I waited for a valet to come meet me at my car - I waited and waited. No one came out. I noticed that there was an open parking spot on the street about 30 feet in front of the valet stand on Summit Street, so I pulled forward and parked my car at the meter parking on the street just past the valet pylon. It was public street parking. I put change in the meter and walked into the Chop House restaurant. While standing at the hostess stand waiting to be seated a young man ran up to me and said "sir, is that your silver Mercedes parked on the street". I replied "yes" (thinking that something had happened to my car due to his sense of urgency). He then told me that I needed to pay him $10.00 for valet parking. I said that I had just parked the vehicle myself and didn't see why I needed to pay him for a service not provided. He said he had stepped away and that those parking spots are reserved for valet company. I told him that there were not any signs indicating that I couldn't park there, nor did anything state that it was reserved for the valet company. I said that the meter took my money and I believe that I am parked legitimately. He was insistent that I pay. I didn't want to ruin the special night, so I paid him. I understand that sometimes people have to step away, but not sure why he didn't leave a sign saying "be right back". He appeared to be working by himself. Also, not sure why he thought the company was entitled to payment for valet services when he failed to provide any valet service. I am a business owner and I would never insist that someone pay for a service that I did not provide. I complained to the manager of the restaurant and he (Patrick) said it is a private company that the restaurant contracts with. He said please don't let this be a reflection on the restaurant. He said he was sorry for the experience. I questioned why his company would contract with a company of this caliber. He didn't have a good answer. He took my number and said he would speak with the company and then give me a call. So far I have not heard from him. Unfortunately this interaction with this company put a damper on our celebration.
