywhere else (the 1990s I think?) and you can tell because they shelves are the old locking kind. They are definitely not up to date with the latest and greatest when it comes to their printing capabilities, but their new interim librarian, Rebecca, is working on it.

There has been quite a few building upgrades which were much needed. They were also done without affecting the beautiful stone exterior and the old windows of the building. Inside is cozy and unique. There are three floors. You walk in the main entrance to the adult and sections on both sides. There is a balcony above where many more books are located. If you go downstairs, there is a great children's section. The staff is all very sweet and accommodating. They are all there to help and are great with recommendations or with locating material. They do many activities and meetings in this building. They also have passes available for local museums and parks. There was a major technology upgrade as well. Gone are the days of the massive card catalog with the lengthy drawers of cards stating the location and reference information of the books. There are now several laptops you can borrow for the sitting area or look up and get your book checked out all via computer programs. It's a great spot to bring a coffee in and browse or read for hours. Love this little place. Ps- it also doesn't get crazy crowded and there doesn't seem to be many unwanted visitors that pass through here.

The building is actually called The Damon Memorial Building and until 1926 housed both the high school and the library. The high school received it's own building and the Gale Library took over the entire building. The library is made of lovely granite from local quarries with brown sandstone trim and the roof is black and red slate from the state of Maine. The library was designed by the famous Boston architect Stephen Earle in the Romanesque Revival Style and even includes a clock tower. The money for the library was donated by Sam and Susan Damon Gale and was opened in 1888. This was the great era of library building and the inside is as impressive as the outside. A stunning and wonderful building, libraries like this will never be built again.

One day he decided he wanted to do something good with some of his money so he came up with the idea of building a library in the small town of Douglas, Ma. And to make it special he decided the library was to honor his mother and father, Simon and Phoebe Fairfield. So in 1903 the pleasant brick building was opened for business. James didn't attend the opening, he was probably out somewhere making more money, but the library immediately became very popular in town. Today the Simon Fairfield Library is still very popular. A very attractive little library that has the charm and feel of the original yet with computers and free wifi and other modern amenities. If you look carefully you can see all kinds of cool staircases and fireplaces from a time past but also posters and art from today. Pretty cool how some libraries manage to juxtapose the old with the new. Everyone in the library was very friendly and helpful and there are lots of programs and events and even a Lego Club. Nice to have reminders of the past combined with the conveniences of the present.

This is how bad I fail at life:…read more I took out a book in September 2011. Started reading it. Lost interest. And then lost the book somewhere in the endless expanse of stuff in my apartment. I thought about it, with a guilty conscience, for a few months. I found the book, again, in November, made a mental note to return it. Promptly lost the book again. Decided I needed to get my act together. In December, I purchased a copy of the book on Amazon with the intention of replacing the library copy I lost. Went to the library and realized not only have I lost a book, but my library card is also nowhere to be found. So with my tail between my legs, I went to the Simon Fairfield Library and begged forgiveness. In other words, I begged for a new library card and asked them if I could replace the book. They said yes, and the librarian was even kind enough to spare me the fines I had accrued over... five months. I walked out fine free, with a new library card. Oh, the grace of redemption. Yesterday, I found the book I lost.

But it was becoming increasing obvious that as the town grew so did the need for a larger library. So a lovely new library was opened in the year 2010. It's named after Pearl Crawford, a brilliant woman in the town that could apparently do just about everything. Pearl passed away in 1971 but now her memory lives on in a library that she would have loved. The library is very modern and spacious and gives the appearance of one long room. But in reality there are separate rooms off to the side of the main area. The library has a really cool internet café room with pithy quotes on the walls and a booth that looks more at home in a real café. It also has a wonderful children's room with all kinds of cool things to read, play and look at. There was even a visit from Queen Elsa and Princess Anna while we were there. A modern, friendly and very, very useful and convenient library. It's easy to see this library serving the town for at least the next century or two.

Having grown-up in Shrewsbury, and now after many years of living outside of this immediate area, I've happily returned to town to care for the many needs of my now elderly parents. This spring will mark the 3rd year I've been back. Sadly my mom passed away on January 9th, 2018 at the age of 91. She lived in Shrewsbury her entire life and over the years she gave of herself by tirelessly volunteering for numerous town and church organizations/boards. My dad, having done the same, will be turning 93 this fall. That having been said, I wish to extend my hand in gratitude to the many people who work and volunteer for our local Council on Aging. I've only very recently turned to the council for advice on the care of my dad. The wonderful people of the council have become a refreshing and profoundly helpful resource for my family. I am eternally grateful to the council for their willingness to assist! From the heart, I say THANK YOU to the team and please keep up the terrific work because with all of you in my corner, I'm able to accomplish my primary objective, which is to provide for their increasing needs, thus allowing them to remain comfortably and safely at home for the entirety of their lives! Twice they printed the Shrewsbury bus schedule, and twice the info is wrong...Maybe someone should actually try taking the bus...and I once saw the bus driver tell an elderly woman at City Hall that she could not take the bus to her doctors appointments at Shrewsbury Center (a business you can't get to) because twice a day (yeah, only twice) they don't go all the way through Shrewsbury, they stop at Fairlawn. He told her to walk the rest of the way or wait in the cold for another hour and he can take here there. I emailed the Town Manager (who is supposed to be on the WRTA board) and he never responded. Also it used to run all the way to Ward Hill and someone complained and they changed it....Now that person has moved and it stays that way..Also several people have to walk a few miles to get to it's new location (the Elderly center) where they don't even take buses , they have shuttles and rides. Thanks Shrewsbury!
