I really wanted to like this hotel. The room itself was very nice, and we specifically chose this…read moreproperty because it presented itself as a boutique hotel experience. Unfortunately, what happened during our stay--and the way it was handled afterward--completely changed my opinion. Our room had a significant fruit fly problem. This wasn't one or two flies that we happened to notice. They were throughout the room, landing around our belongings and water bottles, and when we woke up in the morning there were so many that they were around our faces. I took pictures because I couldn't believe the number of them in a hotel room. We had been traveling through Michigan for the week and stayed at multiple other properties without experiencing anything remotely similar. We also travel to Northern Michigan regularly, so when management explained that there is a short period each year when fruit flies can be particularly prevalent in the area, I understood the explanation--but it didn't explain why this was the only hotel room where we encountered them at this level. I brought the issue to management's attention and gave the hotel an opportunity to make it right. I was initially offered a 15% refund. I explained why I didn't believe that was an appropriate resolution, and management took my concerns back to the owners for further review. I was ultimately told that the owners had decided the 15% refund would remain their final resolution and that nothing additional would be offered. I declined the 15%. I've worked in hospitality for 25 years, and what disappoints me most isn't simply that the room had a problem. Problems happen in hotels, restaurants, and every other hospitality business. What defines a hospitality organization is how it responds when something goes wrong. For a property positioning itself as a boutique hotel, I expected considerably more care in both the condition of the room and the response afterward. Being awakened with fruit flies around us is not an experience I consider acceptable, regardless of the season. I'll include my photos with this review so people can see what we experienced and make their own judgment. I don't enjoy leaving reviews like this, and I gave the property an opportunity to address the situation privately before posting publicly. Unfortunately, after the owners determined that 15% was their final resolution, I felt it was important to share an honest account of our experience. The room had a lot of potential. The hospitality surrounding the problem did not.

We were originally going to spend most of our time in Traverse City, so we were disappointed to be 30 minutes out from the city. However, we had such an amazing time exploring Northport, Sutton's Bay, Old Fishtown, and other small cities off of the M-22 loop that we never even ventured to Traverse City! Jane and Jack are the owners of the B&B and are so nice. They did an amazing job making us feel welcomed, but still giving us our space to enjoy one another. The house is a historic building in Northport and the décor is consistent with that. Even though it is an older home, it is well taken care of and updated to accommodate guests. There is a very cool old fireplace out back and they allow guests to sit at the fire in the evening. Jane always had a serving tray filled with ingredients for smores waiting for us. She even had bug spray for us. They also have a mini fridge filled with water and pop for guest to enjoy. Jane is a phenomenal cook and we enjoyed the breakfast she prepared both mornings. She presents it beautifully and gives you plenty. Overall, we were just so pleased with our stay and loved meeting Jane and Jack. I would highly recommend this Bed and Breakfast!

We've been waiting for Riverside Inn to really find its stride under the new ownership (which "new"…read moreis really several years old now!), and last night felt like it may finally be getting there. Riverside was a favorite of ours when Kate owned it, and over the past few years we've kept coming back hoping to see the new owners develop a more consistent kitchen and, importantly, a menu with an identity of its own rather than one that sometimes felt like it was trying to emulate the best restaurants around the area. Last night delivered. The food was consistently good across the table--the chicken was cooked and seasoned to perfection, the pasta was excellent, and the accompaniments felt thoughtful and well executed. And please, whatever you do, never get rid of the whipped mashed potatoes. Those have consistently been something Riverside does very well. The focaccia with corn was fabulous and butter with honey is way better than previous iterations of butter with olives??? Nobody wants that. Service got off to a very delayed start, but once our server found a rhythm, things got back on track and the rest of the evening flowed much better. It feels like Riverside is beginning to settle into what it wants to be rather than chasing something they're not, and that's encouraging to see. We've been waiting for that. Last night was the most confident and consistent the restaurant has felt in a while, and we're hopeful they keep heading in this direction.

I ordered beef tenderloin which was cooked perfectly to specifications. Maybe a little more mashed potatoes and demi glacé would have kicked it up a notch. Others ordered salmon, trout, steak frites and bolognese. Enjoyed a couple shared yummy desserts and coffee. Note on bill for larger party there is an added 23% gratuity which I was informed of when making reservation. I would recommend for a pleasant dining experience.

This cozy hotel, nestled near Petosky and surrounded by many wineries, is the most fabulous boutique hotel. The outdoor trees are beautifully decorated and it makes you feel like you're in a hallmark movie. As we drove up, and parked we were met by an employee who knew our names and took our bags to our room. Felt like I was in Dubai getting VIP status service again. Our check-in was swift, and we were given a tour of the downstairs which had an amazing bar with a roaring fire, and free snacks and waters. It also had a small gym, and a game room containing a billiards table. Once we finally got to the room we were so shocked. The room was massive and absolutely breath taking. The bed was extremely comfortable, and the sheets were super soft. The highlight was the outdoor patio. We got a room on the first floor. The patio came enclosed with heaters so that you can go out and look out at the lake and not freeze. During Christmas they put a Christmas tree on each patio. Very romantic and festive. Service is, by far, the number one thing about this place. The hotels beauty is obvious, but it only goes so far if the service isn't there. We loved every minute of our stay. The bartender in the evening was the best. We sat there for hours and just chatted. He was very personable, and fun to talk to. We also wanted to use the jacuzzi, so the front desk employee went, and opened it up for us even though it was freezing outside. They also let us stay 20 minutes past the hours of operation without question. There were many more things we didn't do like snow shoeing on the lake, but they offer many things for kids, families, or outdoor enthusiasts. Overall, this was probably one of the best vacations we have had. From the service to Amenities they checked every box. If you are looking for romance, or even a family get away then this place is a must. We also took advantage of the wineries in the area. They are still open in the winter. I wish I would of snapped more photos for all to see, but I was wanted to live in the moment and not technology. This place has won many awards as a top wine hotel in the country. Just make sure you call way in advance for reservations. They book up extremely early. We booked a year in advance.

It's also located in a scenic spot -- beautiful Omena Bay is right down the hill. The lodge itself is comprised of several historic buildings. The dining room and sitting rooms are on the first floor; guests can enjoy a crackling wood fire in the fireplace, play the piano or just sit and read in the front rooms. Another house on property also has guest rooms, we believe, while a third house is divided into suites. There's also a game/activity building with its own fireplace and kitchenette.
