Aspen Grove Park is tucked away just off of Cool Springs Boulevard between business/office space…read moreand retail plazas. The plaza it sits directly behind houses McAlisters, Moe's, Burger Up, PF Changs and more. The main entrance is located on Aspen Grove even though the address shows Cool Springs Boulevard. When you pull in, you pull into a small parking lot, a brick building that houses the restrooms to the left, start of the trails to the right and then a nice brick pavilion that houses several picnic and patio tables, a fireplace/grill and a little free library station. Just beyond the pavilion is a grassy area and playground. The park has one main trail with four off shoots creating 5 paved trails each ranging from .10/mile to .60 mile. If you make a few laps you can make a nice distance out of it. Most of the trails end and start in the park area, however one ends/starts near Core Life eatery. All the paths are paved and 90% of the trails are covered in foliage. The trails also feature a few cool bridges that cross the creek, and there are a few grill/picnic areas along the trails as well. I have driven by this park for years now, and honestly am surprised at the space and trails. I am impressed with the simple layout, covered trails, cute creek and the calm that it brings, even in the middle of retail and office suites!

I made my way onto the Greenway via the Kohl's trailhead, which is an entrance found at the back end of the Kohl's department store parking lot. It's not glamorous, but gets the job done. At this entry point you are directed under, around and onto the Bob Sheehan Memorial Bridge. As you walk this path, you are next to the Stones River, as well as Lebanon Pike. Once you get beyond the immediate area, you finally hit the trails. The trails are a collection of pathways from wide roads between the river and neighborhoods, to slimmer walkways in the woods. There is not one identity for the trails here, and they seem kind of pathed together. But even so, they get the job done for those who enjoy walking, jogging or biking. Additionally, Ravenwood Park can be found just a half mile or so down the trail from the Kohl's trailhead. While I didn't not explore this park, it too has an interesting history. There is a lot of construction happening along large stretches of the trails, mostly that of new neighborhoods. This takes away from the nature aspect of the greenway, but I get it... Overall, the Stones River Greenway Trails get the job done. I prefer other stretches of the greenway such as those near Two Rivers, but when in the area or just needing a change of scenery, this portion of the trail is a decent option.

Nothing but sweet nature sounds like birds and leaves in the wind. Pups are allowed on some trails and ours really enjoyed it! There is a visitor center with restrooms and maps, then even had some live acoustic guitar music being played by a sweet gentleman! Some parts of the trail were closed due to flooding, but we still got a great workout in! Excited to return.

We stumbled upon the park while driving the Trace and decided to stop for a quick stroll and stretch. We were pleasantly surprised with the immaculate trails (perfect t for walking or running), and the lush greenery that surrounded it. The trails are marked so it's easy to navigate, and you're never too far from the car. As we were walking a light drizzle began and the sound of the wind and the rain falling on the trees was magical. Timberland Park is a place that takes you away from the city and into a world of nature and calm. If we lived here I would frequent the park and run the trails. They also have swings and benches along the way for a rest or a lovely place to sit down and journal or ponder life. The park is very well kept and the ranger does a good job of making sure people know when it's closing time. They have porter potties available if necessary as well. I wish we had more time to explore because I am sure there are wonders throughout the park that I have missed, but maybe I'll discover them next time, Highly recommend Timberland Park for exercise, recreation, personal reflection time, or just a pretty picture.

Established 1965, with 650 acres, Peeler Park has paved walking/jogging paths, hiking trails, horse…read moretrails, a model airplane field, and a boat launch. The paths cumulate in over 16 miles, so absolutely note the map. The land was originally the farmland of E. N. Peeler and his family, and was purchased in 1963 by the parks board for $750 an acre. Originally the plan was to really develop the land and create a golf course, but a neighbor private golf course complained about the competition. Instead, it remained wild land. In 1969, the next door Sun Valley Swim Club was purchased and the land added to the existing land, bringing it to its total size that it is at today. They used the pool leftover from the swim club for about fifteen years, finally destroying it in the late 1980s. The land was contemplated for use for a landfill, as one was needed and Metro owned the land anyways, in the early 1990s. This idea was snuffed by annoyed locals in the area. After the landfill idea was dismissed, the boat launch was added for $250K. In the late 1990s, early 2000s, some Nashvillians tried to get the land declared a wildlife sanctuary, an effort that failed. When that failed, a different sect of Nashvillians tried again to get a golf course on the land again- another effort that failed. In 2009, another section of adjacent land- Taylor Farm- was purchased and added to the park land. One of my favorite parts of this park, however, is the fact that the parking lot is stuffed with feral cats, that are apparently fed by the locals and are harmless. Watching them from a distance (although allergic to cats), I found myself charmed.

The park itself is only about thirty acres, but it's the gateway to the 80+ acres of the Whites Creek Greenway. Joseph Brown Mullins was a self made, successful African American land developer in the area in the 1920s and 1920s. The greenway itself borders a fine line between "lush and undeveloped" and "messy and unmaintained", so it really will depend on if you're a glass half-full, or glass half-empty kind of person. There are two loops, and one one-way path across the way to Hartman Park, and it isn't marked or anything, so check a map before you come and have a plan.

I don't know where the greenway ends and the park begins. I didn't see any distinctive signage to…read moredelineate the two. That lead to a confusing visit. Greenways are too large to try to take on the way that you would a park. I think I would have enjoyed Mullins Park more had I known where I was going and what I was doing. As it was, I sort of felt dropped in to the middle of a greenway with a lot of overgrown vegetation. Truth be told, the overgrowth reminded me of Children of the Corn and it sort of creeped me out. Despite there being a paved path that goes the length of the greenway, the isolation of the park, the lack of people taking advantage of the park (although it backs up to a neighborhood) and the 'wrong turn' vibes I got while exploring on my own, I didn't want to spend much more than I had to and I got the heck out of dodge. Again, I think a contained, defined park system would make more sense. From what I could gather -- and what I experienced -- the park is the lip of the greenway and it's just too large to take on in an afternoon. You should know where you're going and what you're doing which takes away some of the point of checking out a park. All the above said, I wouldn't label this as a destination park. I would imagine that locals have a better sense of what's going on and where to go than I did. A couple of closing thoughts: 1.) I enjoyed seeing a large amount of butterflies doing their thing. Seeing them made me realize I never see (or, pay attention to) butterflies out and about. 2.) I don't spend a lot of time in Bordeaux and I should explore it more. It's deceptively close to Downtown but feels a world away. It offers a suburban feel with city access. I wonder if the realtors have realized this...
