Mile High Crossfit! I waited for a few months of membership to write, so I knew I had consistent experiences. I had decided last year, around August-ish, that I was going to start putting in some more effort to get into shape. I am the kind of person that isn't knowledgeable enough in terms of fitness and diet to get on the wagon and stay on, so I thought that a crossfit gym would be a good idea. I reached out to a several places that are within 10 miles or less of my house/office. I visited 2-3 of them and asked some questions while trying to get a feel for the type of environment that I would be committing to. From the time that I walked into Mile High Crossfit, I immediately felt great about this place, compared to the others. I knew from the first 5 minutes that, barring anything unforeseen, this would be the place I picked. It might have something to do with being greeted by the sounds of Notorious BIG blaring throughout this entire gym, but who knows. Then I met a badass looking guy named Kris who introduced himself and asked me what was going on. Kris was all tatted up and cool as a cucumber. The best part of my interaction with him was that he wasn't "selling" anything. He asked me about my goals and I told him what I was thinking. He explained that crossfit was what he used as part of his conditioning when he was a professional MMA FIGHTER for 9 years! Aside from knowing that this guy could literally kill me in 2 seconds, I was getting amped at the thought that he was a trainer or something here. Then I came to find out, he is the CO-owner with his wife Bekka. She is equally as cool and ripped. This couldn't have been any better.
If you aren't familiar with the movements that are involved in most crossfit workouts, they have an on-ramp period that lasts 30 days. You get to come in, work with them on the movements to ensure that you are comfortable. Then, after 3 days of on-ramp you can participate in the workout classes. This entire time, you are under no obligation to go into a contract with them. You can evaluate yourself and ask any questions that you have around the process. This is a Zero pressure experience. They have created an environment at this place that is like none other. After a few months of membership, I can say that they learn your name quickly, they take pride in doing things the right way, they have fun, and they LOVE what they do.
My biggest fear at first was that I would get injured doing some of the complex movements or I would be too out of shape to participate in some of the classes. I quickly learned that they spend time every single class making sure that we are all warm and mobile so there is less possibility for injury! Also, they start every day with a framework of what we will be doing in terms of warm-up, mobility, and working out. Within that and without calling anyone out, they demonstrate the modifications that should be applied to every single movement if you cant quite do it, just yet. After a few short months of consistency, my friends are making comments about how I look and even my girlfriend is noticing the increase in my strength/tone. #BONUS
One of the best parts is watching as newbies come in and want to check the gym out. They see the same Kris, Bekka, Lou (Coach), and Rob (Coach) that I saw that first month and every day after. They are knowledgeable, they care about you and your goals, and they are motivating!
The workouts are class-style for the most part, although they do have an "open gym" scheduled daily as well. During the time you choose to participate, your class will be lead by one of the awesome coaches the entire time. They will help you with form or any other area that you need it. They are there with you the entire time that it takes everyone to complete the workout. (Typical Class Schedule below)
Crossfit isn't for everyone and I totally get that. You have to be ready to make this a part of your lifestyle in order for it to do for you, what you truly want.
That said, if Crossfit IS for you then there isn't a better place to go than to MILE HIGH CROSSFIT. Trust me on this. I am not as fit as I want to be, but from the looks of the people at Mile High Crossfit, if I continue working hard, it is just a matter of time!
