Mavis Tires & Brakes - Brake pads that Mavis said needed changing asap

I brought my vehicle in…read morefor brake work, and during the process, the technician damaged the caliper piston by improperly twisting it back into place. The store manager, Chris, was upfront about the issue and mentioned they were working on sourcing a new part. When I inquired about a rental due to the delay (which was caused by their error), Chris said he wasn't sure about rental options but gave me the number to their corporate office. After speaking with Elvin at corporate, he offered to arrange an Uber home and said the part should arrive by Monday. When I asked Chris about the Uber, he said he didn't have the app. I offered to order my own ride if they would reimburse me, and Chris agreed, saying they would also cover the labor due to their mistake. However, communication and consistency quickly fell apart. On Monday, I was still told the part hadn't arrived. I reminded them that I had already missed work due to this delay and again requested a rental. This time, my request was escalated to a regional manager, Craig, who took a different tone. He seemed more focused on shifting blame, suggesting the issue was caused by old brake pads. I informed him that I had new Brembo ceramic pads installed at Mavis less than a year ago, and I had photos proving their condition. After some back-and-forth, he said he would push the rental request forward -- though it seemed more like appeasement than actual action. When I finally picked up my vehicle on Thursday, I was surprised to find I was being charged for labor, even though I had been previously assured this would be covered due to their technician's error. Just 20 minutes after leaving the shop, I heard a noise and discovered one of the anti-rattle clips from the front brake pads had fallen off due to improper installation. I returned to the store, and instead of taking responsibility, the manager blamed the issue on the age of the clips, saying I should have bought new ones. This experience left me with serious concerns about the quality of workmanship, internal communication, and customer service at this location. I gave them multiple opportunities to do right by the situation, but instead, I received shifting stories, blame-shifting, and ultimately more inconvenience and cost than I started with. I would strongly urge others to think twice before trusting their vehicle with this shop.

I asked a fellow FJ owner in my community for a recommendation, and they pointed me to Pope Davis on Hardscrabble. My first visit left a strong impression. Kevin at the front desk greeted me respectfully and ensured we were aligned on expectations, that I understood the process, and that I felt well cared for throughout the appointment. I arrived for my 8:00 a.m. service--which included an oil change, tire rotation, and wheel alignment--and everything was completed on time and to my satisfaction. The pricing felt fair, the service was thorough, and the overall experience gave me confidence that I've found the right place for my ongoing automotive needs. I'll definitely be returning for my next service milestone. Great job, Kevin and team!

Edit/Update: After leaving this review here and in several places, Pope Davis did in fact reach out…read moreand sent me a check to cover the full expenses at the dealership (the cost of the diagnostic fee and the repair itself). Their theory is that the sensor must have been replaced during a tire change in 2022 but was not registered in their computer. Honestly, I don't know or really care what happened. I appreciate that they took responsibility and covered the expenses in the end. My recent experience with Pope Davis was extremely frustrating, disappointing, and left me questioning the shop's integrity much less their quality or any desire to stand by that quality. I took my '22 Toyota Corolla after a tire developed a leak in early November 2025. Turns out tire couldn't be repaired, it wasn't gong to be long before we needed new tires, so went ahead and bought 4 new ones. That seemed to go well enough. However, 4 days later, a warning popped up on our car that the tire pressure monitoring system was malfunctioning. After checking the tires were correctly inflated and attempting to reset it, the warning continued. Unfortunately, I couldn't get back to Pope Davis until a couple weeks later. I was there for at least 3 hours, with them claiming all of their tools and scanners showed the tire pressure sensors were working correctly and that I would need to take it to the dealer. Dealer said they could not get a signal from one of the tire pressure sensors, and suggested I return to Pope Davis as the most likely explanation in their view was that it was damaged during the tire replacement. When I returned to Pope Davis, they refused to take any responsibility. They offered to charge me to replace the tire pressure sensor but also couldn't guarantee it would work because they do not have a Toyota computer to program them. Up until this point, I was frustrated but at least believed they were being honest with me, and I guess they could claim plausible deniability that this sensor that was working fine before taking it in there just coincidentally became defective 3 days after they worked on the car. To be clear, I asked them if there was any chance they could have changed one of the sensors, and they said no. I believed they should have assumed the cost of repair at the dealership at that point, but they refused. Their attitude was this isn't our problem because our computers say it's working, it's your car's problem for not detecting it. However, when I returned to the dealership to have the work done, lo and behold, they pulled out a cheaper, after market sensor that isn't compatible with the car. Hence why Pope Davis computers showed it was working but Toyota's and the car's computers couldn't detect it. Even after returning and showing them this sensor, Pope Davis continued to deny any knowledge of it and say they have no idea how it got there. Their explanation was because they didn't charge me for it, it couldn't have been installed by them. No one has done any work on this car besides the dealer and Pope Davis. We've done tire rotations and alignments at the dealer, but the only place that has taken tires off the wheel is Pope Davis, once on this recent change and once 3 years ago to replace one tire. So, the only possible explanations are that this sensor was mysteriously replaced at some other point in time but didn't register as a problem until after they did work on the car, that sometime between when they did the work and the error message showing ,someone took the tire off the car, took out the original sensor, and replaced it, or that they damaged the original stock sensor when replacing the tire and put on a cheaper replacement that was unbeknownst to them incompatible with the car thinking I'd be none the wiser. I guess I have no hard evidence it was their fault, but you can be the judge of which of those explanations seems most plausible. I can certainly say with clarity that they gave me nothing but hand waving. In conclusion, in trying to support a local business and save a hundred bucks or so on tires, I spent the better part of 3 days and am out several hundred dollars extra in repairs at the dealer. I certainly won't be back here, and I'd strongly discourage anyone with a Toyota or anyone with a newer car from going here. At the least they don't know what they're doing and/or don't have the equipment to work on newer cars' systems.
