Bottom line up front... Dr Grillo is worth it! A little over 5 years ago I started a journey that recently culminated in complete satisfaction. As a survivor of throat cancer, the after effects of chemotherapy and radiation caused multiple overlapping issues for my jaw, teeth, and ultimately my smile. When I was referred to Dr Grillo he took the time to evaluate my situation and offered me two paths, laying out the positives and negatives of each option. I eventually chose the more strategic and in-depth choice. That choice involved him coordinating a team of himself, an orthodontist, and a jaw surgeon. It eventually required time for the orthodontist to realign my teeth to prepare for the surgeon to do his magic, and eventually giving Dr Grillo the right platform to fix my teeth. His experience and expertise is deeply appreciated as he laid out a plan and executed it over the long haul. I just wanted to write this review to say thank you so much to Dr. Grillo and his team for all the help over the years. I had a very traumatic experience with a past dentist back in 2019 who really messed up a few of my teeth, which in turn affected my trigeminal nerve and caused me to develop an open bite as well as extremely bad and debilitating chronic pain. The whole ordeal de-railed my life completely because of the amount of pain I was in due to the trigeminal neuropathy, but I was determined to find a solution. I searched around for a new dentist/prosthodontist to help fix my teeth, and after seeing a lot of people, I ultimately decided to trust Dr. Grillo with the restorative work that I needed. Over the course of a few years, combined with orthodontic treatment, I was able to slowly get enough restorative procedures on my teeth to return them back to the way they were prior to the whole accident I went through. I typically do not write reviews, however, I wanted others to know the excellent quality of care I received from Dr. Grillo and his team on more than one occasion. He has tackled and successfully accomplished very difficult dental issues for me that other dental professionals were unable to complete. He is very pro-active in working with the patient and has always given me his honest opinion. He and his staff are genuine and nice to be around which makes it nice to be there. Recently Dr. Grillo and his team, including Able the lab technician, replaced an existing crown on my front tooth matching it perfectly in size, shape, and color to the adjacent existing older crown. This was next to impossible due to the age and make-up of the older crown. I'm not just blowing smoke with this 5 star review. Without going into detail about my problems, I will just say that they were on top of it!! I had some special needs that they explained to me instead of vice versa!! I can't believe how calm & relaxed that made me feel. Dr Grillo was recommended by a coworker so I went to them for a cleaning and consultation for large amount of restorative work I know I need. I've been dealing with teeth problems my whole life which come from my mom's genes and an accident I had when I was young. Anyway, the staff here is very friendly and I got a great cleaning. Then we did a comprehensive work up of what I need to have done and the cost. I knew I was going to a specialist for prosthodontics so it wouldn't be cheap, but the cost was extremely high comparative to other estimates I have. The work he recommended was the same as what I had been consulted on by a prior specialist I was working with at one of the nation's best practices located in Boston. But just before we were going to begin, I moved to San Diego for a new job. I trusted what Dr Grillo wanted to do was right and he was very detailed, but my previous dental practice worked with their patients much better financially. And so does the practice I'm at now. This practice requires you to front 100% of the cost at each visit, instead of you paying your portion and then they get the balance from your insurance carrier, like most others places. Their idea of working with you in terms of payment is to recommend CareCredit which carries interest rates higher than my credit cards. Dr Grillo probably delivers amazing results but he is not for the budget conscious. read more

Here's the thing about dentists: all the immediate, in-office experiences are very important; but far more important is how the work "holds" over time. You won't know if a dentist is any good until 5-10 years later when the work either endures or fails. I've had tens of thousands of dollars of restoration work done throughout my life (I'm 65). My mouth is a minefield; a result of genetics, past negligence, and poor dentistry when I was younger and didn't know any better. I have one implant, several root canals and multiple crowns, fillings, etc. I've seen dozens of dentists over time and I can say without hesitation that Dr. Grillo is the most thorough, skilled, exacting dentist I've ever known and I trust him implicitly. And, his work has held up extremely well in the near 14 years I've been his patient. He has all the personal qualities that make up a good dentist: he's caring, affable, level-headed, meticulous, and calm under pressure. His staff is excellent--supportive and efficient. His office is technically state-of-the-art and I believe his lab of choice is one of the best on the west coast. I know this because I consulted a very good prosthodontist in Seattle who used the same lab (which is in SoCal) and wouldn't work with anyone else. I'd like to comment on Chris M.'s review. I've had insurance claims with Dr. Grillo's office (before August 2012) and paid nothing until the claim was approved by the insurance company (Delta Dental), at which time I paid the deductible. I will say, I wish the office had better financial options for patients who have no insurance (I have no dental insurance at the moment). Regardless, two stars is pretty harsh simply because a dental office wouldn't work with you financially. read more

I am so, so relieved to have found Dr. Grillo and his team. I've had crowns on my front teeth since breaking them as a young teen. I went through 4 different, good dentists in the next twenty-ish years who did their best to keep my smile looking good, but I had a chronic problem with crowns coming loose and (ick) leaking. Finally I found Dr. Grillo. He explained that my crowns were just a very tricky fit, but was confident that he could fix the problem. From the very first exam, I noticed just how incredibly thorough and detail oriented Dr. Grillo is. He definitely takes his time and makes sure everything is exactly right--aesthetically as well as functionally. My crowns look amazing and the fit is PERFECT. I have had zero problems, and they look natural and beautiful. I now visit his office for regular cleanings, and his hygienist is the best I've ever had visits with. Dr. Grillo and his staff are the friendliest, best serving staff I have ever been to as a customer. I had a severe implant injury and both my front teeth #8 and #9 needed replacement. I have a long history with procedures to these teeth and I have been to military dentists and dozens of civilian dentists for opinions. The receptionist at this office is amazing and as friendly as they get, and Dr. Grillo is highly professional, a perfectionist and a skilled prosthodontist. I was uninsured and the office went above and beyond their responsibilities by arguing and explaining my situation with a victims insurance fun to cut the cost of my 16,000 procedure down to about 7,500. My teeth look better than they ever have and after spending about 30 hours in the chair there I can honestly say this is your best option in San Diego County. If you want your work done right the first time, and a good experience in the office you should come here. If you like rework, mistakes and bad referrals, there are plenty of other offices you could try out. read more

Dr.Grillo's staff are warm, friendly and engaging. Appointment reminders via phone text or emails are great. His office is immaculate, modern and located on the top floor of the building with windows in every room. The creation of the natural light makes the "dentist" office a bit more soothing. TV available for overhead viewing or head sets for your listening comfort. I have never had to wait more than 5 minutes for any of my appointments. The office hygienist is thorough and gentle. Dr.Grillo has hands of a master. He is gentle and detailed. He explains everything and does was is needed. We have always had follow up phone calls to check on how we were feeling when extensive work had been done. Our family has found the perfect dentist.
