I have not been to Midtiwn Boomers since it used to be a full bar with DJ/ dance floor with a pole! Lol Came here Canada Day after the Tattoo for lunch- they were busy but the staff was great and accommodating! My son enjoyed his grilled cheese with bacon n fries and I asked the waitress as busy as you are can I still order the turkey dinner- she happily obliged and we were the next people up to order so it came quick- I requested fries/ mashed combo as it was eirther or but I was allowed as I had one scoop potatoes instead of 2- It came with veggies but I was able to get coleslaw no extra charge as I don't eat peas lol The only thing I'd say was the stuffing was a bit hard, the turkey was like shredded not shaved but you know what- it was still real turkey white/ dark meat and delicious- gravy good, fries good, had package cranberry sauce but most do and I enjoyed! I'd definitely get again just request sifter stuffing! read more

Just located down the street from its original location which I just drove past and see it torn down. Sad sight to see that landmark gone. Well at least it is still around. Going to Midtown with the BF was something that he really enjoyed so much he took me there for my 40th, UP! Normally when we go he always get the steak and fries with loads of mushrooms and onions oh and don't forget the coleslaw. Me I like the fish and chips but have been known to have the steak everyone once inawile. Oh and the best is the draft, what a way to wash it down. Midtown is a spot that many go to enjoy after balls games as they are known to support the teams. TV line the walls and always have sports playing for the boys. After the tragic closing of the Pogue, it took a little while for trivia to find a new home. Then it finally settled here, at Midtown (which is also apparently Boomers but I honestly do not get that logic). It's a little rundown, a little beat-up, but this place has got heart, you know? The staff is super close, and they're helpful beyond words. The food is nothing to get super excited about, but the menu lists prices with tax included, and they have a three dollar grilled cheese that is everything you want it to be when it's late at night and you just need something to take the edge off your stomach. It's a good, honest place. They have regulars for a reason. There's history here. Also, a pretty swell grilled cheese. read more

I haven't been one of the dedicated fans of the Midtown, but after the Pogue closed down and its Tuesday trivia night relocated to the Midtown, I've made my way here several times now. Valued for its laid back atmosphere, and comfort food at reasonable prices, the Midtown has been a blue collar institution in Halifax for decades, only moving to its current location that it shares with Boomers in the past few years. The new location is bigger and brighter than the old one, both of which are improvements in my opinion as dark and dank isn't the best sort of ambiance in my opinion. Looking for a bite to eat after a long day at work, I was tempted by their special of the day, the meatloaf, but given that it was 9pm I thought it best that I get something that would be cooked to order rather than getting a dried out end of meatloaf. I settled on a burger and fries, plus an order of fried pepperoni to share with my trivia compatriots. It generally isn't a packed house on a Tuesday night, so the food came pretty quickly. This isn't any sort of fancypants burger like the sort that you'll see at any of Halifax's new burger joints, this is a humble burger that tastes just like one you'd make at home. Thicker than I had expected it to be and just a little on the dry side of the moisture spectrum, this is still an enjoyable burger, with mustard, relish and sauteed onions to add to the flavour. A pile of your typical frozen diner fries accompanied the burger, but they're crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, so that's a win in my books. The order of fried pepperoni is heaped onto a plate of its own and made for a great app to share, with a great bang for your buck. I wasn't blown away by any of the food, but what I've had recently is simple, well executed grub at a price that leaves you plenty of cash to spend on the beer. read more

I'd give here a 2.5 more so than a 3 from today's lunch at noon on a chilly, overcast Wednesday in April. The place was about half full with seating of approximately 100 I would say. Very basic 'tavern' with wooden tables, one square room, bar off to the side, fair bit of natural lighting coming in from Grafton St. Prompt service. The daily special was a hot turkey dinner which my friend ordered and he gives a 2 or 2.5/5 because the fries were frozen, vegetables seemed out of a can, the gravy had almost no taste. Large meat portion and good stuffing though. My fish & chips were about the same, not terrible, but a bit more batter than I like, okay cole slaw. I'd come back here and try something else, but there's nothing great about it. read more

WOW this place is awesome. I was in town for a conference and a friend of mind recommended we head here for lunch he said they have a great steak. Upon entering it didn't strike me as a place to get a good steak, but I'm not one to judge until the food is in ma belly. The service was amazing, he came to our table very friendly and took our drink order, then meal order. All three of us actually ordered the steak and fries for $14, yeah you heard me right $14 for a steak dinner. Well in my mind seeing how cheap the steak was, I wasn't expecting much. Within minutes all our plates came out and the steak was huge, and so tender you could cut it with a butter knife, and the fries and coleslaw were really good as well. Now if you are in a bit of a hurry, don't fret because the service is like greased lightning and everything was perfect. I've eaten many a steak in my day, and honestly for the price, this was right up there with some of the other boys who charge triple the price this place does. Go try it out and I can guarantee you will not be disappointed. read more

This place is hilarious. They serve food during the day and at some point move tables around and it turns into a dance club at night. If your sole purpose is to bust some moves on the dance floor and you don't care about atmosphere, then you've hit the jackpot. The playlist is decent - newish dance music mixed with some hip hop classics. I've never eaten here, so I can make no comments on the food, but I have drank their cheap drinks and danced among the college kids on more than one occasion over the past couple of years and have always enjoyed myself. Halifax lacks a dance scene for people my own age, so if you really want to dance, you just have to put your game face on and look past the teenyboppers. This past time, I've felt my age more than ever before. A young girl - couldn't have been a day over 19 bumps into me, smiles and says to me and my small group of friends, all between 30-40, "Ahhhh are you guys out for a special occasion or something?" Like us "old folk" must be celebrating one of our 50th birthdays, because at our age you must have a good reason to go out and party. We all had a good chuckle. Little did she know, moments later I would break out some of my best moves and show those youngins how we used to do it in the early 2000s, putting them all to shame. The name kind of sums up the experience as a nightclub. It's not fancy, you'll see at least one group of pub crawls here, and might feel like you've accidentally wandered into a high school dance. But, with a limited options for dancing it's cheap, there's room on the dance floor to break it down and I like the music much better than what they play at the Dome or Cheers. read more

No pens, no pads and no mistakes! This is a place with better service, better food, and a better atmosphere than almost anywhere else in the city. It's been around since 1949 and there's a reason the same customers keep coming back week after week as well as gaining new clientele. The staff don't write anything down when you place your order and they never make a mistake. When you ask for your bill it's all in their head. Everything on the menu is listed with tax and is always in multiples of 25 cents for easy cash payments and tips (and they certainly deserve the tips). There are daily specials including home-style foods like meatloaf, roast turkey dinner and a boiled dinner. If you want some pub food that's not a problem either, homemade hamburgers, wings, seafood, fries, ribs, even pizza. This place has it all. Many might have been worried about the move from their old location down the road where they had been for 50 years. However, if anything, this place is better than ever and they didn't lose a bit of their history by moving. It's still always busy, especially before a Mooseheads game or when the Leafs are on one of their new '46 flat screens. All the old furniture was brought to the new location when they moved up the road in August of '09. So when you walk in, despite the face-lift, you feel like you're walking into the same tavern that's been there for 50+ years. Not to mention a framed goodbye photograph of the old location which takes up a good portion of the back wall and is signed by hundreds of loyal customers. It's things like this that keep our server Lou working there for so long (25 years on October 22nd of this year) and customers coming back. I've gone to the Midtown Tavern many, many times over the years, and it's not just the deep friend pepperoni that keeps me coming back for more. This little bar used to be a gentleman's only eatery, located just down the street from its new and current location. I remember thinking when I was younger that the original shop reminded me of something out of The Barenaked Ladies song "Hello City", it was a the best representation of a locally owned and widely acclaimed that our fair city had to offer. Only a little charm was lost in the move to the larger facility (and there is now a significantly better route to get to the girls restroom). The Midtown serves a wide variety of your favourite pub foods for cheap, and the servers are (as they've always been) experts at customer service. As a five year old I was amazed that the servers could remember an order for a whole table at once without writing anything down. Now I can marvel that when my uncles eat here every time they visit from out of town, they are recognized and can even use the phrase "the usual, please." Hot Hint: This is a great place to catch a hockey (or any other sports) game. Appetizers and draft beer are fairly priced in comparison to other sports bars in the city read more

Midtown Tavern has its news location ( which is just down the street from the original ). This is the place to go for a steak and beer. The menu is tavern food ,but they do it a little better here. Everyone around town knows of the midtown. The food is always good and the staff handles the crowd. I can remember going into the old Midtown and there was not a seat in the house. read more

I'm told it's moved down the road somewhere, not sure where. __ This tavern is a Halifax institution, and has been operating for decades. It's a simple sports bar, a place where the woman's bathroom was an afterthought (they have to go through the kitchen and upstairs to find toilets). It's just one big room with lots of close-packed wooden tables and chairs, and a whole bunch of guys slinging beer and serving steaks. These aren't great steaks, either. The Midtown doesn't pretend to be something it's not. For about $9 you get a rib steak, fries, coleslaw, and a smothering of gravy. It's huge, it's cheap, and it is comfort food. Or maybe you want a burger, or some fried pepperoni pieces. In any case, wash it all down some draught beer while you watch the hockey game (or the boxing or the football) on the TV. A place for good ol' boys who want to fill up on meat and beer. I love it. read more

Meh, it's an old style pub that hasn't changed since it's inceptions (except locations of course). The new space is nice, very open with large tvs and they cater to the customers tastes. The menu is pretty standard diner food. Portions large, but quality pretty low. Caesar salad comes drenched and with mozza on the top. Pepperoni is good- and large. Steak is watery and looks old. Frozen fries. Staff are fantastic though and I think it appeals to the senior crowd. I would skip this one. read more

Every time I have gone to Midtown, the waiters have been consistently rude. My partner and I sat down at a table and the waiter didn't even say hi before demanding ID. When my partner joked, he was promptly snapped at about liquor laws. The steak was mediocre, the onions were burnt and the fries weren't worth finishing. After a previous bad experience here, I do not see myself returning again. read more

Absolutely the most disgusting steak I've ever had it my life. Barely recognizable as red meat. Ordered rare this chewy, stringy piece of trash was a light brown/ greyish colour, and clearly had any desirable texture pounded out of it with a 'tenderizer' mallet. Thank God they had at least one good beer (Propeller ESB) to wash it down with, but yet I was still unable to finish... The fries were clearly frozen Mccains thrown into a deep fryer, and were pretty much void of any taste without loading them with salt and ketchup. Out of all the great places to eat in Halifax, this is definitely one to avoid. And steak aficionados-- ALWAYS be weary of a supposed 'top sirloin' priced at 14$ with a side. read more

Used to frequent the original Midtown Tavern many many years ago and looked forward to a revisit ... disappointed ... fish and chips less appealing than the frozen food I buy at my local supermarket. The newer incarnation of the Midtown has little to no character and the only hints to its earlier self are the 'prints' management i selling of the original building long since torn down. I have visited Midtown several times. Usually very great service and very good food. On May 29th, however, I was very disappointed when I informed the 'waiter' I had a shellfish allergy, and he immediately said 'I can't guarantee anything'. I always inform waiters of my allergy and this is the first time at your establishment that I've been told that there was a concern. I ordered nachos, which seemed like a fairly safe dish so I was not concerned nor expecting that type of response, in the manner it was given. Certainly I did not feel comfortable eating at your establishment after a comment like that - are you concerned that your wait staff has no confidence in your kitchen staff? Or is there something going on in the kitchen that frozen scallops are contaminating everything? The only shellfish I saw on your menu were scallops and it surprised me that he wouldn't even go to the kitchen to ask if it was possible to make me nachos without contaminating them with scallops. Are they a new item? I was with a group of people so I stayed while they ate. I enjoyed my visit to your restaurant, because of the people I was with, but I will not be visiting your establishment in the future. read more

I hadn't been to the Midtown in years because there food is still in the 1970's and very, very basic. I was at the world curling championships and thought I would drop I for a beer. There were 4 people there at 4 pm. I decided to stay and have a beer at the bar ......no one to talk to so I decided to pay up and go to a more popular place. When presented with my bill I put payment plus 10% tip on the bar plus another 15% in nickels and dimes explaining I was trying to get some change out of my pocket. She told me they don't take anything less than quarters and so I scooped up my change and left. Thinking as I went to the next place the Midtown keeps getting worse when they won't even take your tips unless they are at least quarters. Very minor item I guess but I was slightly embarrassed. I have asked at every place I have been to since and everyone still takes nickels and dimes! Image wondered if she would have had to call the manager if that was all I had??? read more

Recommended by a good friend here in Calgary, a Halifax native whose Dad was a long time Chronicle Herald employee and patron of the Midtown in the old location. he said they are going to knock it down soon so you have to go and ...have the steak. We managed to get in a couple of trips to the Midtown in the legacy location and fell in love with it, being a lot like some of the old prairie beer parlours of our youth. We checked out the steak, fries and some icy cold Keiths and we were sold. This is a panfried steak like Mom used to make. It recalls the platter sized chicken fried steaks in cattle country without the chicken fried part. Not a yupster, hipster haven but they would be welcome, not sure I would want to make trouble in there as you might get a 27 point tune-up. Just a spot for regular folks to have a cold one and a solid lunch. Plain hearty fare brought to you by folks who seem like your cousins after an hour or so. We have been in the new place twice on trips to Halifax and it has the same feel albeit in a new building. The ghosts are still there and so will we be next summer when we visit again. read more
