Amazing. After a fun-filled night of drinking and eating, on our way back to our car we came across the most curious of sights. A mysterious van that magically wasn't there moments ago between the time we parked our car and went on our fantastic journey into the midtown bar scene. To be honest, at first sight the Acoustic Sanctuary is intimidating... something straight out of a Disney film, Wizard of Oz, or Dr. Who. But once you walk through the curtain, you're greeted by an amazing sight of wall to wall instruments, and purple. It's a great place with friends, going alone may be awkward, and it's an amazing way to end a date in midtown, or in our case (completely sobering up before driving home). The host is friendly, he's extremely talented and has a way of keeping the mood light and has a way of leaving a smile on your face. I would totally recommend.

Catch Winko Ljizz Thurs-Saturday nights at the corner of 22nd and J Streets in midtown Sacramento. His style, personality, and character are that of purely a gentleman. I've been here many a time when folks from all over come stumbling in after a night of food and libations. They're usually curious about what goes on inside this large purple van and they find out right quick, if you're the last one in you've got to pick a topic - not related to anything you see inside or music. For instance, one day I picked "sustainability" for a topic and Winko spent a good 15 minutes stalling until someone else came in because I had thrown him a curve ball. It's okay, he offered me a beer and played the newcomer's request quite well (happiness was the topic). Anyways, if you're ever in the area and the least bit curious - pop on in and say hi. You won't regret it!

Drove past this van that had a neon sign and circled the block. Felt like it was some sort of magical entry into another world. Walked up the stairs through a curtain and there was a man behind a piano. We sit and had great conversation, paid our low fee of $15 and the fun began. Spent the evening with songs of mythical creatures, storytelling and predictions around the worlds insanity. More people joined in the five seat theater. People popped their heads in asking what is this...we were getting such a unique experience. A great time had by all and your ticket is good all night!

November 2013: Jo Koy December 2014: Jo Koy January 2017: Finesse Mitchell May 2026: JR De Guzman General Admission for the earlier Friday 5/15 show (7PM) tickets were ~$43 each, and Judi and I were seated to the left side of the main room with one four-seater table separating us and the stage. We were at the performers' 3 o'clock; I will say the angle of spotlighting in our eyes took some getting used to but did not deter. Not sure how far back the comedians could actually see our faces with/without the spotlight. Opening acts were Jimmy Earll (@jimmyearll) and Diego Curiel (@awkwarddiego). Diego had me cracking UP! JR had a good set, with the crowd participation, improv with the acoustic guitar, and he even brought his dad up onstage toward the end! 2 drink minimum; the server let us each get 1 drink and 1 food item instead. I got nonalcoholic drink The Bell Ringer (spirit-free whiskey, strawberry, ginger, fresh lemon, bitters), and we shared the buffalo mac & cheese and pretzels with cheese. Also received a pair of complimentary tickets to the 5/21 show of Dressed To Kill.

Ticketmaster charges suck, I get it. 2 tickets were $65 or so. I acknowledge 2 drink minimum, expected pricey drinks. So lets get that out of the way first. Emails from the venue said doors open 30 min prior, show was supposed to start at 9:15pm. We were about 4th or 5th in line at 8:40pm. We waited in line until after 9:30 because they were selling merch inside the showroom from the 1st show, so they werent letting guests in. Didn't get seated until 9:45! Why wouldn't merch be sold on the way out in the hallway? Drink service was slow, and you couldn't get your own drinks at the bar!!! You HAD to wait to buy from your server. 2 drink min shouldn't matter bar or server! Drinks were over $20/ea FFS. 4 vodka + red bulls, not doubles, not top shelf vodka. Amost $90 with tip. Wtf!!! That's Vegas prices!!! The opening act was awful, not funny at all. The MC was the 2nd act, and he was just flat and seemed like he was onstage forever, maybe 25-30 min? The headliner didn't start after 10:30, and we were still waiting to get our 2nd drink! They boast major acts, how does a small, shitty strip mall club run this poorly?

Took her to see Saul Trujillo and he killed his set! All the staff here were extremely gracious. We had an absolute blast watching the comedians perform in the show room. I always assumed the theatre was just the stage you see driving by. To my shock there was a whole other room filled with a larger stage and tons of tables and chairs. Sound was immaculate as the comics were coming in loud and clear. The pretzel here was bomb! Their cheese spicy too. I would definitely order that again. Drinks came out quick. Although you're pretty close to other tables it never feels uncomfortable. Clean bathrooms and overall venue too. I love the location of this comedy venue being in the heart of Old Sacramento. Service was impressively quick--just two staff members were handling the entire room, and our food and drinks came out fast. The food itself was okay; we ordered the chicken ranch wrap and the chocolate cake. However, the two featured cocktails we tried were pretty disappointing--basically sugary syrup in a glass. The comedy, though, made up for it. The first comedian gave us some solid laughs. The second performer didn't really land with the crowd, and the room got pretty quiet. But Nancy Lee absolutely killed it--she had us cracking up the entire time. Overall, it was a fun night out in Old Town.

THE SETUP It would be imprecise to call ForePlay just an arade because it also brings in some of the fun carnie elements you'd catch at a State Fair. One of the more eclectic elements is the axe-throwing range! Tons o' fun. FULL BAR The most beneficial aspect of this stop was the full bar, which - after a couple of hours of heat in the sun while wandering the Midtown Market stalls - was a wonderful treat. Coool beer! There is random parking along the streets and some rare off-street parking lots, but limited parking during events. THE LOWDOWN This is a great stop from to duck into from the heat, or for groups making the rounds. I enjoyed watching a bridal shower when I was here!

With each game costing one to two dollars I felt a little ripped off I couldn't even finish my game of three balls. The pool table me and my friend played on was quite frankly disgusting. Tons of stains on the table and felt peeling. The balls all chipped and scratched. Also there was some issue with something being stuck when the game was first setup with my friend putting it together but I wasn't paying attention. He had to flag down a worker to help resolve the issue. I get it, things are pricey these days, so a newer business has to find a deal when they can, but at least find a way to improve an already overly used item. I don't expect brand new pool tables, but at least tables that look like the business cares Not to mention the ground and walls were just dirty and gross. Seemed like nobody is really cleaning the place. All the tables tops seemed sticky (if you know you know). The velvet lounge just kinda seemed like a random thrown together area, but maybe on a slow Monday it didn't feel right with lack of people. The workers were great and gave great service, just sadly all the half run down amenities that is supposed to make this place great, makes it pretty lackluster. I guess come if you want the axe throwing?
