Wonderful studio! My two daughters have been attending classes here for years now. The studio is inviting and instantly felt like home for our family. The teachers and staff truly care about their students, their technique and their training. My eldest is on the company team and the growth I have seen from her not only in dance, but as a young lady is something I am so proud of. The studio has taught her teamwork, hard work and dedication. It has also sparked such a beautiful passion for dance that has now been passed to her little sister. My child had already been being bullied before we walked into this studio to see how things where. The owner, another parent and the desk staff made it worse by allowing a parent to make up lies and spread rumors about my child that are not true. But even worse then all of that the owner was very mean and unkind to my daughter to her face over these awful lies being made about my child!! I can not rave enough about Milford Dance Academy!!!! The previous review is a bit dated and no longer relevant since the front desk person she is speaking of is no longer there. Also, many of the parents she complained about are no longer there due to their children graduating. In the 2017 recital, there was only 1 Adult tap class and 1 Starline Dad's Dance which I personally would not consider "a lot" or "strange." It is a little unfortunate that the previous reviewer let the other parents' behavior guide her decision in reviewing the actual business. As to my own personal experience, I believe MDA appreciates and cares for all their students. The teachers are well versed in many dance genres as well as College educated in dance, choreography, and dance instruction. They believe that proper dance technique is the foundation of a great dance education. Not only do they want the kids to have fun but, they are always rooting for the kids to do better and better with each passing year. Teachers are open, honest, and kind about student's progress and behavior which I find to be refreshing and helpful. If your child is looking to break bad dance habits from former studios this is the place! MDA has a competition team called Starline and they are a pleasure to watch. Their technique is unparalleled compared to other studios in the area. Their competition team teachers are well trained and creative, doing all of their own choreography (which means no choreography fees!). Their team has won numerous awards over the years for choreography, technique, and entertainment. If competition isn't your thing, MDA works equally as hard with their recreation classes. Many people in the company started out as a recreation dancer. Classes can range from 30 minutes for a tiny tots class to 45 for a regular recreation class. All dance genres, ages, and levels are offered. Dance classes include ballet, pointe (must be evaluated by the instructor for safety reasons), tap, lyrical, jazz, modern, contemporary, hip hop, gymnastics, pom, musical theater, and tiny tots. The prices are very reasonable for dance and there are different types of discounts available as well. The recitals are always professional and entertaining and the individual dances are always age-appropriate! The studio itself is a lovely location. I love that it has ample parking and is near downtown Milford, Kroger, Walgreens, CVS, Americus, Subway, a hair salon, car wash, etc. Parents can easily drop a child off to their class and go run errands or sit in the BIG lobby and chat with friends or get work done. Free WIFI is available for customers as well as access to two bathrooms. They have three studios one small, one medium, and one large. Each studio has a viewing window that is opened the first week out of every month so that parents can watch their kids! Teachers also will frequently invite parents into the classroom to watch and encourage videotaping so that their child can practice at home. A dressing room is available for the kids to change in and lockers can also be used for kids who are in many dances. The dressing room has tables, chairs, a microwave, and vending machine with drinks so that kids can easily have dinner or snacks there. The owner/director has been in business for 20 years! MDA is run very professionally and I know she has the children's best interest at heart. She is kind, realistic, approachable, and awesome at tap! MDA also offers Zumba classes three days a week and they will kick your butt! Ms. Brittany is a fun, energetic, outgoing teacher that will definitely motivate you! She mixes up her classes often so you will never get bored. There are so many ages and abilities that take Zumba with her. She encourages everyone to do their best. It honestly doesn't feel like a workout, sweating has never been so much fun! The best thing about it is there is no commitment! You can buy a punch card or pay as you go and for $5 a class you can't beat it! You can't find any workout class in Milford for that price. MDA is an all-around fantastic studio! You really can't beat the "community" feel. The instructors are fabulous and they actually care about proper dance technique. Took my daughter here one year. It didn't last. Every time I had to approach the counter, I did so with dread. There was always a wait, and the woman who worked there was always curt and rude. It got so bad that I actually complained to the owner. She said it was her mother, and she knew it was a problem, but didn't know how to address it. Well, if she doesn't/hasn't addressed it, her mother is going to put her out of business. I heard other parents complain about it on more than one occasion. Trouble with costumes for recital. They ordered the wrong size for my daughter... twice. They admitted it was their fault, and they did take care of it, but it took forever to get it all straightened out. Kind of a headache. Their 'recital' was a little strange. Apparently, they have adult classes as well, and their was a high percentage of performances by the adults. And not to be rude, but I honestly just wasn't interested in watching these older ladies dancing about the place. The kids are cute... I could have watched them for hours, but.... it just struck me as a little odd. The other parents there were rude... they let their kids run amok. It was unpleasant to sit with them while watching/waiting for daughter's class. I realize this isn't really their fault, but I never had these types of experiences at other studios. My daughter took ballet there last year (2010-11) with Ms. Kathie who was exceptional. My daughter was 4-5 years old at the time and her last dance experience was at 2.5 years old and she cried the whole time, so I was nervous. Ms. Kathie was great with my daughter and all the kids. Lots of encouragement and praise. They have a viewing window that is open for the parents on the first class of the month but towards the end of the year Ms. Kathie was so happy and proud of their accomplishments that she not only opened the window but the door as well, and invited us in. The owner was manning the desk when we first started but she was able to hire a pleasant receptionist about halfway through the year. No problems at all. As far as the parents go...they are loud and hang out in cliques but I didn't let them bother me. Some of the little girls were just like their moms and I had to smoothe my daughters hurt feelings a couple of times but I think you will find rude people no matter where you go. They don't have a sign-up fee which I thought was awesome. Last year was only $30 a month and one of the cheapest places I found. Unfortunately, a year later it goes up by $18 which I think is crazy. She's still going though. Since my daughter didn't complete her classes when she was 2.5 yrs, I don't have anything to compare it to, but I thought recital fees were kind of high. Each recital ticket is $15 and parents don't get one for free. Recital books are $20. DVD's $40. Pictures were more expensive than my son's baseball and football photos. The recital outfit was only $40, so I don't think that's bad. Overall, my daughter loved dance last year and we are headed back to MDA again this year. read more
