This small marker sits next to the Swatara Creek and the canal where a modern bridge crosses with…read moreSR 230, just east of Middletown and the Harrisburg International Airport. The marker reads, "This canal was operated from 1828-1884. It connected the Susquehanna at Middletown with the Schuylkill at Reading, following the Swatara and Tulpehocken Creeks. Much coal and iron ore were transported. Course of canal was just west of old mill race." According to the Wikipedia article, "...the initial design called for the construction of a canal from the Susquehanna to the Delaware, the 1825 opening of the rival Schuylkill Navigation from Reading to Philadelphia prompted the Union Canal Company to focus solely on the Middletown-Reading portion of the canal, which when connected would complete the longer conveyance west to the Susquehanna." "The canal was completed in 1828 under the direction of Canvass White, the preeminent canal engineer of the day. Upon its completion it was 8-1/2 ft (2.6 m) wide and had 93 locks. In 1832 a 22-mile (35 km) branch canal was constructed northward from the water works along the Swatara Creek to Pine Grove. The branch canal served as feeder for the summit level as well as allowing the transport of anthracite from the mountains, which became the principal revenue source for the canal operation." The staff was incredibly friendly, and there's no admission fee if you're just shopping at their local vendor market, which takes place on Sundays. We got to browse unique local goods while also learning about the town's history and how it evolved into what it is today. The museum has plenty of parking, clean bathrooms, and a really cool model train display. Definitely worth a visit!

After signing in and making a suggested donation ($1/child, $2/adult, $5/family), we made our way to the train room. I was pleasantly surprised about how large the train display was. There was about 8 trains roaming around a large table that contained a mini city within the display. I loved how there were activity buttons around the table that activated trains, amusement rides, people, and other items. I learned from one of the volunteers there that individuals would start making the display in October for their opening in mid-November. It was also cool to know that these trains were all made between the 1930s and the 1960s. The museum, which was pretty small, also had several smalls rooms that displayed hockey memorabilia and dress up fun for kids. If you have a child(ren) that loves trains, or you loves trains yourself, I highly recommend checking this annual display out.

Have you ever had that friend or that one person you know very well who tells you to see a movie!…read moreYOU HAVE to see this film it's one of the best films and it is their favorite. Well, that's what I did. I went to Midtown cinema to see Sinners. It was a rainy, gloomy day, so it was perfect to go to the movie theater. I worked for myself, so I was able to go to a matinee at roughly about 1 PM. It was a very nice experience. Since I since I had the theater to my entire self I purchased a popcorn and a soda and of course the movie ticket! Well I was surprised to only find out that my bill came out to be $32 for a movie midday however I continued to watch the movie and this movie was okay! But that part that threw me off were the vampires. I definitely wasn't expecting that, but that was a great little pot plot twist at the end. I was not too fond of it, but the cinema was very nice. The bathrooms were very clean and the staff made up for it. I actually got a chance to talk to one of the staff members and we talked about movies and I told them how I didn't understand why it was vampires and then also Hoodoo which I came to find out. Is a different type of magic than Voodoo. I love that the film was fictional and based on a folklore, talking to someone at the movie theater, who actually studied film themselves was an amazing experience. I enjoy the conversation with the staff more than the movie.

The theater itself does not have the sound system like the newer ones, but it was good enough. You could see heads on screen when people walked in or out of the theater, which was cool; have not had that experience since my younger days. Everyone was polite and courteous of other guests. It was a great experience for my daughters and I.
