Alotta annoyance just for an oil change. They tempt you with those coupons, you go in, you're told you have to wait hours without your car. Lovely. Guess I'll go shopping and get tipsy on margaritas at the dreaded Uncle Julio's. This last time though brought up some cause for concern that makes review writing necessary. This time, got there at 11am on a Sunday and was told that they might not get to it until tomorrow. Wow. But okay, we can pick it up after work. I guess. If we have no choice. And no going and buying a load at Aldi's today I suppose.... Then next day they call. Offer a huge laundry list of things that are wrong. On a car that rarely moves and if it does it's in the city or an occasional suburb trip. And they have some HIGH prices. The end of this was the kicker. And someone else had this issue as well I see. They left the keys in the ignition WITH the window rolled down. The parking lot was jammed pack and my car was practically under the train tracks next to them, where anyone could just walk up and take it. Lovely. And it's just how they do things here. The only redeeming thing here are the girls working the front desk. Always friendly and smiling. And apologetic about how long it's going to take. Lord knows what verbal abuse they take because of their mechanics. All-in-all, if you have time to wait and don't mind your car being left with the keys in it on Clybourne then fine. I spoke to Andy on the phone to ask if he could fix a small part on my car on a busy Saturday this past Memorial Day weekend. Although they were busy, he was really nice and told me I should bring my car down so he could look at it and try to get it fixed that day. I dropped off the car and they had a look and gave me an estimate (which I found to be very reasonable) and fixed my car while I waited! It took about an hour, but the problem, which could have been a doozy for my engine, was fixed! I can't thank them enough for taking the time to fix my car on a holiday weekend when I know they were swamped to being with. Simple, not terribly fast (1.5 hrs wait for an oil change just past lunchtime on a Tuesday), but they're in a nice neighborhood so I got some walking in, and hung out at Borders for an hour. Overall, an umcomplicated and not terribly expensive way to get an oil change. read more

Not an extremely well run shop but I think the manager is fine with that status. Unfortunate b/c the servicemen seem overworked and under appreciated. Went in to patch a nail in a tire, no real leak though. Was quoted $30 by the manager and was talked into an oil change. Came back after 2 hours at closing (yes, they do leave your car in the lot with windows open and keys in) and found out they didn't change the oil. The manager forgot to put in the order (but left early for the day). Someone hustled to get it done in 25 minutes and gave me $10 off, which I appreciated, but the experience was annoying. read more

Took a cab last night and noticed immediately (from the harsh grinding sound coming from the right front wheel) that the cab had a busted wheel bearing. The driver said he had taken it in already and the shop told him nothing was wrong with it. I said that's ludicrous and asked him, "Where did you take it? Yes, 100% of the time they come back with a laundry list of things wrong with your car, only some of which are actually true. For repairs, I'd find another, more trustworthy shop. read more

Recently my catalytic converter and the sensors associated with the part were stolen off of my car which royally sucked but George and Javier at this specific Midas location made it much easier to cope with! George was very kind over the phone assuring me that even on a Sunday the service would be affordable and timely! Once I arrived George promptly greeted me and Javier took my car into the shop right away. Both George and Javier walked me through what was missing on my car and how it was going to be fixed! The price I was given was affordable as well as reasonable which is something I appreciated very much. Overall, great experience! Please spend the extra $$$ and drive the extra miles to a new shop. I FOOLISHLY went there (i think this is my 3rd time and trust me not charmed) and they completely jacked up my car. I had a general idea what the problem was, so when the mechanic called saying it was something completely different i was confused. What further complicated things for me was (not the $800 bill) but the fact that the **** ran WORSE then it did when i put it in. I'm pissed. My car was returned FILTHY (says the girl who hardly washes her car, but happened to just before putting it in the shop) and made up krap excuses to justify services they did during my last service (approx 2 months before this incident). Sad thing is I'm one of those people who will refer shops and will ALWAYS return to get even the minor services. I guess they are hurting in the economy so think they can cheat people. Even that doesn't make sense because $700 now doesn't amount to the money you could get from a customer who repeats. I'm spending the extra money and taking my car where my friend recommended to fix the *** those **** messed up with this botched repair. I'm just furious right now. Staff is too busy talking to each other to provide good customer service (I was ignored upon entering the "lot" and then treated rudely when I asked if I should pull into the garage). Quoted me a 2-hour wait time for an OIL CHANGE on a SUNDAY when NO OTHER CARS IN GARAGE and STAFF CHIT-CHATTING!! Took my car to Jiffy Lube, where I was greeted kindly, taken care of within 30 minutes (with a full waiting room to boot) and on my way. Will NEVER consider going to MIDAS again, even with my $19.99 coupon for an oil change. Poor, poor, poor, especially when a competitor is clearly more customer-service oriented. read more

Al the owner is a Scam Artist. His price was double what another Midas was charging. And said I couldn't use my lifetime warranty on brake pads which I paid for last time I got work done. I have been going to this location for about 3 years. Since the privately owned garage i used to go to refused to fix my exhaust system. Every time I go there they are always friendly, and the same people working. It is nice to see a familiar face when stepping inside. The prices are average. I like this location because I can drop off my car and walk to several of the local stores to kill time window shopping or to spend more money. I like the fact that they will tell you what items might need to be taken care of other than what you go in for. They don't make you do it is just a suggestion. Oh and they do those look overs for free. I have gotten an oil change, an exhaust system, tires, belts and filters replaces as well as a flush of fluids and prob a few other things done here over the years and I am totally happy! This place is solid. Nothing that is exceptionally great and nothing that is outwardly poor. They get the job done, they do their courtesy check and its in a relatively timely manner. Usually runs about 30 min longer than what they tell me it will take but I make sure I have nothing going on so it's not a big deal. I give them 4 stars over 3 solely because they are the only Midas that has the online coupon for a 20 dollar oil change, and that made me drive the extra 10 min to Lincoln Park instead of going to one 2 min from my place in West Loop. I've gone a couple times, and have no problem going back. All of their other services seem ridiculously overpriced but I'll check the site for coupons cuz well, when you're broke you gotta 'clip' those coupons. read more

I'm sure Midas is great for oil changes and other basic things, but I brought my car in after it started making a really loud noise and they called to tell me that the catalytic converter was broken in half. They were making it sound as though the two pieces were disconnected and hanging on by a thread. I asked if it was urgent to get it fixed, since they had quoted me $1,200 for repairs, and they said "I would say it's pretty urgent. It's technically illegal to drive it since it wouldn't pass emissions, but more importantly, it's broken directly below where you sit in the car and is leaking toxic fumes that you're breathing in." I asked if I could drive it still (I'm a poor college student) and they said "I wouldn't. You really should drive this until it gets fixed." I asked for a breakdown of the cost to be sent to me, where I find that they're quoting me almost $1,000 for the converter. When I look up that exact part online, how much is it? $300-$400. So I go pick up my car to take it to another auto shop. This auto shop (Alba Auto off of Clark St.) took a few minutes to look at my car, came back and asked why I brought it in. He asked if it was just the noise that concerned me and I told him that Midas had basically said the car was poisoning me. Jerry, the owner at Alba, walked me to my car and pointed out the small crack in my secondary converter, near the back of my car. He said if the noise bothered me, he could fix it for $200 and I shouldn't have a problem again. So thank you, Midas, for attempting to charge me $1,200 for a relatively unnecessary job. If you have an actual issue with your car, PLEASE get their quote, do some research, and go elsewhere! read more

Over tightened light nuts on a brake job, warped rotor within a few weeks. Swollen lug nuts and more issues. They replaced rotors for free however created more problems than what they originally repaired. read more

DON'T DO IT! 1st, please note that the positive reviews relate to work JiffyLube or your in-bred cousin could perform without a major screwup. So, a little over a year ago, we were told by another mechanic that a ball joint needed to be replaced. Family member entrusted this work to the people at this "My-asz" to perform the work because they're close (I know, but you've got to let some people bump their heads). So "My-ask" tried the up-sell spiel in the form of "Oh Lawd! Yo struts need replacin'"! But the force was strong and only the ball joint was replaced. So we took the vehicle to Reliable (5-stars) for other work and asked them to look over the vehicle. Reliable told us there was no problem with the struts and a ball joint was bad (You only get 1 guess as to whether it was the OEM or "My-asz" part...) The franchise-owner at "My-asz" says they didn't say struts were needed but that they MAY be needed (riiight). He asks to see the ball joint (noble), looks at the part and says it only had a 90-day warranty (so why ask to see the part?) then says "I wish it had been brought back to me sooner. Huh? It wasn't taken to Reliable for ball joint replacement, they FOUND the problem. Oh, and by the way, the franchise owner (who is very proud that he's been there so long) says "I wish you'd read the warranty paperwork". A real professional operation would've offered to fix the supposedly bad struts and a discount but no offer was made. Could it be that the issue with the struts doesn't exist? You tell me. The shop is near the old Cabrini area. He's been so used to telling half-truths and shady dealing for so long it's in their collective DNA! I am really surprised by the low reviews. I've been taking my car here for the last 5+ years and have never had a problem. I've never had them do major work on my car - so most of the items Midas does for me is routine maintenance. They do get very busy on the weekends, so I usually call ahead to check out wait times. But even then, I'm able to drop my car off - run errands around the place and then come back and pick it up. read more

I took my car there on a Sat. Afternoon at 2:30 with no appointment. They were very busy. I had a rattling muffler. They got me in, diagnosed the problem, repaired it, and had me on my way in just a couple of hours. They were very efficient and communication was great. Super nice employees. DO NOT BRING YOUR CAR HERE I had a problem with my gear assembly. I took it to Midas on Clybourn. They charge $110 simply to diagnose the problem. I was desperate, so I agreed. They called 2 hours later with a laundry list of problems, totaling $2800. I said I couldn't justify that, so I went back to retrieve my car. Instead of being satisfied with being paid $110 for their brief efforts, they wanted more. They increased the bottom line to $119, to cover shop supplies. Shouldn't those shop supplies be in the $110? How dishonest. I brought the car to a small shop, and got it fixed for $450. Avoid these chains, they have to share the money with corporate, and this makes them uncompetitive. But this Midas shop is beyond uncompetitive, they are an absolute ripoff. I visited this Midas for a routine oil change & asked them to provide me an estimate for new tires & brakes. I knew I needed these. I received a call from Paul stating while changing my oil they came across a list of issues including that a rodent had built a nest near my engine & chewed up a bunch of wiring in the area. Paul showed me the damaged & presented me with a $4,800 bill for a bunch of items that needed addressed on my car. That was too much. My car is probably not even worth that. He told me I could hold off on some of it, but the tires, brakes, rodent damage, & control arms were a must & presented a safety issue. I decided to only move ahead with my scheduled oil change & wire clean up from the rodent. When I got home, I looked at the estimate again & realized I was charge for 4 spark plugs & pigtails, but Paul had only shown me damage to 2-3 wires. I called Paul, and he said he would change that from 4 to 3 (?). When I picked up the car, he said "Okay, that will be $736.70. I requested a breakout of these costs first. He told me he had "cut me a deal on the labor" for the wiring. Luckily, I had brought the previous estimate & noticed he had actually increased the labor by $27 (?). I asked why he was charging a $49.99 shop fee & what the $10 "other fee" was. He said the shop fee was based on how much your bill is, however, the shop fee was the same price on my $4,800 bill as my new bill. Paul removed the $10 "other fee" (I am sure he hoped I wouldn't notice) & lowered the shop fee to $20. After the adjustments, my bill went down from $736.70 to $623.77. I set up 2 appointments today for tire & brake estimates with a full car inspection. Upon completion, I asked both to look at the control arms bc I was told they needed replaced. Both shops said absolutely not. Then, I showed them the before & after photos of the wiring work done. They pointed out there were only 2 new pigtails installed. I paid for 3. I also asked them what the average price for this labor and parts job would be. They both said $200-$250. I was charged $548.84. Today, I also pulled the paper work from the inspection I had done at Ford 900 miles ago,, and I noticed they also rated my control arms in the green - meaning in good condition. This Midas is unethical at best, not to mention fraudulent and illegal. PLEASE DO NOT GO HERE!!!!!! There are plenty of other awesome car shops and Midas locations in the city. The Midas on Grand is awesome and so honest! Also, Budget Auto Repair & Nortown Auto are great! Both located on North Avenue. I'm not sure why the reviews here are so low; I've been bringing my car here for routine maintenance for over 2 years and have never had a problem. I most often just get an oil change here which you can get a coupon for off their website at any time. I recommend calling ahead to make sure they can fit you in, but they are very accommodating. They keep track of how often your tires are rotated, and rotate them as needed without charge. Jiffy Lube charges extra for this service. I recently had a flat tire, and Midas was accommodating with when I should bring it in. I was due for new tires anyway, and they were very helpful in selecting which tires to choose over the phone. They even said if I couldn't get my old tire off and my donut on, just to let them know since I live very close and they would even come help. The price for all 4 new tires was very reasonable. I would rather spend a little more time getting services done for less money than at Jiffy Lube any day. read more

Came by on a Saturday without an appointment and they looked at my car right away and were able to squeeze me in and fix my muffler and exhaust system very quickly. They took the time to explain what happened to my car and then the manager knocked off a chunk of the cost!! Everyone was very friendly and helpful. The guys at Midas (Ron & Andy) saved me $500 on work that Toyota indicated I needed, but didn't really need! After taking my car in to the dealership to be evaluated, Toyota indicated I needed roughly $1000 of work -- in getting a second opinion at Midas, they proved how much dealerships try to take advantage of customers, especially female customers. I can't speak highly enough of my experience at Midas. Shame on Toyota for their lack of servicing the customer with integrity and honesty. Toyota has forever lost me as a consumer moving forward and I will most definitely be continuing my service at Midas! read more

This place is terrible. Every time I went in there they found something wrong that ended up costing me several hundreds of dollars. They definitely prey on people that know nothing about their cars. I once took it in because I had a clanging nose coming from under my car. They said it was the brakes. So, they changed my brakes. 10 minutes after driving it off their lot, the same noise started. When I finally inspected the car myself, it was just a loose stabilizing wire, that I fixed in all of 10 seconds. If anything good came from going here, it's that I now try to do all my own car work so I don't have to deal with people like this. Don't go here. read more

AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL! What a bunch of scam artists. I expect a little bit of an upsell when you get car repairs, but this is ridiculous. I took my car to a GM dealership in the burbs b/c my car was making a metal scraping noise & they said I needed new brake pads. I said cool I have the lifetime warranty on brake pads at Midas. So, I took my car in Saturday morning telling them exactly what I needed done. The manager, AL, called me back about 45 minutes later & told me that I needed new drums, shoes, & struts. They told me that my car was leaking oil everywhere. I was stunned....how could GM not notice all of that?! The manager gave me an estimate of $1,200 & I told him I would call him back. I immediately called the dealership & they said that there was no way they would miss all of that & to not get the extra work done & bring my car in today to have them relook it over. I took their advice & didn't get the additional repairs. Took my car into the dealership this morning & guess what? There was absolutely nothing wrong with my drums, shoes, & my struts that were apparently leaking oil were in top condition. Do yourself a favor & don't waste your time. Oh, & for the lifetime brake pads, they still charge you $100 to install them. Seriously?!?! Gross. read more

I was gonna savage these guys, but they shocked me and did an amazing job. Went in for a Check Engine light before the required emissions testing here. They said you need a new catalytic converter, which I believed because I'd gotten a cheap one, and it still lasted years, so it was time. 700 bucks but the light was off and I passed the test. 2-3 weeks later, light goes back on. WTF I say, and I'm pissed. But I won't go back and hand them more money. Then it gets super loud a few weeks later, and not only did the light not stay off, but now I need to spend even more money???? Took it in, all ready for a war, but they were low-key. They didn't call me all day, and when they finally did, they replaced the converter and turned off the light NO CHARGE, on warranty. What can I say, I'm impressed. This is an honest place. My VW Passat was approaching 100,000 miles, and I desperately needed to get it past emissions. After charging me an obscene amount of money to fix minor things that didn't solve the emissions issue, a local dealer advised me to trade in the car and be done with it. I came to Midas exasperated and suspicious, looking for a second opinion. Al the manager gave me a quote on replacing specific parts, and committed to getting me past emissions. It turned out that my car was exceptionally difficult and required a lot of additional effort past the original parts replacement, but Al didn't charge me for any of that. He got it past emissions, and it seems I'm all set for now. I'll be back. read more

The first time I went here I had my entire heating/Ac system done and coolant tank replaced. Excellent job and a bit pricey but the car was fine. 2 months later I hear a pooping sound when I shift gears and go in reverse. Shane calls me and tells me I need a new axle. However, 3 months later, I hear the same popping sound and wonder if this was fixed at all or just sprayed with some WD40. Axles shouldn't break down that fast. I took my car here to get my brakes looked at. Since they were busy, I had to leave it there for them to inspect. I get a call later and they tell me that I need to get my callipers, brake pads, rotors, hardware, shoes, and brake fluid is leaking repaired for a grand total price of $1,161.25. I laughed in disbelief. Anyways, I tried to see if I could just get the pads replaced so I could drive home and they said that they wouldn't feel safe doing it. My dad told me that he went to the auto parts store to look at pricing for all these parts and told me that it came to about $300. So, basically Midas wants to charge me 75% more labor??? When I called back and spoke to Ron who said earlier that he'd be okay with replacing just the calliper, and then he gave me attitude. He told me that if I wasn't going to fix the whole thing not to bother. Oh before that, he says I should just come and get my car like he didn't want to deal with me.
