We came last night for the swing lesson (4 of us). It was SUPER crowded. Instructors were good, charismatic, etc. But it was really hard to practice the moves because we kept getting interrupted by other people (including a couple who came over and literally shoved us out of our space!). Would be much better if they limited admission (ie, buy tickets in advance, and charge MORE!). Also, there isn't much nearby that's open after 9pm. So if you wanna drink or a bite to eat after all that dancing, be ready to drive! ETA: Isn't it funny, after zero reviews for years, once I post my less than savory review, a week later they get another 5 stars by an eliter? LOL read more

My boyfriend and I LOVE it here! We really enjoy coming early on Fridays for the class and staying until our feet hurt. We smile and laugh all night! Everyone is so kind! The team that works here and the other dancers. We've been absolutely impressed with every interaction we have with an employee. Such a friendly crowd, employees, and instructors. I've been in and out of the Sacramento swing (dance) scene for a while now. After my latest hiatus, I was pleased to find that Midtown Stomp had surfaced practically in my own backyard. It's at the Eastern Star Ballroom (sounds exotic, no??), across the street from Sutter's Fort on Friday nights. Classes at various levels (including beginning) lead up to a general dance at 9 p.m. They have live bands ~ once a month. I've been taking lessons with Matt and Kara, and they're great - although there seems to be a lot of talent on the staff, so I imagine most of the classes are of pretty good quality. My only complaint about Midtown Stomp is the same one I have about every dance venue I've ever been to anywhere - there's never enough ventilation. Especially in the summer. But that's just my pet peeve, and to be fair, I don't think there's a lot to be done aside from strategic fan placement. Anyway, go check it out, have fun, learn something. You don't need a partner...in fact most people go as singles. You can sign up for classes (series start on the first Friday of each month) on their website or at the door. read more

Peter Petty and his Titans of Terpsichore... say what?! Our group of friends visited on a Friday night for east coast swing lessons followed by open floor dancing with this live jazz band! Very comfortable atmosphere, despite the body heat - fans on blast, doors wide open, and limited seating. Everyone was still so friendly and outgoing. I was really surprised to see an even amount of ladies and gentlemen in attendance! All ages are welcome and you can buy discounted tickets online or packages through Groupon. I think refreshments are available for purchase and the attire can be casual/dressy. Don't use your GPS for directions, it's located in an industrial area and you'll have to enter into the parking lot to find a small folded sign. This was a wonderful experience and we hope to come back for more live music soon! read more

This place is a hidden secret. It needs way more publicity because it is simply awesome. I came here two weeks ago with my two other friends (we all went single, so no worries!) during their Friday night dances. The first hour was a fun dance class in the ballroom, and there were about 150 people. The guys rotated and everyone got their basic moves down. Next comes the dancing! Everybody was very friendly, the music was fantastic, and the mood was very relaxed and fun. You can grab some cheap snacks when youre' tired ($.25 "ghetto" popsicles, anyone??). There is really nothing pretentious about this place. Go alone, go with your friends, just be prepared to have fun. The crowd here does draw college folk, but that's only about 1/3 of the people. The rest are from their late 20's to their 50's, so don't let that worry you at all. The actual location is hard to find, the Eastern Star Ballroom actually looks just like any other building. But the website can help you out a lot. Parking is also cheap, and for $6 you're ready to have a great night out. read more

The midtown stomp is a casual swing dancing venue with live bands every other week. It only operates on Friday nights. You entry fee comes with a free hour long lesson starting at 8pm. The instructors, while cheesy, are very good and if you pay attention and give it a chance you will learn the basics easily! The crowd here ranges from 15 year olds to 80 years olds all looking for some clean wholesome fun. There is no alcohol served at the midtown stomp and in all honesty it is one of my favorite things about it! I hate that every activity you do nowadays has "getting wasted" built in to ensure that you have a good time! You will have an amazing time at the midtown stomp without having one drink! It is just hands down a fun environment! The crowd is relaxed and laid back! Anyone will say yes to dancing with you whether they are bad or good so don't be afraid to ask! The talent that they bring in on the live music night is definitely worth mention too! I have seen some of the most amazing musicians preform here! The nights that there is not live music the events are DJd. Again the music selection is exceptional. This place lots of upbeat music. Great for the 20-35 year old crowd but all are welcome. I am a beginning-intermediate swing dancer and I could NOT keep up here. It is def for the more advanced dancers. I have danced comfortably multi times at the USS Hornet in Alameda but the expertise of Midtown Stomp dancers far pass the level of those on the Hornet. I did not take the beginning instruction prior to the dance but that's bc I know the basics but wow, these guys are great! If anything just stop by and watch to learn a few things. Everyone was friendly there and they accept all. During the Jack and JIll, there were all sorts of combos of Jack and Jill; Jill and JIll; Jack and Jack; Jack, Jack and Jill and ALL were very happy and accepted. The parking lot is dark and spread out btwn alleyways so as a female coming here alone, I prob wouldn't unless I came early to get a spot up close or it's still day light. read more

A friend and I came here last night for the Todd Morgan and the Emblems show. We arrived at 9 so I can't comment on the dance lessons but just the dancing. At first we felt like we were at a high school dance. Everyone was really young and no one was asking anyone to dance. Eventually the place started to fill up and we moved away from the 17 year old crowd and more towards the 25+ side. The crowd was great and the guys were very accommodating to my rusty swing skills. The music was fantastic. These guys and gal are great and deserve a listen! The location: I love the Eastern Star building. It is like you are blinked back in time when you step through the doors. The parking here is... well it's midtown, so it sucks! and walking 2 blocks in the rain is no fun! So pray you have good parking karma! Overall this is a great spot and I can't wait to spend some more time dancin the night away. read more

Going dancing is a love/hate relationship for me. While I love to get my groove on, I hate the way it reminds me of how little coordination I have. That's why this place is awesome! If you come early at 8pm, there's one hour of free lessons included with your entrance ($12 when we came). After 9pm, there's a live band & and open dance floor until midnight or so. The lessons are just ok, there's a huge group of people standing around the gymnasium like room & just one couple demonstrating moves. You couldn't see too well & didn't have much room to practice, so I don't think I learned too much. But as the night went on, I think I slowly got the hang of it & it was pretty fun. The band was great & people watching was the best! There are so many talented swing dancers out there! Come just to watch if anything - there's nothing wrong with being a wallflower! After a fews hours I felt like I was at a high school dance. There were so many younger girls dressed up all cute & gossiping in the bathroom. The room did get really hot so bring some cash to buy some water & snacks in the lobby! read more

As far as I'm concerned Midtown Stomp is the BEST place to go swing dancing on a Friday night in Sacramento. Everyone there seems so nice and it's a very casual atmosphere. They offer a lesson for beginners which is perfect for me. The acoustics of the space are a bit on the echoey side but the music levels are comfortable so you don't need earplugs. In the summer this place can get HOT so be prepared to sweat. My friends have made Midtown Stomp a Friday tradition this Summer and will continue to dance there frequently. If you're new to Swing or if you've been dancing for awhile I think you'll really like this place. read more

As Jennifer mentioned, the beginning of the dance brought me straight back to sophomore/ junior years of high school (which I really do not want to relive), but after we moved it was nice to dance with people our age. Yay!!! Swing Dancing!!! I really enjoyed my experience here. The instructors were funny and very patient with the class. I am not a novice to swing, but had been a long time so I appreciated how slowly they went through the steps. I came on a Friday night and used a Living Social deal, so I'm not sure what the regular cost is. The lesson was from 8-9 and open dancing started after that. I left around 10:30 and the place was still hopping. There was a snack bar that sold candy, ice cream, sodas and most importantly water! Once the dance started I was amazed at how friendly everyone was. Even those who came with a partner took time to dance with people who came alone. People were having fun. It didn't feel snooty - beginners were given the same respect as the more experienced dancers. The building was very unique. It is an historic building with a large dance floor and stage upstairs. Unfortunately, no air conditioning, though. :( I can't wait to come back and see a band play! Most of the people are generally mid-town hip - wearing 40s style clothing. Great people watching opportunity! Most of the girls wore dresses and guys wore slacks, but I get the feeling that anything goes. read more

I wish they taught some different kinds of dances here, but of course, it just seems like swing so far. It seems to draw a younger crowd (college freshman?) because it's such a high-energy dance. The dance lesson and admission is 6.00 on friday night, so that's gotta be a good thing. It gets u a nifty little bracelet (so they know u paid). The ballroom? Well, it's quite big and the oooold men's bathroom is real small for the huge number of people that come out "hurrrr." Oh, and there's snacks being sold in the lobby. But...if you get REAL hungry, you could probably stop by the blimpies around the corner. It was HOT with like 100 something people and LOUD when I went. So, you pretty much don't get much good conversation time with anyone. Even in the quieter lobby area...its quite hard to converse to anyone. Parking? Well, it was pretty good. Just park in the hospital garage like it says on their website and usually there's no one in the security booth after 11pm, so you get free parking! woohoo! otherwise, it's 50 cents an hour. read more

First off, swing dancing is wonderful! It is pretty much the only way I like to exercise. :) Swing dancing can go from the most basic steps that a beginner can pick up their first time (especially with the free beginning swing lesson you get with your admission), to the more complicated lindy hop that is intricate enough that you can dance it for years and never get bored with it. Midtown Stomp is the most happening place to swing dance in Sacramento. Their ballroom is HUGE, they offer a wide variety of classes, and they have both DJ and live music. I always recommend this place to my friends who want to learn to dance. People from all ages go, and you don't have to have a partner. SO much fun! I like midtown, I am there almost every week. However, I do wish that they would play more mainstream swing music. More Elvis, more Brian Setzer, Cherry Poppin Daddies, etc etc. The DJ'ing is good as long as Scottie is the DJ, if it's not him don't bother wasting your time asking for a song to be played if you're a guy. If you are going and it's your first time make sure you go to the free lesson at 8pm. Also, if you're going as a couple ROTATE. I understand that couples want to dance together but, you will learn a lot faster if you rotate and dance with other partners. read more

One of my favorite friday night spots! It's cheaper than going to the movies, and (as long as you're willing to dance) it's a blast! They have beginner lessons before the dancing starts. I've watched the crowds grow bigger and bigger each year, which is amazingly cool, but because the building isnt airconditioned the crowds tend to bring with them a sweaty, gross, "get the hell away from me" sorta feeling. Other than the cramped conditions and the heat, its worth every penny and is so much fun! SUGGESTION!: be willing to ask people to dance and don't turn anyone down. It's amazing the kinds of friends you will meet, and suprisingly some of the gross looking old guys are the most fun to dance with. Last night was my first time ever trying swing dance. It was solo much fun :D in the beginning we had a lesson, which helped later in the night when we had free dance with the live band. You have to step out of your comfort zone to go and ask people to dance with you sometimes, but everyone is so friendly it makes it easy. I had a lot of people ask me to dance and I asked a lot of people to dance and no body said no. Same with my friends. There are a lot dancers of all different skill levels so have no fear of trying something new. There is a small snack bar that sells water and snack like food. As for attire: Guys can wear pretty much anything but nothing too heavy because it gets hot in there. I reccomend bring a small towel if you sweat a lot. Girls same advice as the guys pretty much anything but nothing too heavy. If you choose to wear a dress nothing super short. (I wore a knee length summer dress that didn't show too much clevage. Under the dress I work spandex Bermuda shorts. You don't have to wear shorts but I am just over cautious.) as for shoes nothing with super high heals, or with super grippy rubber bottoms(your feet may stick to the floor when uoi spin) I wore jazz shoes but my friends wore flats and converse which also works they didn't complain. Fun place to go with a large dance floor.

For years my husband and I wanted to know how to swing dance and it took my son and his friends to light a fire under us to go. THE VENUE was like stepping back in time... Eastern Star Ballroom is the epitome of the era! Every nook n cranny had a story. I truly hope that whomever decides to renovate this place takes a lesson from those who renovated the Del Mar Theater in d/t Santa Cruz... This place is definitely a treasure. Spacious and awesome locale. Keeping in mind the age of the building, there is no air conditioning. They have plenty of industrial fans, though, to keep the dancers as cool as they can. THE STAFF was VERY helpful. Our instructors were patient and well versed in the art of dance. Though I had personal issues with two left feet and was on the verge of tears for not moving as swiftly as them, that does not fall on the instruction. After the lesson was over the lights went out and the dance hall was open to seasoned dancers for a night of fun. Staff went beyond the lesson and helped those out who needed it after the official lesson. We will be back!! read more

Where you'll find me on Friday nights! It's always full of fun here. And dance partners who you become friends with. There are not many social events where you can feel comfortable going alone but Midtown Stomp is an exception. They offer group lessons (basic East Coast and Lindy Hop) in which you can meet half of the participants already. And then during the dance session from 9pm - 12am, line dancing and dance circles happen in intervals. On DJ nights, the music ranges from traditional to electro and at any pace. As a long-time swing dancer, I can say that this place is great for beginners... but that's about it really. Speaking only from past experiences (**things might have changed since I moved away**) their classes are not very high quality, nor do they really try to inspire or motivate people to really learn lindy hop or get better at it; they simply teach basics of east coast swing and people think that's a dance form of its own (when in reality it was borne out of lindy hop and is the dance that should be used as an intro to lindy). Because of this, there is a high turnover rate at this venue, and not a lot of people stick around for very long. It is sad for me to come back and visit because most of my friends who used to go all the time have gotten bored with it and moved onto something else. Either that, or they have joined cliques that are snobby and don't want to dance with anyone but the people in their little clique. Not to mention that when I do visit (since I moved to San Francisco), I am not welcomed warmly with an out-of-towner jam; instead I am yelled at, telling me that "San Francisco doesn't count as out of town." Since when are Sacramento and San Francisco synonymous? Way to make me feel welcomed back, guys. I will say that the ballroom itself is beautiful and HUGE. The floor is great for dancing, and the sound is normally very nice. The music is usually okay, though they tend to play a lot of the same songs every single week, and they have live bands quite often (which makes the price higher on those weeks). As prices rise at this venue and less and less people stick around, it doesn't make it feel worth it to go back here for a good night of lindy when I'm visiting Sacramento. However, if you're a beginner and you're looking to have some fun, this will be the place for you. This venue is very highly populated by the young college crowd, and it is a great way to meet new people, if that's what you're looking for. read more

I absolutely love Midtown Stomp Swing Dancing. It is the perfect place to spend your Friday evenings. The beautiful ballroom takes you back in time to the Lindy Hop era. You get a rush of joy just by walking into the building.. And dancing for three hours at this place is just magical. Midtown Stomp is the place that got me started with Swing Dancing. This place is very family friendly so you can bring your family and large groups are always welcome. The 6,000 square feet of space fills up quickly with the amount of people coming every week so a dance partner is not a necessity. It is not a problem if you do not know how to swing dance because they offer a variety of classes for people with all kinds of dance experience. If you are new to swing dancing, Midtown Stomp offers a beginning East Coast Swing class with the price of admission. They also have multiple series classes that vary every month. They offer everything from Beginning Lindy Hop, to Charleston, to Lindy Hop Challenges, to Balboa. The instructors that teach these classes are very experienced and make sure that you leave the class understanding the dance style you chose to learn. Midtown Stomp also offers private lessons. One of my favorite things about Midtown Stomp is the Birthday Jam that they have halfway through the night. The Birthday Jam is a dance for anyone who has a birthday that week. Everyone gets into a large circle and all of the birthday people get in the middle, and someone from the circle grabs them to dance with them. They start to dance to the music and then other people "steal" that birthday person to dance with them too. By the time the song is done, the birthday person gets on average about 7-9 dances. Its a great thing Midtown Stomp does to wish the birthday people a Happy Birthday. But the birthday wishes don't stop there... If you are planning on having your birthday at Midtown Stomp, you just send them an email letting them know that it is your birthday and you get in for free. You can also have a guest list of up to 20 people who get $2 off admission on the night of your birthday party. Table reservations are available. The killer is the crowd--lots of creepy older men, which I guess is to be expected for ballroom-type dancing, but it made it hard to be comfortable while learning. $12 on Friday for lesson and dance, which is fine if you love swing, but as a first-timer it wasn't an enticing price at all. read more

I love Midtown Stomp! I've been going for years and it just keeps getting better! Its a great night out for not a lot of money. You get a great night of dancing to either one of their awesome djs or a live band. They do an hour lesson every week so no previous experience is needed. There are people of all ages and skill levels there so there is always someone to dance with. And because its a social dance no partners are required. They also offer supplemental classes for those who want to learn more than what they teach in the beginning lessons all the way to the advanced level. So there is something for everyone in their lessons as well. The location is amazing with a huge ballroom dance floor! Plenty of room to dance and also space for you to sit and watch or relax between dances. Its a great venue full of amazing people! The perfect way to spend your Friday night. read more

Midtown is a REALLY fun place to go swing dancing!!! Fun music always keeps your toe tapping even if you aren't dancing. All the good dancers are up front by the stage, and if you ask any of them to show you some moves, they won't refuse. Even if you don't have a date or friends to dance with, someone will always ask you! The ration of guys to girls isn't too bad. There is a lesson before the dance floor opens, and they close at midnight!
