This is exactly my kind of place. Some down home rural country cooking with pork as far as the eye can see. Wide range of standard southern food options, drinks, and sides. The best deal on the menu is the sandwich with a side. We ordered three and then all agreed on the sides so we could try each others. The inside is very minimal, concrete floors, plaid table cloths..very southern classic restaurant. We had my nephew with us and they were very kid and family friendly. We went early but it was getting packed by the time we left so timing is critical. Lots of parking, friendly southern service, great clientele and people. Would absolutely go again if in this area. Portion sizes were good and price was great! They did mix up the sweet and unsweetened tea but nobody is perfect. check them out if you are up this way! read more

This is a critical review but I want to highlight the positive which is the good customer service which I will detail below . We literally came here due to the positive reviews we read on Yelp and other platforms . Dunno what these reviewers ate but my food was terrible . Pulled pork : it was dry . Appeared reheated . Did not taste fresh . The taste was akin to baked or roast pork . Based on the taste , it was not cooked on a pit or smoker . Green beans : tasted like it was dumped from a can with some sugar poured in it . Broccoli salad : too sweet . Again , tasted like sugar was the main ingredient ! Ribs : some of the worst ribs I've ever had . Tough , chewy and once again too sweet! The sauce was so sugary we jokingly called it candy ribs . However , bad food is no laughing matter! I asked the cashier if I could simply have a basic baked chicken and explained what I wrote above about the bbq. She obliged . The manager /owner was very receptive and proactive and immediately provided the baked chicken . He also brought new sides including their macaroni . I really appreciated the good customer service. Baked chicken : i was given two pieces . The marinade was delicious. The first bite was tender and my faith was renewed . However , it was short lived because the second piece was dry and overcooked . I was so disappointed in the lack of quality consistency. Macaroni : best thing I had there . Sauces . They had three : vinegar , ketchup and mustard basically . None of them were good . We drove 45 minutes out of the way to come here . Complete waste of time, money and calories . Boggles my mind how this place has so many positive reviews . Just know , everyone's palate is different. Some are more experienced in the bbq world than others . As someone who is very passionate about bbq and bbq culture , I simply cannot recommend this place . However , I did appreciate the good customer service. . read more

While googling recipes for chicken stew I came across a 2016 Cook's Country magazine article about Midway BBq's chicken stew. The more I read about it the more I decided that rather than make my own, I wanted to try theirs. So the next Saturday I hopped into my car and drove five hours from my home in Birmingham, AL to see if it was as good as the magazine said it was. Spoiler alert: it is. I ordered some stew and, because I'd never had it before (or even heard of it), some beef hash. I finished it off with some macaroni pie. The stew comes with a half sleeve of saltine crackers, which is a nice touch. After the first bite I saw why this stew deserved the write-up in the magazine. It is delicious. I took a few spoonsful just the way it came, then crumbled some crackers in it and added a bit of pepper, which is how my grandma served her chicken stew to me when I was a little boy. I'm glad I had a few crackers left because they came in handy when I got to the hash. I don't know if you're supposed to eat the hash with crackers or not. I tried it both ways. I We have good BBQ in Alabama. Heck, we have great barbecue in Alabama. But none of our bbq joints have anything like the chicken stew and "beef hash" on the menu. I don't know if other local eateries in SC have these items. Maybe y'all are used to it, but I sure wish the local bbq places here would add it to the menu--though I doubt it would be as good as Midway's. While I was eating the owner came over and said that as long as I drove 5 and half hours I ought to get more than stew and hash for my trouble. He dropped off some sweet potatoes and banana pudding at the table. Oh man! The sweet potatoes! The banana pudding was good, but I've had good banana pudding before. I've even had good sweet potatoes before but those sweet potatoes weren't good they were great. that yummy crunchy topping---wow. Before I left I bought three quarts of (frozen) stew and one quart of (frozen) hash to take back to Birmingham with me. I only wish I'd thought to bring some of those sweet potatoes, too. read more

Our eighth 'cue stop in South Carolina took us to one of the citadels of the state's rich barbecue history. Here you order and pick up at the counter. At 1:15 in the afternoon, the restaurant was very busy, doing an especially robust take-out trade. For $20, we received two trays-- beef hash with sides of cornbread, butter beans, mac 'n cheese and broccoli, and beef hash and pork with fried okra and mac 'n cheese. Two refillable iced teas and a banana pudding completed the order. The well seasoned pork doesn't need saucing, but goes well with both the vinegar and mustard sauces on the table. The beef hash is a South Carolina staple, and you really want to experience it here. We would skip the okra (overdone) and cornbread (very, very dry), but the broccoli, butter beans and mac 'n cheese were all first class. The banana pudding, which is on the sweet side, definitely requires a spoon! Still, it's a pleasant finish. read more

I spent so much time eating here for lunches. This place defined for me Southern bbq. My favorite sides among the veggie-based options: broccoli salad, slaw (though lots of mayo), broccoli casserole (broccoli with cheese), whole kernel corn, fried okra, steamed cabbage My favorite non-veggie options: sweet potato casserole (brown sugar caked on sweet potato), macaroni pie (essentially mac and cheese), banana pudding, chicken and dumplings, potatoes and gravy, french fries (funny that french fries is one of the healthier options), stewed potatoes Best meat options: ribs, bbq pork (pork is v salty without the sauce which is thick and sweet). Try not to come here at noon as it's absolutely packed. Come here at 11am or 1 pm and the line is so much more manageable. They also serve a variety of meat cuts. Ok, so I normally enjoy hole in the wall places. This is one even though they've been around since the 40's. That must mean something, right? Well, yeah it does. It means unfortunately that they have an older and local crowd following that doesn't, in reality, mean much. Why do I say that? Local places can be worth visiting after all. 1) Average BBQ does not make good BBQ. This places only has average, ok BBQ. Nothing more. In fact, they are known for their "hash" and chicken stew, but certainly not their BBQ. They have very little in the way of bbq actually. Pulled pork and chopped chicken is about it. The flavors are overridden by pepper and little else. 2) Ok, maybe what they are known for is worth it. Unfortunately, no. Not to be tmi, but there's something wrong when everything goes straight through in about an hour. Again, the "hash" was overpowered by pepper and very little seasoning otherwise. The chicken stew resembled something that came from my rain barrel. Extremely soupy with very little actual substance to it. Now a good chicken soup can be very good! This wasn't a soup though. It was supposed to be a stew. 3) Menu names gives the first hint of what is on the menu. Sadly I'm not sure what their version of some of these things are! They are not a BBQ restaurant even though it's in their name. The "hash" on their menu and what they are known for, is not hash. At least not the normal meaning of that word. Closer to a northern version of slow cooker chicken, except with beef...I think. The "stew" as mentioned before is closer to soup, and sad soup at that. 3) Maybe the customer service made the experience worth it, but nope. Each of the four people on the counter had either frowns or dead expressions. There was no energy, enthusiasm, or even baseline professionalism in evidence. Not a single person up there wanted it be there and made sure every customer knew it. Now, sure. I'm critical since being in the hospitality industry for a long time. Maybe not every place needs to fulfill my expectations as such, but I expect some redeeming features on a visit, not missing some basic industry standards. read more

Stopped by at Midway BBQ for lunch while in town for business. The locals recommended that this was the place to go for visitors. They were not wrong. We walked in here around noon and the place was slammed (a good sign). Luckily, we got in at the right time window and the line started to build up 30 seconds after ordering. The service here was outstanding. Southern hospitality, but even better. To say that the people working here are nice would be an understatement! I ordered the Pulled Pork, with sides of steamed cabbage, macaroni pie, broccoli casserole, and cornbread. All of this cost under $8 with a drink! The food was served on one of those foam plates with pockets like I would get back in the day during grade school. The food was was ready within 5-7 minutes and was amazing. The pork was cooked to the right temperature and consistency. The steamed cabbage (which I got to have one somewhat healthy option) was delicious. The broccoli casserole was fantastic, but the star of the show was the macaroni pie. I don't know how many types of cheese this thing had in it, but all I know is that every time I lifted the fork in the air after grabbing some, there were no dreaded cheese drips. This was an eventful and enjoyable lunch. Was in town on business and our hosts took us here for lunch. Everyone was pleased. The only complaint was from a person who ordered the pizza and I guess it was really bad! I ordered the pulled pork, vinegar slaw and a baked potato. The meat was good and moist, the vinegar slaw was amazing! The thing that caught us all by surprise and kind of scared some of us because we had no idea what was going on was the national anthem being played at around noon.
