I'm in love with this place and the people that own it! My late Uncle used to live and work here (Sleeping Bag Bill). For his memorial Russ and Fredda graciously accommodated all of our family and his friends to celebrate his life! We drank, we ate, we sang, we danced, we laughed and we cried. I had the best time and now know why my Uncle chose them to be his family. Russ mixes up a mean drink, and plays and mean guitar and harmonica...not a bad singer either. Fredda makes some kick ass food and runs that place like nobodys business. I will be back, next time on better circumstances and with my dirt toys to go explore!! read more

I enjoyed the food and the interesting historic decor apparently much of which is supplied by a local museum. Great collaboration. However when I went into the restroom and closed the door, there was a front page from early in the last century. Interesting. Stopped to read it and was mortified to see that this establishment elected to display a front page full of racist content. Why, of all the newspaper displays available is this the one the owners chose to hang......? I will not support this place again and will post my review on fb. We'd heard about this place and flew by at 90 mph on our motorcycle trip across Hwy 50. Flipped a yooey and rolled in for a burger. This place has been here for what 300 years? Ceiling covered with dollar bills yellowed by grilled burgers and fries. Had a cheeseburger that hit the spot. Cool that they give free sodas and coffee to the military people stationed somewhere in the area. (I think they hide aliens out in that part of the desert. You see signs everywhere that say caution low flying aircraft) You can get gas here but I think it's gonna be expensive (Nothing like the $5.35 a gallon we saw in Death Valley though!) read more

Cool place to visit and good food. We rode to Middlegate on the motorcycle on a nice January day from Carson City and I am glad we did. I ordered a Western Burger and my wife ordered a hot pastrami sandwich. Both were good. But what sets this place apart from others places is the environment. It is old and definitely represents old Nevada. Being a lifetime native of Nevada I can appreciate these places. Very unique and a gem out in the middle of nowhere. As we entered the place we were greeted by the owner. He and his wife both work hard to keep the place open. His wife took our order and was the sweetest thing you ever saw. Both were very personable and sincerely appreciate our business. After we ate we walked around the place both inside and outside and fell in love. Old cars, outhouses, and a wooden porch really make you think about what this place was many years ago. If you haven't been there you should take the time, if you have then go again. On Highway 50, Middlegate Station is a welcome sight past Sand Mountain State Park where in the "middle of nowhere" lies a sleepy ghost town hotel, grill and bar. It even sports a sign with the population of 18 being crossed out and rewritten as 17. We entered the bar and grill, our feet crossing old planks of wood that creaked as we set foot on them. It was somewhat dark and smelled of delicious grilled hamburgers as we looked for an empty table. We didn't want to eat outside, though we could have, it was a bit too cold to enjoy fresh air. A friendly couple offered their table to us and we took their offer to sit with them and were pleased that they had a lot of interesting stories that we could share. I ordered the Mushroom Swiss burger and my dining partner had the Patty Melt. Both came with fries. The meat tasted as if it had some extra seasoning than just ground hamburger but I could not discern the spices or herbs. It was the best Mushroom Swiss burger I've had- ever. The Patty Melt my dining partner had was excellent as well and nothing was left over. As we ate and chatted, our eyes scanned the room and one could not help but notice all the one dollar bills with personal graffiti on them pasted to the ceiling. There must be over $300-$500 of one dollar bills on the ceiling! One wall had cloth patches from police, military, firefighters and more from as far away as New York. One thing about this place with its rustic decor, it's just very welcoming and comfortable. They were busier today than I have ever seen them and yet the staff was in control, unstressed and service was friendly and efficient. Before the couple we had sat with left, we talked about the "shoe tree". A tree where people tie two shoes together by their laces and throw them into a tree to become tangled in the branches so they hang like ornaments in the tree. The original tree was cut down but a new "shoe tree" was starting again. We decided to leave Middlegate Station and travel about 1/2 mile towards Austin to see the tree on the left side of the road. It's impressive in a weird way. Worth seeing. Puzzling. Another area sight: the Earthquake Faults: A long gravel road takes you to an unimpressive spot that is best left for someone who's a geology buff. Nothing much to see here. Not really worth the time or the strain on your vehicle. read more

Middlegate proclaims itself the middle of nowhere, and they aren't kidding, not should you venture out in that direction it's definitely worth a stop. Middlegate Station is a great little dive bar with lots of character,a good beer selection, and good food. The atmosphere is homey, and the decor is eclectic and fun. Some years ago when i was in the Navy and stationed with the Marines, i went away on a 1 month exercise to "B.F.E" Fallon, Nevada. Believe it or not but theres actually a Navy base in the middle of a farm practically in a cow pasteur and you are overcome with the stench of methane emitted from the cows. Anyway, one day we were coming back in our convoy of Humvees on Hwy 50, and heading back towards Naval Air Station Fallon, when all a sudden, the whole convoy was hungry for real food. We were actually in the desert for a few days, stuck with eating preserved/packed MRE's. Anyone in the military would know that you get "backed up" after eating days of that crap. So after spending hours on the long, hot, lonely, desolate Hwy 50, we came across a tiny town. Not even a town, more like a gathering. The welcome sign off the Hwy read: "Middlegate. Population 12." The first thing that came to mind was the movie, The Hills Have Eyes. The one thing that stood out in this micro-town was a makeshift diner being held up by wood planks with a big sign reading "Bar." So the whole convoy collectively decided to stop over and and finally get some real food. As me and the entourage of Marines walked into the diner, the first thing you notice are the many dollar bills posted all over the inside of the diner, from the walls to the ceiling which i thought was really cool. There were also squadron/unit patches on the wall, meaning we weren't the only military personnel who have stopped over and ate at this diner. This diner was very small. Occupancy was probably around 15 or so with a billiard table in the back. The owner was very kind and welcomed us as if she hadn't seen a single soul in years...or maybe it was just us in uniform. It was a very small and simple menu. You had your burgers, breakfast and steak. Most of us went with the double bacon cheeseburger. Lemme tell you, this was probably one of the best homemade burgers i've ever tasted. Made from scratch, it had 2 huge buns, fresh ground beef patty, cheddar cheese and 4 thick slices of bacon. Definitely a belt-buster that weighed probably a pound. I took this thing down within minutes and enjoyed every single bite of it. My damage came out to only under $10. When we got done paying our bills, the owner welcomed us to pitch in a dollar and write a message and our military unit on the dollar, and she would post it up with the many hundreds of dollars posted in the diner. Great service, delicious food, and a unique setting in the middle of no-where-land, i'd say this place is worth the stopover if you happen to be cruising Hwy 50. Btw, if you decide to pull over and check this place, check out their Shoe Tree and the antique gas pump station. Creepy, but worth checking out its uniqueness. read more

When I travel, I tend to buy foodie things: Barbecue sauces, spices, mixes, sauces, etc. They're easy to travel with and when I get home, they don't take up much space -- at least not for long. Every now and then I find something and wish I'd bought a case of it. Or better yet, I wish I'd hashed out a deal with the purveyor to distribute it in New York. Manhattanites are fools who will pay any amount of money for anything from somewhere else. On my last trip through Fallon -- and yes, there have been a few -- I randomly bought a bottle of the hot sauce at Middlegate Station. I should instead have bought a case. It is, no question, the best hot sauce I've ever had. I've had the same bottle for a year and a half because I eat the stuff in droplets to make it stretch. When it's nearly gone, I'm going to devise a way to replenish my stock. Maybe ANOTHER road trip? Maybe pay a friend passing through to buy me a few bottles. Maybe hire a cowboy? It's the best restaurant for 50 miles around. My wife and I stopped in and had some burgers. They were delicious. They sell a "Monster Burger" the contains a full pound of beef. I don't know if I could polish off anything that big. I had a bacon cheese burger and my wife just had a plain cheese burger. They came with special sauce and home made fries. A bar in the middle of nowhere. and I mean NOWHERE. Apparently, it was built back in 1859 for the Overland Stage coach. This place defines "the middle of nowhere" I admit I had HUGE misgivings when I pulled up at 7pm on a Friday. I was supposed to be attending a rifle class nearby the next morning bright and early, so I'd thought to drive out there, get a room for the night, and be ready to go at 8am the next morning. I walked in and there were 5-6 people in the place, all whom seemed to live there. Well, In less than 5 min I was given a key to one of the rooms, a burger was cooking up for dinner, and I was drinking my favorite beer in the world. 1554 beer is made by the same guys as Fat Tire, but I have NEVER before found a bar that serves it. Well, they did. :) A couple of hours later, I bade everyone there good night and headed off to get some sleep. The next morning, there were about 30-40 people at the class. When we broke for lunch and went back to the bar, this same place got everyone's food cooked to order and all of us back to the class in less than an hour. The food here ain't fancy. it's purely Burgers and fries and such like that. But it's GOOD.... Bottom line: The food's good. The beer's good. The people are very friendly. Two words... NEW YEARS. And let me tell you that it lived up to all my dreams. Fun, great drinks, cheap and two rooms to boot.

When we arrived we were greeted nicely by two people from behind the bar. We found a place to sit and decided to order the monster burger to share. Our waitress forgot to ask us if we wanted anything to drink. We sat and chatted for a while and looked at all the antiques on the walls and dollar bills stapled to the roof. Then hear a lady from behind the bar "what do you want to drink?" We asked if they had Dr. Pepper and they said yes. So we ordered two Dr.Pepper's. The Dr. Pepper's show up in small glasses with bendy straws in them. We go to sip and both look at each other weird because it didn't taste like Dr. Pepper at all. Tasted like some off brand vanilla soda. The Monster burger comes to the table and we cut it half and try to eat it. I personally couldn't eat it because i really dislike mustard.. i tried to "muster" through it but i just kept wanting to gag. The bread that was the 'bun' was like a loaf of french bread. My boyfriend was able to eat the meat patties of the burger and that was all. At one point i ran out of soda and was coughing and no one cared to check on us or offer us more drinks. I had to start sipping on my boyfriend's drink to keep from coughing. During this whole time there was a guy wondering around the restaurant talking to himself waving his hands acting quite weird , possibly on drugs. Our waitress has now gone on her dinner break eating at the bar and talking very loudly to people sitting at the bar and she is slurring her speech like she was drunk.. and we over hear another customer saying he was still waiting for his drink that had the same waitress. We overheard her say "sorry, i was too busy thinking about eating and forgot your drink" as the man behind the bar brought the customer their drink. We sat and waited for our check for about 15 minutes. I eventually told my boyfriend we should just pay at the bar I don't think she is coming back. We paid our bill and got in the car as fast as we could. We will not be eating there ever again and we suggest no one should. Five stars for atmosphere because this place is worth the drive! Originally a Pony Express stage stop, this quaint bar/restaurant maintains that old Nevada feel- wood stove, pine paneling and the original waiter who claims he's retired! Allowing for Middlegate Station's somewhat remote location, I'll give the food 4 stars.. We wandered in off the trail, hungry after hiking. The smell of grilled onions and sizzling patties enticed our party of four to order burgers - two Deluxe, one Patty Melt and one Sourdough Patty, all served as waiter Greg reported, at 165 degrees. Two of the burgers came with fries, which were actually crispy and good. My sourdough Patty, with the grilled onions, peppers and cheddar on grilled bread, was tasty and filling. Descriptions of the deluxe burger ranged from good to delicious. If you find yourself in this part of Nevada, don't pass by! Stop in, eat and partake in a little slice of Nevada culture! read more

We found middle gate station kind of by accident. It is an absolute gem and I must stop if you're driving Highway 50. It is a historic stop on the pony express. We ended up overnighting there. After a long drive, sprinkled with mechanical issues, I walked into the bar for a quick beer around 9:30 pm at night, the evening ended up around 2 am. The food is above average for these parts! The owner an affable man, brought out his guitar and started playing country music. Upon leaning I had rudimentary bass and harmonic skills, he went in the back and produced both instruments and we jammed all night. The beer was cold and locals very friendly. The ambiance was awesome - that of a small town middle Nevada bar and grill with happy patrons, a woderful atmosphere and live music from a guy playing a guitar and singing who was great. Middlegate Station is the coolest middle-of-nowhere saloon I've ever been to. What was once a stop for the Pony Express is now a kitschy restaurant/bar/motel/gas station littered with old west artifacts, an old pool table and memorabilia from the numerous military units that have made the pilgrimage here. The people that work there are exactly the friendly, no-nonsense types you'd expect to live and work in the Nevada high desert. The bar is low brow and distinguished, with a wide selection but only one beer on tap: High Life. The food is simple and delicious. Burgers are the main menu item and cooked fresh on the grill behind the bar. If the normal burger isn't big enough for you, try the Monster, a tasty behemoth that if you finish as served you win a t-shirt. They are also open early for breakfast which is equally satisfying. Make this place your stop when you travel US 50, or make the trip out, you won't be disappointed. read more

There are some rough looking characters in this place (yes, I know it's a roadhouse/bar) and it's very old and seems dirty...not really conducive to having an appetite to eat. This is a gem near practically nothing except a shoe tree and a naval air installation. The burgers are terrific and for a fair price, but the character of the place is even better. Although it was practically empty when we went, it looked like a scene out of Top Gun. There is a pool table, a bar, a big TV, and dollar bills stapled to the ceiling with peoples names and dates that they ate there. A stray cat has adopted a spot on the front porch, which is adorned with all kinds of memorabilia. It is a great place to stop and catch a good, solid meal before embarking back on the loneliest road in America. read more
