A diamond in the rough and a great place for delicious treats…read more We were visiting Lincoln's hometown of Springfield, Ill and wanted to get a snack. We found this place online. It is a little south of the city and west of the interstate but it is absolutely worth the detour. It is a rustic place called the Apple barn and parking is right in front. Their website gives a lot more information about it being more than just the main shop that is in the barn. They began as a family apple orchard and expanded over the years into a collection of attractions including two restaurants, a general store, a creamery, a winery, a candy factory, and a Christmas shop, all centered around the original barn built in 1910. We only visited the barn with the bakery goodies and the very friendly staff who helped us get some delicious snacks for the trip back to the hotel. It was great! Even if you don't plan to buy anything, it's worth taking some time to visit to get a snack for your trip or, if you are going to walk around the site, for the extra visit. We found it to be one of the more enjoyable stops to the area capping off a great visit to the Springfield, Ill area.

The playlist is a whole vibe. We had a few appetizers, my favorite was the risotto arancini!, followed by the charred carrots. Both were tasty! The Tandoori pig wings were decent, not my favorite. The entrees were so yummy. I would totally order the bucatini again, that was honestly the best to me, though I had the braised short ribs. They were good, but I wished I'd stuck with my first mind with the bucatini... I was worried about the pepperoni, which I tend to not care for. It was not a problem. The salmon entree is also tasty, so really you can't lose here. I felt confident that whatever was coming out would be a treat. And those beignets ... oh.my!! So tasty!! Excited to go back!

The chicken adobe bowl was great too. Very well seasoned and marinated. The chicken does come on the bone, just a heads up. The seasoned fries were crispy and hot. The side of lumpia hit the spot too. Also crispy and hot, and the perfect bite sauce. The sweet chili sauce was a perfect pairing. The cucumber drink was very sweet. They have a ton of fun and unique fruit drinks. The food took a little bit and didn't all come out at the same time. But you can tell it's made to order and comes out fresh. It can get pretty busy here, since it's so popular. They have a very casual seating area and plenty of parking outside. The ordering system is pretty cool. You order at a kiosk that shows pictures of the individual items. You put your name in and pay right there. The staff comes out later and brings the meal to you.

We put in our order for pick up, and we still had to wait a bit - I think we were there during peak hours. The inside was lively with cute decor and a menu board. They also had an ordering kiosk, which could either be good or bad depending on your tech skills. Our pick up order was: -Chicken Ala Max: cooking style similar to that of the famous Max's Restaurant, not dry and had a great crisp. It came with a housemade mang tomas sauce. If you don't like liver, I would be cautious of Mang Tomas since it is made from that! -Pinakbet: pretty standard, but it had bagoong cooked throughout it and that's all I could ever need. -Hopia: I am not a fan in general, but my mother-in-law liked it -Chicken Inasal: Not dry at all and great marinade over it! -Manila Sweet Pork Sandwich: This is the pinoy version of a Bahn Mi. This is a MUST ORDER. I have no pictures, just sweet memories. We waited to eat this when we got back to STL, which was less than a 2 hour drive and it was still good.
