We had too much fun in Valdez exploring the hiking trails, and by the time we got back to the food area, it was 9 pm. I'm not exaggerating when I say we tried every other restaurant in the area and they were closed. We crossed our fingers and walked into Mikes and were greeted warmly and sat right away! The look of this place is like half between a bar and a Italian restaurant which is a bit off-putting at first, but by the end of my trip to Alaska was probably my favorite restaurant we ate at! There were a few people at the bar, our server taking great care of us, and just a super chill welcoming vibe. We got the halibut fish and chips and the spicy vodka pasta, and they were both insane! One of the worst restaurant experiences I've ever had. My partner's food arrived nearly 30 minutes before mine. By the time my lasagna finally showed up, my partner had rated what of his meal was warm. Unfortunately, my food wasn't worth the wait. The lasagna had the texture and flavor of wet cardboard--I've honestly had better frozen Stouffer's lasagna from the grocery store. My best friend's ravioli tasted like it came straight out of a frozen package. Every dish looked and tasted like it had been microwaved, complete with congealed cheese on top. I asked for crushed red pepper and was handed a salt and pepper grinder instead, which pretty much summed up the attention to detail. I sent my lasagna back untouched because it was inedible, and my partner sent their cold meal back as well. Even though neither meal was eaten, they still tried to charge us for both. Only after we questioned the bill did the manager come over. He asked what was wrong, and I told him exactly how I felt: every dish we received was awful. This place seems to have completely given up on quality. The food tasted like frozen meals reheated in a microwave, the timing was unacceptable, and no one seemed interested in making things right until it came time to pay. If you're visiting Valdez, do yourself a favor and skip Mike's Palace. Spend your money at The Fat Mermaid instead, where the food is consistently excellent and the staff actually seem to care about the experience they're providing. Mike's Palace isn't just disappointing--it's the kind of restaurant that gives visitors the wrong impression of Valdez's food scene. We were seated in a nice booth. Pretty quiet except for a few people watching FIFA. They were having fun though. My husband ordered a roast beef sandwich and fries, I had the BLAT with onion rings. The onion rings were cooked perfectly. The French fries, were French fries. My sandwich always good, wish the bacon was warm. My husband enjoyed his, just wish they gave a side of the creamy horseradish, A bit pricey but we are on the coast. Overall not too bad. read more

My husband and I were both very disappointed eating here. Food was BLAND. We ordered the calamari which would've been good if they believed in seasoning or at least serving it with a lemon. We also got the bacon wrapped scallops, there were 6 TINY scallops that you could only taste bacon. I wanted a sandwich but they don't serve them after 4pm so I got the halibut fingers for $58. There were 4 good sized pieces but halibut was flavorless, the coleslaw was disgusting (I usually like any and all coleslaw), the fries were good; it is served with tarter sauce which I did not like, I asked for cocktail sauce which tasted like ketchup. My husband got the pescatora, it also lacked flavor but overall wasn't bad, the portion was also large. For a $153 without tip the meal was not even close to worth the cost. After a busy sea day Mikes palace hit the spot. They have a variety of food selections. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. They have heated toilet seats which is super funny. The food came out fast. I do wish the waiter came around more with water especially since it was not as busy. The price rang is a little pricy but it's also Valdez ak so it's only accurate to be that way. We had the sweet heat pizza and it was delicious a must try. Late July 2025, came in for dinner and we had great, generous portion meals. I love Chioppino when I find it and this place served up a flavorful seafood chioppino; full of salmon, scallops, squid, small clams, and big shrimp! My friend had the Pasta Vesuvio, a big flavorful serving of penne pasta, shredded chicken, sun dried tomatoes, and mushrooms. Open year round, which is hard to find in Valdez! View of the harbor from the dining area, and large menu. We stopped in for lunch and were greeted promptly and seated. Prices for lunch were typical for Alaska. Both sandwiches were delicious. The fries were normal but nothing amazing. The wine pours were heavy. Wow, my husband and I had the most enjoyable evening at Mikes Place. Our Airbnb hosts recommended there. We were greeted and seated by a smiling hostess. Our server was friendly and helpful with recommendation. The new manager stopped by our table and visited for a minute. Our food was delicious with generous portions. Service is abysmal, food sucks and everything is overpriced. We waited over 15 minutes to even receive menus and everything went downhill from there. The whole experience took over 2 hours. Awful food all around. Burgers came out cold. Pasta was missing most ingredients and was molten hot in spots and cold in others, and our lava cake was still frozen in the middle. We couldn't get into the Fat Mermaid so tries Mike's next door. Big Mistake! My "Cedar Plank" Salmon was not cooked on a cedar plank at all; instead it was perched a piece of brown plastic and was so overcooked as to be inedible. They also mixed up our orders and by the time it was sorted out, the plates were cold on arrival. Came in for dinner and don't know that I've ever been so disappointed with a restaurant. I ordered one of their specials, the chimichanga, and don't know that I've ever had worse tasting food in my entire life. The chimichanga was just filled with a little bit of cheese and chunks of unseasoned roast. That is NOT a chimichanga. Furthermore, the guacamole was nothing more than Wholly Gaucamole, and their salsa had an extremely bitter, rotten aftertaste. When I raised my concern with the server, she told me I'd still be charged for the item because it's not her fault I didn't like the food, and, ultimately, nothing was actually wrong with it. Considering I ordered a chimichanga and got something nothing like it that tasted horrible, I would say it's their fault and not mine. I ordered quesadillas as a different entree (after one bite of the chimichanga, I couldn't eat anymore). I should have learned my lesson about ordering Mexican food from them. The quesadillas were mediocre at best. Once again, the meat was completely unseasoned and had pretty much no flavor whatsoever. Needless to say, I will never be back here and would NOT recommend this restaurant to anyone. The other four people in my party were also very unimpressed with their meals. Definitely not a place to order Veal Parmigiana. It was like eating cube steak covered in cheese and spaghetti from a can. My husband had a bacon burger. The bacon was dry, the burger was dryer, but the bun was soggy. Finally, the Coke tasted like it came from the bottom of the barrel. We both ate less than half our meals. Fortunately, our friend was there to take the left overs for her dog. It was one of those meals that makes you apologize to your body for eating it and your purse for wasting your money. I drove 2.5 hrs to Valdez and after a day of trail walk and hiking in the snow I was hungry like really, the restaurant I initially wanted to try was closed so I didn't see the reviews before visiting. I ordered to go and the service was ok, however as soon as I took the first bite the chicken had a sour taste and pasta was very soggy. The meal had zero flavor. I had the club sandwich and it was absolutely delightful. Turkey bacon lettuce tomato and cheese. It was cut up into nice triangles and a toothpick stuck through to help hold it together. I'm not sure what's slower, the movement of the Shoup Glacier or the service at Mike's Palace. The decor is an eclectic mix of Alaskana, what appears to be decorations from a previous life as a Greek restaurant (flags, menu font, Acropolis picture, etc) and, charmingly enough, Christmas lights. The food was good and expectedly overpriced. I'll go back, but next time I'll probably take a book. read more

DON'T EAT HERE!!! We ate at Mike's Palace (definitely a misleading name) in Valdez yesterday afternoon after a long (and amazing!) day on the boat. We just needed food, so we figured anything would do--but we were sadly mistaken. We ordered mozzarella sticks for an app. They tasted like they had been frozen for at least two years. The marina was watered down and tasteless. Then came the main course: the seafood brochette with halibut, scallops, shrimp, and salmon. Sounded delicious... looked mediocre... and tasted worse. The seafood also tasted like it had been frozen for two years, and it was all extremely over-cooked. The lemon garlic sauce was overly lemony--like they used too much lemon juice (from a bottle) instead of fresh lemon zest and juice. The scallops were rubbery. Salmon and halibut were tough. Shrimp was the least terrible, but it was still not good. And on top of all that, it was all so incredibly bland (minus the overly lemony-ness of the sauce, and that wasn't a good thing). So that was the food--then there was the service. It took 10 minutes for our server to get to our table, and she acted annoyed at our presence, even though there were only a couple tables in the entire restaurant. She took our drink orders, came back with our drinks quickly (the only highlight of the meal), took our food orders, we waited forever for our food, and we never saw her again until she came by to ask if we were ready for our checks. She never asked what we thought of our food (because we would have sent it back if she had). We didn't even see her to attempt to flag her down after we got our food. All of this would probably have been all right if it weren't for the price: that crappy-ass, nasty pasta dish cost $42.95... for frozen seafood and some spaghetti noodles in a nasty lemon sauce, and I didn't even eat half of it. Save your time and your money, and just go somewhere else!!! Seriously, you'd be better off making PB&J sammies with stale bread!!! read more

In our visit to Valdez, we wanted a seafood place. We chose Mike's Palace. The ambience is not one of great tastes since they mixed so many different decor styles. Service was a bit slow even when the place wasn't too full. We ordered a seafood brochette with pasta, and a classic shrimp cocktail. The shrimp cocktail was nothing classic, it had very few shrimp and lots of lettuce in the bottom (yes, lettuce in a cocktail???) the sauce was weird tasting. Mike's Palace is a little weird, but pretty good. By the ambiance and by the menu, it's a little difficult to tell what type of restaurant The Palace actually is. There's seafood, there's Italian, there's a little Mexican section, and there's a "light eats" section that includes...a bacon burger? I'd say it's largely an Italian/Seafood joint, and that's probably what you should order. I did not. I decided to get the fajitas and I was very underwhelmed. There was no sizzle and the beef was tough and the onions and peppers were soft rather than crisp. Envied everyone else's dishes, mainly the chicken parm (with some pretty handsome broccoli, especially for Alaska!) and the pizza. Next time I'll definitely get one of those. Best thing about this place is that it's open really late for sleepy Valdez, EVEN IN THE WINTER. Like most places to eat in Valdez, it's pretty spendy. It still might be the best restaurant in town, though. read more

We were pleasantly surprised with tonight's dinner at Mike's. After reading the reviews we decided to stick to Italian options and were happy we did! My Penne Vesuvio (awesome creamy vodka sauce) was terrific and a huge portion (although the pasta was more of a rigatoni than penne)...hubby's Lasagna was good but the marinara sauce in there definitely needed a boost of flavor...pretty anemic for a housemade marinara sauce. Again the portion was very healthy and came with garlic bread (but mine didn't...good thing he shared!). Very odd to not just provide complimentary bread with all Italian dishes...and the $5 dinner salads were very good...came with freshly made dressings. One is definitely a single portion vs big enough to share. Our server was perfect...supper low key but "on it". She was also the bartender so seemed more experienced than the other younger waiter so we were happy as clams. Mike's was a great choice for our last night in Valdez! read more

We came to Valdez on a rainy weekend. The restaurant filled fast, but the service was great. I had veal piccata and it was delicious. The flavors of lemon and butter burst throughout the dish. But it was a rude and quite frankly what little food we had (crab cakes we didn't eat, and rolls which we did eat but had margarine , and a glass of moscato)was quite subpar. Yikes. I've never experienced a worse server than we had at Mike's on Saturday. Not only was she rushing around, acting as though the 3 tables in the entire establishment were wildly overwhelming for her, she also acted as though us paying customers were nothing but an annoyance; consistently making remarks about how busy she was and how she didn't have the time to even explain a menu item. The real issue though was that she was blatantly rude to our CHILDREN. I'm talking about an infant, as well as well-behaved 4, 7 and 9 year old kids. She even went so far as to roll her eyes, and cut them off from ordering their own meals. Sorry lady, but if you can't find it in your heart to be a decent human being to literal babies, find a new job. Customer service is NOT your strong suit. Unfortunate, because our food was decent, but the experience was so very bad, we will never be back, and will share our experience. 0/10 recommend. read more
