The lockers may be old, but they work!

I swear...reading the reviews, you think you're about to roll up in a gym infested with rats, broken equipment and thugs! LOL. Yelpers, dude. Shame on you. This gym is awesome! The rooms are clean, the equipment is up-to-date, the weight machines are SOOOOO easy to use...even for you dummies, it is NEVER crowded, the staff is friendly, and the pool is awesome. This place...It's like family. (Okay...don't screw up the vibe we have going...cause I'll change my review quick! So far, so good)

There are some really old reviews here that are giving this YMCA a much lower rating than it really deserves. While this facility is not the most up-to-date, it is well-staffed and full of modern equipment, classes and services that all justify paying for a membership... If you use more than one. If you just need a pool or basketball court or gym, you can find cheaper and more modern-looking facilities elsewhere. If you want a lot of options, especially family options, this place is great. Upon arriving, we found the front desk staff to be very friendly and warm. They welcomed us and gave us a tour before we decided to sign up for membership and classes. Many services and classes are included in the membership, but some things (like swim classes) are a little extra. SWIMMING POOL The indoor pool is huge, heated and pretty awesome. On cold days, they turn on the overhead heaters. They have a schedule of pool hours for classes, lap swimming, family swim, etc. On weekday evenings, they seem to have only one lifeguard on duty at a time, even though it gets pretty busy. On weekends, there are always two, plus another in the pool conducting swim classes. I highly recommend the swim classes here. The teachers are great with the kids and the class sizes are often very small, especially before the summer. They offer physical therapy type classes for adults too. The shallow half of the pool (perfect for the kids) ranges from 3 feet to 4 feet. Then it drops to 9 feet in the deep end. No diving boards here. There's almost always a could lanes reserved for lap swimming or classes during an open swim time. I recommend always rinsing off in the shower before getting in the pool. Lifeguards may stop you if you don't. More importantly, even at your cleanest, you have oils and sweat and deodorant and hair products and who knows what else on you that shouldn't be going in the water. Additionally, the chemicals in the pool are easier to wash off if you rinse before and then rinse immediately afterwards. This is EXTREMELY important for anyone sensitive to of pool water. This pool has more chemicals than probably necessary and it makes all of us very itchy after a swim. There are no spa facilities here. There used to be a spa and/or steam room, but not anymore. FAMILY CHANGING ROOM The men's family changing room is a large no-frills locker/bathroom/shower area with easy access to the pool. It's always cold in here, making a shower or coming in from the pool uncomfortably chilly while you're drying off. There are plenty of lockers -- just bring your own lock. And plenty of showers, many with curtains for privacy. The wet floor can be slippery, so be careful. There are adult-only changing rooms on the second floor. CHILD CARE You have up to two hours of free child care while spending time here. This is great if you want to take a class or go the gym, but you have a little one you can't keep an eye on. The hours are limited, but they always seem to be available when we need them on weekend mornings. There are usually two people running the child care, which consists of a couple play rooms and an outside area. EXERCISE EQUIPMENT The exercise equipment here is more technologically advanced than many gyms. They have three main rooms, plus a couple other areas with more equipment, filled with machines and free weights. The machines are linked to a computer network that you can use to keep track of your workouts and get feedback/encouragement from a virtual trainer. When you start, you are invited to meet with a personal trainer who will set you up and help you establish your goals. All of this is included in your membership at no additional cost. EXERCISE CLASSES They have some vigorous classes here everyday. Everyone is sweating and having a good time, so just jump into one! OTHERS There are many other things worth mentioning, although we haven't had the opportunity to use them very much. A basketball court, computer room, preschool, camp, healthy food vending machine, martial arts classes, tumbling, peewee soccer, and plenty more I'm forgetting or haven't discovered yet. I never imagined I'd join a YMCA, but I'm happy we decided to check it out. We're here several times a week for various activities and we're very happy with our membership so far.

Greetings, Coach…read moreTreci is one of the most patient and compassionate instructors I've ever encountered. Having spent years in school earning multiple degrees, I can confidently say she is, by far, one of the best teachers I've ever had the privilege of learning from. My fear of water began in childhood, but Coach Treci's holistic approach, focusing on the mind, body, and spirit, helped me relax, build trust, and truly connect with the water. Today was my very first lesson, and I made incredible progress. I was even able to glide and kick on my own! She is truly a blessing. I highly recommend private sessions to anyone who has a fear of water, you will be amazed at what you're capable of achieving. I'm already looking forward to my next lesson!

We decided to take some time off and try some private lessons after a few months (once he was 3.5). We took him to Treci and she has been wonderful. At first, everything seemed fine…read more During his initial lesson, he worked with one instructor and learned basic skills like blowing bubbles, which was a positive start. However, as we continued, each lesson was with a different instructor, and that lack of consistency made my son increasingly uncomfortable. At his age, familiarity matters, and it became clear he wasn't settling in the way I had hoped. What ultimately led me to write this review, though, was not the instructors--it was the customer service. My interactions with the scheduler/representative regarding scheduling, missed days, and invoices were unpleasant and rigid. There was very little kindness or willingness to work with me, and the communication felt cutthroat rather than supportive. Because of this inflexibility, my son essentially missed out on continued lessons. Instead of working with me as a parent trying to navigate life with two young kids and a disabled husband, I felt pushed out over a missed appointment. In retrospect, I now see how much that experience negatively impacted my son's relationship with the water. I'm writing this while watching my son thrive at Water Wings, where he is happy, confident, and excited to learn. Seeing the difference has made me realize just how behind he became due to how things were handled at Aqua Buddies. Thankfully, there are other options in this city. I truly wish Aqua Buddies placed more emphasis on compassion, flexibility, and customer service--especially when working with young children and families who may need understanding, not rigidity.

At the 1st official lesson, she had him jumping in the pool and flipping over to his back to float COMPLETLEY UNASSISTED! I seriously can't believe how fast she taught him! In full disclosure, in Summer 2023, we enrolled him in a water wings class for 2 months. In Summer 2024, we signed him up with a different 1 on 1 private instructor for a few months. So, my son had familiarity with swim lessons, but he had never been able to float or do much of anything on his own in the water. I mean, he is still working on blowing water bubbles becuase he hates putting his face in the water. So, to see Allyson *magically* had him doing all this with 2 lessons... I mean, I have no words to express my appreciation! She knows what she is doing! She is teaching life saving skills first! And she has a totally laid back and straight forward, no nonsense demeanor that I just respect so much! After the trial lesson, I bought a 10 lesson package and I'm looking forward to all that she is going to teach my son this summer!! Thank you, Allyson!!

He is the most exceptional swim instructor I've ever encountered and we had several before we decided to exclusively have our son swim with him. He is so patient, and does an exceptional job at balancing silliness to bond with the children and discipline to motivate the little swimmers to want to be better and level up to make him proud. My son has been coming to water wings since 9mo old but had to stop for a year due to ear infections. When he returned he was terrified to submerge his head under water and it was just by random chance that he was in a group class with Ryan! He quickly took to Ryan and would scream bloody murder if he didn't swim with his favorite instructor, so we opted for private lessons! It was at that point that everything took a huge turn! We had originally signed Jaxon up to be "water safe" but he was so motivated and built such an amazing bond with Ryan that he has stayed with him for now more than a year in a 1:1 setting and now wants to competitively swim. HE IS now the best swimmer in the house, and is far beyond his peers AND his older friends who are 7+. At THREE YEARS OLD our son has almost perfected the breaststroke, freestyle, 6 kick switches, dominates backstroke, is doing front flips diving into the water, tumble turn flips off the wall, can swim underwater, deep dive for objects, can hold his breath for more than 30 seconds and so much more! NOBODY has ever seen anything like this. Ryan is truly one of a kind and we will forever be grateful for all that he's done for Jaxon! The sky is the limit with such a brilliant instructor by his side! As part of that school's safety training, they threw him in the water wearing street clothes. He was doing ok for about 30 seconds but then panicked and started to sink so one of the teachers had to jump in and pull him out. (It was partially my fault since I mistakenly had him wear long pants that absorbed water). Anyhow, he freaked out and got very scared. We continued to go to that school for several more weeks but he stagnated with his training and the teacher became frustrated and tried to push him too hard so he had a melt down. Fast forward two years, I started taking him to the Hall Swim Academy west LA location about 2 months ago and he started trying again to learn how to swim with Anna. Anna is extremely kind and patient with kids. She demonstrates what she wants him to do and corrects mistakes in his floating and swim strokes and has him repeat as necessary. She is able to recognize how much to push and when to give him more space and repeats instructions as necessary. He loves going to swim class with Anna and is motivated to learn so he can swim with his friends at summer camp. Yesterday, he had two major breakthroughs. He spent most of the class in the pool without wearing goggles which he previously refused to do. Then, on his own, he decided he wanted to try the swim test. So, he put on street clothes over his swim suit, jumped in the water, floated on his back for 20 seconds and then easily swam to the side of the pool and climbed out on his own. He was so proud of himself for overcoming his fear and is now looking forward to his next class with Anna. I am very grateful to Anna for her kindness, professionalism, excellent teaching skills and being such a good motivator. Thank you!!
