Went there last night with my husband for our Valentine's Day dinner. Their V'Day set dinner menu was priced at $85/person. The lobster bisque was a bit too salty, but still yummy with chunks of lobster and leeks. My husband's salmon tartar came on sushi rice and some vegetables. He said the entire dish was a bit too sour. Everything else was perfect! A very elegant and quiet place for special occasion. This is definitely not a place for those with children or looking for modern flair. The dining room was filled with mostly the over 50 crowd (also primarily whites). Seriously felt like they were dressed for a business meetings. It wasn't until later on that night when a few younger couples arrived. The entire staff was very nice. I even got a call during the day to confirm my reservation for that night. Everyone was very attentive. Did not feel like we were rushed at all. After news of the recent Mill Room"s renovation and new chef/menu, the results were disappointing. Good service, responsive management, but the food was very bad. Overcooked fish, stale, canned sauces, an inedible filet. For an otherwise lovely resort with excellent amenities and sports facilities, there's no reason why the food should not be at least equal to the surroundings. Odd detail: it was 90 degrees outside and they had a fire going in the fireplace. Major disconnect here. read more

Wow. Well I see there are many good reviews here for dinner, and maybe their dinner is different- something more hands on that might have flavor and taste. As far as brunch? Hah. I won't be returning here when we're visiting Charlottesville. It cannot be described as anything other than bland, uninspired, and poorly executed. We tried many different items in the hopes that something may be good. Guess what was good? The fruit, the lox, and anything else the kitchen obviously hadn't been involved in. I'm not often offended when I receive a bill, but to know I paid $83 for 2 brunches and a Bloody Mary that I could have had better at a Denny's? It was offensive. I'm quite happy to spend more on a meal, we spent more on every other meal we had here actually, but this one made me unhappy due to the terrible quality of the food. The biscuits and gravy? Bland. The potatoes? Bland. The eggs Benedict? Bland and strangely chemical tasting. The tilapia with lobster? Bland. My favorite part? When my boyfriend tried a piece of the chicken he grabbed and started laughing. "What?" "You know how I made chicken that one time and it was dry and terrible but I ate it anyway because I didn't have anything else? This tastes like that." I tried it and he was correct. Dry and bland. Several girlfriends and I came to Boars Head for St. Paddy's Day Brunch. Only 1 of us was a C'ville native, so the other 4 had no idea where to go or park for The Old Mill Room. After driving around, we finally figured out it was in the older part of the resort. The brunch had a lot of really tasty options- salad, veggies, soups (soo good), entrees (mainly meat based so I didn't partake), and amazing desserts. For $20, it was worth it. Adding on a glass of champagne made it def more expensive, which was really the only *bad sigh* factor. We left stuffed and happy. read more

We went for dinner on Christmas night so menu was a fixed price so not necessarily typical of other nights (although we did eat there this summer and was disappointed as well). The room was quiet and comfortable and the service was quite attentive. But the food was disappointing, dishes were lackluster, not hot enough (several of us had to return our main courses for this reason), dessert was uninspired... I live in Charlottesville and am a member of the Boars Head Sports Club so would really like to like the new Mill Room but unfortunately while it has been renovated, the food is mediocre and somewhat overpriced. Pretty disappointed, my husband and I stayed at the resort for a little weekend getaway, we had dinner on Friday night and Breakfast/brunch Sunday before check out. Dinner was good, we had the lobster tail appetizer which was tasty (although it was small for two to split), I had the halibut, my husband had the crab cakes. Both were good. Sunday morning was a whole other thing... our waiter walked up turned his back to me and greeted my husband warmly, took his drink order and completely ignored me, before he walked away he finally asked "did you want something too?". He left for about 20 minutes and then returned to ask for our food order. We did the buffet which included an omelet. The buffet was pretty small, the biscuits were tasty but everything else was pretty cold. After we ate our meal we waited about 30 minutes while no one refreshed our coffee or came by to check on our table. My husband finally asked a waitress if we could get the check, she seemed confused and asked another waiter for help. The two of them argued right behind our table that we weren't THEIR table and asked us to please be more patient for our waiter to return. 10 minutes later he returned without the check, I asked politely for the check and handed him my card, when he returned he handed it me and said just said "bye!" as he walked off. For a resort restaurant I would have expected better. There are way better places to eat in Cville, skip this one. read more

I had been to the Boar's Head Inn for a cocktail in the Old Mill Room on a previous trip and fell in love with the atmosphere of the place. There is this old wold charm to it. The lakes, the grounds, and the little golf carts driving around add an easy charm. The nice bartender who gave me bread to feed the ducks made my day. So I came back and this time to stay. It was nice but I was left wanting a bit more. The bedroom was spacious and the bed was comfortable - but I was hoping for a more spa worthy bathroom situation. I'd brought lots of nice lovelies for the bath and was saddened to find not a soaking tub, but just a regular tub. Okay, no big deal - the beautiful view from the balcony made up for it. It was too hot to do much else, so we headed to the pool. I suggest going to the smaller pool and not the pool affiliated with the sports club (unless you have kiddies). If you want to relax, stay away from the sports club and the splashing kids. The biggest disappointment was the lack of towels at the pool the second day. We called a few times and the lifeguard kept saying he was going to get some for us but it took hours. It's my understanding that the truck that delivers their pool towels was late that day but I felt they should have gotten some backups down there for their guests who were left high and....wet. I expected more but still a solid place to stay in a delightful town. read more

Without any prompting we were seated directly in front of the fireplace.... Burning dried oak logs. Enjoyed immensely the Wine paring menu offered for the month of March 2015... We had some fantastic local Monticello Virginian wines. The food was absolutely delicious. The service was great. I always return to the Old Mill Room and have never been disappointed. Well, my sister and I were REALLY looking forward to dinner at the Mill Room. We arrived at our reserved time of 5:00 - server quickly took our drink orders and returned in a timely manner for our food order. And that's when things went downhil. We were the first diners to arrive in the room and, I think, the last to receive our entrees. The appetizer came out fairly quickly, followed (slowly) by a pretty bad, overdressed, Caesar salad. TWO HOURS LATER I asked our server to check on our entree as my sister had to drive back to Northern Virginia. We were told it would be another five minutes, but a half hour later the entrees finally arrived. My shrimp and grits were lukewarm and a cold in the middle blistered tomato garnished the plate. My sister ordered the special but didn't get to enjoy it as she had to get on the road to her home. Bottom line, because it took two and a half hours from arrival to entree service, we asked for "to go" boxes and decided to skip dessert (or it would have been 10:00 pm by the time we got out of there). The food was OK (but subpar for the price) and the menu very limited. Those who ordered burgers were served promptly (or so I observed) so the kitchen needs to get their timing fine tuned - I do NOT lay blame on the server. Romantic setting and the food was perfect. My husband had the mountain trout - and coming from someone that fishes in Colorado for fresh trout - it was unbelievable. The crispy salmon was impeccable. This was my second time visiting the mill room since the new renovations. Prior to the renovations my family and I used to come for brunch on special occasions. The other day we decided to give dinner a try. The menu seemed very appealing and the overall ambiance from the new renovations gave the dining room a very homey and comfy space to eat. Unfortunately our dinner was disappointing. I ordered the blue cheese chicken dish and the other person at our table ordered a sandwich. The ingredients seemed very fresh. The pasta tasted homemade and the chicken was perfectly cooked and juicy. However, both the sandwich and the pasta dish were extremely bland; so much so that we both had to season the dishes ourselves. For the price they charge per dish you would think that it would arrive well seasoned. In addition, the service was mediocre at best. Not terrible service, but not great either. If the food hadn't been cooked well with fresh ingredients then I would have left a much worse review. On a side note, the brunch is definitely not as great as I remember it being in the past. It's still good, but not as good as it used to be. Overall, not terrible but for the price they charge there are definitely much better alternatives in Charlottesville for a meal. read more

I've been going here for years- it WAS the best place to eat and a family tradition every Christmas dinner. It was magical and I could always count on the quality of food and excellent customer service. Sunday brunch was epic- now the buffet is paltry and lacks that WOW factor. It must be under new management that is not dialed in to their staff or the needs of their customers - the staff seemed miserable so the culture has truly changed. My experience POST renovation was awful. My burger was over cooked with zero taste. My 5yr old niece complained that the milk tasted funny and actually threw up! Lastly, the wait staff could not explain the menu and lacked cohesity in how they teamed up to serve the table. Epic fail- hope they get their act together. read more

We were long-time fans and frequent diners at The Bistro at the Boar's Head; a clubby room with a diverse menu -- from club sandwiches and caesar salads, to salmon and steak entrees. Following an 18 month renovation of the Bistro and the large, formal Mill Room, the facelift is complete. But, there's no Bistro! The Mill Room has been beautifully repurposed into a cozy bar area with booths and high tables. Adjoining the bar area is the Porch Room, which is light and bright, with views of the lake and beautiful grounds. The outdoor deck remains and has been spruced up. Our concerns are that the nighttime menu is uniformly pricey and not very diverse. We'll no longer be having drinks and a club sandwich on the deck on a summer evening. In fact, we no longer see anyone dining on the deck at night. Who wants to spend $50-75 a person for drinks and a casual dinner at the Boar's Head. This may work with convention attendees with expense accounts and folks staying at the Boar's Head for weddings and other special events, but it's become a "Special Events" restaurant for us locals who patronized the Boar's Head for dinner on a regular basis year-round. There is a "Smash Burger" on the appetizer menu, but all the other appetizers are more exotic and pricey. The formal menu is rather pretentious. Our entrees (we were there with another couple; both were celebrating anniversaries) were tasty but, again, we view it as a destination 2-3 times a year rather than 2-3 times a month, as it was before. read more

The Old Mill Inn is a great dining experience with all the charms of Colonial America. The dining area has antique style furnishings with the centerpiece being a grand old fireplace. Brunch runs $40.00 a plate, but had a great selection of egg dishes, breads, meats, and deserts. My favorites were the sausage patties, Cauliflower au gratin, Jefferson Brioche Toast, and the Trifle. First, let me say the service here is impeccable. If you're looking for a high class experience this is the place. When I left to use the restroom and came back, the host at the podium followed me back to the table so he could pull out my chair and place my napkin back on my lap. That's great attention to detail! I love that. For dinner I had the tempura avocado and it was very rich and kind of strange. I didn't really care for it. But it was served on a nice bed of shredded kale in dressing that I did enjoy. For main course we both ordered the Ahi tuna and it was delightful! Perfectly cooked (dark pink on one side, light pink on the other) with baby bok choy and delicious soba noodles on the side. The mango sauce that came with it didn't really compliment the tuna so I avoided it. Overall, the experience was very good. Yes it is pricey, but you get good quality food, country club glam atmosphere, and top-notch service. Definitely worth it for a special occasion. read more

This is the first review I have ever written. Just had lunch with a group and we all had the buffet. The best food was the salad dressing. None of the food was hot. It was lukewarm at best. The pork and fish were also dry. There was one warm vegtable dish but it was also dry. Desserts were not worth eating. The roll would not be editable except for the butter I added. Did not try the soup. For years I have enjoyed the Mill Room buffet but this year it was overall dry, had few choices, and disappointing. Service was good. read more

When we entered the Old Mill Room we received a nice greeting from the staff and were promptly seated. The wait staff did there best at service although at times it showed that they lacked training. They brought us out a nice basket of fresh bread and fresh butter and an amuse bouche of passionfruit/peach cold soup, which was sweet and tasty. We ordered the scallop wrapped in prosciutto as one first plate. When the waitress served it we smell a fishy smell! We gave it a chance and took a bite. It was horrible. We sent it back. The second first plate was a quail dish. It was not good either. We ate it but it tasted like it was warmed over in the microwave. The presentation was not good either. I think it cost 16 dollars. Now we are worried how are entrees will taste. For 25 dollars, we had the asparagus and morel risotto. It was okay. Not bad but not something I would ever order again. The other dish was halibut encrusted with shrimp on pickled leeks for 29. It was edible but not something we would get again either. The shrimp were awful. The dish was very salty. Based on our experience so far, we opted not to get dessert. Dinner with tip about 100 dollars. Satisfaction level= Not happy or satisfied we left disappointed and wishing we didn't eat at the Old Mill Room. read more

This is a review of the restaurant The Old Mill Room at Boar's Head Inn, and not of the inn itself. We went to the Boar's Head for C-ville's restaurant week, and that may have been our first mistake. I'm happy for the opportunity to try a new restaurant, but the $25 prix fixe price for 3 courses might have been too low for any quality restaurant to meet. On the drive over, we were speculating which technique Boar's Head would turn to: serving teeny-tiny portions of high quality food, or large portions of crap. Unfortunately for us, they chose the latter. I was in a group, so we were able to order one of everything from the restaurant week menu. For our appetizers, the peanut soup tasted like someone had blended a jar of Jif with sugar water (so disappointing given Rev Soup's excellent and cheap Senegalese Peanut Soup), and the sweet potato lasagna came in a pool of sauce reminiscent of Campbell's Cream o'Mushroom. The entrees were even worse: the flank steak roulade was so overcooked it was like eating a kitchen towel, and the pork chop was so comically tough that, looking around the room, you could see everything sawing away at their chops with their elbows up in the air. Dessert was a lemongrass creme brulee that tasted like Lemon Jello and had no crust at all, and a hazelnut chocolate mousse in which the nuts had started to go rancid (like a jar of Nutella that's past its due). Even given the constraints of restaurant week's pricing, I think Boar's Head made some decisions that were very poor, that basically assumed their customers were idiots who wanted to consume large quantities of junk. I've eaten better meals at Applebee's for less. It was like cafeteria food in a posh setting. I feel bad for the waitstaff (who were very polite and attentive), having to constantly ask how our meal was going and not wanting to hear the answer. It's not their fault the kitchen failed so badly. If you're going to spend your $$$$, I'd save it for Fleurie or Clifton Inn. read more

Inaccurate menu online, senior discount only exists sometimes even though it says always, much of the available food was bland, and the price was through the roof. I came here on a busy day (Valentine's Day) and we ordered the pre-fixed menu which included 3 courses for about $50/person. The quality of the food was below average for these prices and the service was SLOW. It took no joke 45 minutes for each course to come out (which I don't understand because there was a limited selection) and about 30 minutes for the check to come out after we asked twice. I saw another table leaving because it took so long. Save your time and money and try somewhere else! read more

Pros: Great service, wonderful tempranillo wine, nice setting, and delicious soups. (peanut was good and lobster bisque was amazing). Cons: Everything else! The watermelon carpaccio tasted like a not-in-season slice of watermelon topped with mayonnaisey chicken salad. The entrees were bland and boring. The red snapper was cooked with no seasoning, laid on a bed of white rice and cilantro, and surrounded with an orange sauce that tasted like Chinese sweet and sour. My husband's ahi tuna was served with a thick breading that he described as something that could have come from McDonalds! Did not stay for dessert. All in all, would have been fine for a fast food restaurant, but very disappointing for a $150 meal. read more

Those were the best martinis but now they serve half-size martinis in a short "woke" glass like all the hipster joints elsewhere in C'vlle. At least they do not serve martinis in a champagne glass like Prime 109 and Common House!The biggest disappointment was the blue jean attire by all the wait people. Came here for brunch on a Sunday. I recommend you have a reservation or you'll have to wait for 20~ minutes. A very nice setting and the view from the larger dining room in the back looks out at the pond/lake. Omelet & carving station, eggs benedict, fish, oysters at the salad table, standard eggs/bacon/toast, grits & oatmeal, a variety of desserts & fresh fruit. Non-alcoholic beverages come with the buffet price. The wait staff was great and very nice to a table of asian girls who were out of place. Had brunch here, and unfortunately, the food does not live up to the setting. There were items well executed (blue crab bites), but too many, not so much. We started with basics, cocktail shrimp... the shrimp was overcooked, and rubbery; the buffet was decent but again, too many items overcooked (possibly sitting too long?): roast beef was tough, the fish overbaked to being almost 'hard.' But plenty of choices on the brunch buffet, and overall experience was good. read more

I drove down to Charlottesville from the DC area on a Friday to take my son, who is a law student at UVA, out to lunch at the Boars Head Inn. We had the buffet. After about 30 minutes, I had to excuse myself from the table and rushed to the Inn's restroom, where I spent the next hour vomiting. I then escaped to my son's apartment and unexpectedly had to spend the next 24 hours on his couch drinking Pedialyte and Gatorade. It ruined what should have been a nice experience with my son, and because I was unable to return to the DC area, I also had to cancel a medical procedure. It was obviously food poising. I reported the incident to the Inn on their website's comments section, which asked for my phone number and email address. I never heard from them: no apology; nothing. I can't comment on the restaurant at the Inn under normal conditions, but based on this one experience, I would give it a negative rating if I could. read more

Had the most relaxing, delicious dinner! I thought it might be very stuffy and completely traditional but the menu had good variety and was somewhat creative. The atmosphere was comfortable and quIet. Our waitress was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. I had asparagus parmesan risotto-was great- actually kind of light for risotto. Afterwards we had a couple drinks outside and was a very relaxed feel-not too stuffy. read more
