There are also some simple bathrooms, benches, covered tables/gathering spaces, and grills. We parked in the first area and then walked to the second parking area to enter the trail. We decided to do the longer loop first (~1.35 miles) and then the shorter loop (~.5 miles) afterward. Although you do need to watch for random tree roots, it was a pretty even pathway throughout with some cute bridges. It was very quiet when we visited right before lunchtime, and we only passed half a dozen people and a few dogs the whole time. Although I was somewhat expecting a deer to jump out at any moment, we did see some smaller birds and chipmunks. Since it hadn't rained for quite a while, the whole path was dry. In all, it was a really nice walk. I would return here for a relaxed stroll again in the future.

She's too young for book club so we look for other fun stuff to do. This park is on our rotation. It's not my favorite because of the road right next to it that leads to the cemetery. You would not think that many people would take that road but you would be wrong. I have to watch my Z like a hawk as her self preservation skills are zilch. There is a soccer field here and the park is named after the lovely soccer player who was killed by a car that veered off the road and hit her while she was practicing. Her name on the park reminds me to keep a sharp eye on my sweet Z and hug her a little closer. A fitting testimony to an innocent teen who should still be with us. If you're looking for a nice slide for the young ones and some swings, this is the place. There are other things here but quite seriously, I don't know what you're supposed to do on them.

There are NO nearby grocery store or gas station. but that should not effect your lake life relaxed stay. A bit South of Joliet, we had no idea how to get there, and were way out of our comfort zone in an adventurous sense. I was told that our friend had "plenty of beds" so surely this could not be a trailer home. To my surprise these deluxe double wides, or manufactures homes, are extremely nice. Many have large porches, garages, or 2 floors! A lot of the boat docks have coverings and winter storage options like lifting the boat directly out the water where it sits. This is a "speed boat" lake. A flooded strip mine that gets up to 100ft deep in the center. There is NO sand bar, or party cove. Only families with kids skiing, tubing, and cruising. The lake could not be more picturesque with a cute bridge, various channels and beautiful landscaping. We cannot wait to be invited back, and will keep an ear to the street when a property, complete with Boat, goes up for sale.

Oh boy, where to begin. I grew up a block away from this park and I had a lot of memories here. I…read moreused to play baseball here, play in the playground, when I went to Block Jr. High, I would walk through here on a daily basis. As I got older, I would jog around the park for exercise. I got chased by gangs here, I had birthday parties and rode my bike through here. I was in an ATV accident with a friend where he lost a leg when he crashed into a tree here. I got into fights here, I cried over my childhood woes here. I remember in the 80s, there was a HUGE breakdancing contest here that filled the park. I would do chin-ups on the old Vietnam cannon that was here (now gone). There's a greenhouse here that you should see at least once. I played tennis here. Do you know a long time ago, there used to be a zoo here? Now they ripped out the baseball fields and there's some crazy water slide. They even inserted a parking lot in the southeast corner. There was a statue of George Washington and someone knocked the head off of it when I was a kid. SO many memories of Washington Park.

Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park is a great hidden gem on Governors State University's campus…read more I can't even remember how I found out about it, but I was probably looking for outdoor activities that I wasn't already sick of. Either way, I'm glad I made my way here. We still haven't covered the full grounds because of the size, but we'll come back when we have more time to fully explore all of the sculptures and nature areas. The layout can be a little tricky, but if you're up for an afternoon of wandering, it's perfect. We even did our 2020 holiday card photo here.

I read about this park in the Tribune and couldn't believe it existed. I'm pretty well informed…read moreabout outdoor activities and things to see and do..but this one flew under the radar. Until today. Beautiful day to roam around a fairly large expanse of land. The Governor's State website says the grounds here measure 100 acres. It's a big place. The only bummer that I found with the website is that there isn't a map that guides you to the various sculptures. You have to find them all yourself, which, it's hard to track down some of them. We spent a few hours here and maybe found close to 25 of the supposed 29 sculptures. The sculptures themselves greatly range in size, form, composition and design. You know what they say about art..it's all in the eye of the beholder. Sculpture is no different, but usually sculptures are a little bit easier to enjoy give the size and difficulty to build them. I think our fav was the Paul Bunyan. Hard not to dote on the big fella. There was a white twisty orb thing too that I thought was pretty cool. In all honesty there wasn't a sculpture that I didn't enjoy. Whether you're a fan of art, looking to get outdoors, enjoy walking, or just like a little eye candy in your day..this is a good place to check out. And..it's free. Open 365 days a year. Enjoy!
