No shortage of deer, fawns included

The park is named for frontiersmen, though it is characterized by a very modern artificial lake. Several trails encircle the multiple bodies of water around the lake, as well as playgrounds, a boat launch, and some other facilities. Wildlife was plentiful on my visit, including numerous deer but also some very impressive wild turkeys. They were so large the first I saw of one I thought I must be back in Australia because we don't get birds that big here. Unfortunately, they decided not to pose for photographs. The visitor center was not that substantial, but it had decent facilities, and the park was free and not that far from Nashville.

Hard to believe this place is only a half hour from Broadway. They have fishing and boating but we came to do a little hiking. It wasn't very crowded on a Friday around noon and we did the two mile pretty flat paved loop around the lake. We saw a couple of deer fairly close up and that was about it for wildlife encounters. Free admission and parking, or at least i hope so since I didn't see any signs or places to pay. Lots of parking so I'm thinking it might get crowded on the weekend. This place is worth a look to do some fishing, boating or hiking.

We hiked about 4 miles on the trails today. The trails are wide and well maintained winding through the woods. Many of the larger trees exhibit burn scars and most have healed indicating that the fire was 30+ years ago. It's a pretty place with the forest canopy thick enough to keep the lower brush in check. The result is a park like setting.

We came here for a little post Christmas daytime excursion and we really loved it. There's about three picnic areas, one boat landing area and few different walking/hiking trails in the park. We walked along the beach for bit before heading over to the deer loop trail. This trail is super easy and is just about one mile long. The perfect trail to let the younger kiddos run around to get rid of that excess energy. Apparently there's a bridge here, but we didn't find it on this inaugural trip, but I can definitely say this park has not seen the last of us!

Did the Bryant Grove Trail (4 miles one way, not a loop). Nice, early walk. Must have been the first on the trail because I kept getting cobwebs all over me. Some parts of the trail appear have been recently flooded and there is some debris on the trail as a result of that. It is sad that there is also so much trash around. Did see four turtles (3 on the trail, one by the side of the trail), decent amount of wildflowers, and the trail is nice and flat. Swimming spot on at least one of the ends of the trail. Unfortunately it didn't smell all that great though. Overall a solid hike.

I had a really lovely Saturday with friends at Long Hunter State Park this past weekend. We decided to rent kayaks on Couchville Lake to enjoy the sunny and warm summer day. The employees at the kayak rental shop on the dock were SO nice and helpful. The rental rates were super reasonable: $15/hr for a single kayak and $20/hr for the double kayak. The lake was pretty quiet on a Saturday around 10am-noon, and we had no trouble finding parking. We saw several beautiful birds, turtles, and some fish swimming in the lake. In addition to the serene Couchville Lake, there are some excellent trails at Long Hunter that go along Percy Priest Lake. I really enjoy the Day Loop Trail and the Volunteer Trail. The park is well maintained and usually isn't too crowded.

This place is amazing and has tons of stuff to do for kids and adults. We didn't get to go kayaking since it was flooded but we will come back soon

Such a fun area with lots of activities for all ages. A small playground area, eating pavilion, boat rentals, as well as boat slip, and small beach area of swimming and fishing There is a paved trail loop that goes around the whole lake and a more rocky Volunteer Trail which could be more challenging. Lots of great views!

The crown jewel of this park is the two mile paved trail which circles the lake. The entrance sports a decent playground and enough ground for some limited sporting. Near the visitor entrance is another well-maintained trail leading to a rocky beach. Here you can relax on the rocks and enjoy a lunch before a short 1/2 mile hike back to your car. For those up for a tougher, but worthwhile hike take the Volunteer Trail. By taking the long haul, you'll come upon a campsite. Overall, plenty of trail options around a nice body of water further compliment Tennessee's large inventory of State Parks.

Long Hunter State Park is a 2,600-acre park along the eastern coast of J. Percy Priest Lake. I visited yesterday to check out the Volunteer Trail, which I had heard was really beautiful. The Volunteer Trail is a 11/12 mile hike (5-6 miles out and back - ONE WAY) that follows the shore of Percy Priest Lake for most of its length. Full disclosure: I didn't do the whole 12; I got too hungry and turned around around mile 5 and probably did 10 of 12. The trail was well-marked (with all of the fall foliage on the ground, I lost the trail a couple of times for a minute or two but quickly found white markings on nearby trees that mark the Volunteer Trail) and really beautiful (lots of great scenic lake views). I saw several deer as well as a blue heron. I got some really great photographs along the trail! The trail is mostly flat (not a super strenuous hike), but it can be a bit rocky (pay attention to where you're walking). The Volunteer Trail shares the path with the Day Loop for the first 1.4 miles or so. After the Volunteer Trail split off the Day Loop, I saw hardly any people (maybe only 1 or 2 over the next couple of hours) - but I was hiking on a Wednesday afternoon (Veterans Day is a holiday from my job) - so it may be crowded on weekends. The parking lot at the trail head was large and had a porta potty. (FYI: my iPhone directed me incorrected - it had me turn right on the street, when the parking lot and trail head were left, but I could see the parking area, so it was an easy fix.) Overall, it was a great hike, and I plan on returning soon to finish the whole 12 miles!

The trail around Couchville Lake in Longhunter State Park is a beautiful serene place for a walk. The trail around the lake is paved and well maintained. You often encounter deer and squirrels along the trail. It is a family friendly place to enjoy nature.

Beautiful spot to have a panic or just to get away from the city. Lots of trees and a beautiful lake. A must go-to for the family or alone.

Beautiful state park in the fall! Easy walking paths with scenic views of the lake. Lots of wilderness you can get lost in for hours. Spotted acorns, spiders spinning webs, deers grazing, colorful autumn leaves and even cactus growing! Parking is free and clean bathrooms on site.

We made our reservation through www.recreation.gov (military affiliation not required), and only a few sites were unreserved. Even on a weekday in April, it's a popular place! There are roughly 60 sites, all with electricity and water but not sewer hook-ups at the sites. (there is a separate shared dump station). Prices range from $28-$32 with the more expensive sites being those that are waterfront (if you're lucky enough to snag one!) A discount is available for National Park Service Interagency Senior Lifetime Pass-holders. What's to like? Well-maintained, clean campground. In fact, you're given a trash bag upon arrival to encourage you to keep your site clean. On-site fun, including swimming and boating on the lake, as well as a playground. Friendly and helpful staff. Kudos to the gentleman at the Attendant Booth. A bathhouse with showers and laundry facilities. Benches with a water view to enjoy the sunsets. Some pull-through campsites. Good security. The gate is locked each night from 10 pm-6 am (although we were informed how to enter/exit if we needed to). Reasonable price. Also, Nashville is within 30 minutes. And, what's not to like? We were informed that skunks frequent the area, so you need to store food in approved containers. (We didn't see or smell any). We experienced high winds during our visit, so boating and/or swimming were out of the question. Also, Wi-Fi is not provided at this campground.

Review for knobs campground Laverne Tennessee…read more I drove up to Tennessee to work for a couple weeks. I made a weeklong reservation at Poole Knobs campground. They only had one site available for all week so I felt really lucky to get the last one. When I arrived I realized just how lucky I really was. I saw on the USACE website that they had a family of nesting Bald Eagles in the park. They said they had closed several sites to give the Eagles some space. Did you know that if you disturb a Bald or Golden Eagle in any way at all it's $100,000 fine and a year in prison and that's for your FIRST OFFENSE!! I don't even know anybody who can afford $100,000 fine. So I'm staying away from those birds. First day I was here it was OK; I got my tent set up by myself and got things straightened out. I started a little fire but went to bed early. I was pooped The next day (Saturday) I looked at the weather and saw there was a big storm coming in. Oh great. I go to co ER my tent and wouldn't you know it; I had forgotten the top of my tent. I don't know how I did that because I rolled it up last and I always try to roll the top in with the rest of the tent. I had my hammock tarp, poles and a lot of rope in the car so I decided to rig something up. Come out OK and later when the rain started I was pretty pleased to see I didn't have any kind of leaks or blowing or anything like that. I checked the weather this morning; we have thunderstorms both daytime and night time all the way through Thursday afternoon. Friday is supposed to be nice and sunny about 80°. Guess what I'm checking out on Friday. How about that? Anyway the campground is really nice. The sites are pretty private they're not all on top of each other. There are a lot of pull through sites with full hookups. They also have nice tent sites. There is plenty of shade too. Nice on these scorching hot Tennessee summers. This morning I got up at 5:15 AM as usual when every bird in the county started to sing. I don't know how they all know when to start but they do. It's 5:15 AM. I went ahead and got up. Might as well, I was awake by then. I walked over to the fence to look for the Eagles and tried to find their nest. They camp host had told me if I stand by the sign then I'd probably be able to see them. But wouldn't you know it, there are two signs. I tried one and looked and looked but didn't see anything. I went to the other. I looked and looked here too but didn't see anything. The trees are so full of leaves that you really can't see a nest, even though it as big as a bed. Luckily one of the Eagles spread his wings and flapped a couple of times so I saw where the nest is. I couldn't really see the Eagles or the nest but at least I know where it is. I'm going to add a couple photos the Rangers took and shared. Saturday night a big storm blew in and I'll tell you, it scared the pants off me. I have all these big trees over my tent and I was afraid a limb would come down and smash my head. So my chicken butt got in my truck and drove down to the boat ramp parking area. No trees around there to kill me. I sat there for a little while and watched the boats hurrying off the lake. The wind was fierce and the lake was very choppy. A really nice ski boats came up and had to wait for their turn for the ramp. Before long the big waves washed over the back of that nice boat and sunk it. Right there beside the ramp. I called the camp host and told her and she called the TWRA Rangers. Before long a big big boat with 1000 humongous lights all over it came across the lake up to the sunken boat. You never see lights like that on a personal craft. I would not have wanted to be out on that lake in any kind of boat. Two TWRA pick-up trucks also came into the parking lot and went down to help. The big boat maneuvered the sunken boat over to where the trailer was. They got it up on the trailer and then the TWRA pick-up towed their truck and trailer out of the water. I'm guessing being full of water made it too heavy to pull out with one truck. The TWRA truck pulled them out far enough to open the drain and they were finally able to drive away. I was really proud of those TWRA rangers for coming out in that storm to help those people. The wind was raging and it was pouring buckets and there was crazy lightning all around. They are heroes to me. Anyway back to Poole Knobs campground. I can't say enough good things about this place. They have beautiful sites, really nice bath houses with hot running showers and friendly hosts. A lot of the sites sit right on the lake. I hear it is a great place to fish from the bank. If you're looking to camp in this area (near Nashville) you can't really beat this one. But like most great places you'll need to get your reservations in as early as you can.
