The countless times I have entered and felt the entire mood of the place and then suffered through it. I am not an old codger, dear reader. I am fairly optimistic, yet the most expensive issues for dining out are costly. For my time, my wallet and value. With that, I am pleased to offer "Cooperhawk Winery and Restaurant." It is beautiful. Inside and out. It is for the connoisseur and the starter. It is priced right and there is something for everyone. Ordinarily, I would dismiss this type of venue. But it was the occasion of our anniversary and my wife is a wine girl. So I did it. And when we walked in,,, it was stunning. The first thing you will see is the grand wine wall with a long bar in front of it. This is where you can choose wine tastings and flights. Get a little something before dinner. They asked me if I was a card holding member. I laughed and said oh no. By the end of the day, I was. And am glad for it. The staff treats you like you are welcomed guests. Kind. Intuitive... and helpful. They are educated and know their stuff. The wine tasting was outstanding with the Sommelier addressing every facet of the drinks we were trying. And it was delicious. We were called for dinner and sat in the main dining room. Beautiful. Warm. Clean. Immediately, our server showed and wished us a happy anniversary and brought us complimentary champagne. (When you reserve your seats, it asks about special occasions). A bonus. We had a warm soft pretzel loaf with butter as we waited. My wife ordered a filet mignon platter which she defined as excellent. I had a chicken dish with outstanding potatoes and fresh green beans. More wine please. We imbibed. While we were full from the main course they still brought out some truffles to seal the deal. We decided to join the club and got a membership. 2 bottles of exclusive wine a month for $50. A fair value as with it comes wine tastings, complimentary glasses of wine when visiting and several offers a month. We have been back several times, and each is better than the last. I encourage you to come a half hour early to enjoy the spirits and relax before your meal. 10 out of 10.

We went on a Friday morning right when they opened and we had the place to ourselves for the majority of our visit. Having my brother-in-law, a retired automotive engineer, along made it even better. The history was fascinating. My favorite was the half scale working model and full scale side by side of Mama & Baby REO. The replica of the boardroom with the angled table to show who was in power gave a snapshot of board meetings of the past. We took our time walking through. Seeing the EV-1 was especially interesting. If you are a car buff, this would be a must do while in Lansing.

It is named for Ransom Eli Olds, who was a leader in both Olds Motor Works and REO Motor Car Company. The set up of the traffic lights provided quite a bit of entertainment for the family. They offer one car to get in and out of for a photo opportunity, a 1954 Oldsmobile Super 88 Convertible. The rest are for observation, and there are quite a few interesting ones. A "Mama" and "Baby" set is fun to see - the baby is a miniature replica of the full sized mama car. There's also an early EV to see. They have a small paved lot available (check signage, however, as some spots are reserved). Staff was friendly. If you are interested by the history of cars or are accompanied by car enthusiasts, this is well worth a stop!

Their services came highly recommended, stating they had a ton of experience and were all-around nice guys. I was already on the fence about having a DJ as it was. We were having an afternoon wedding and were trying to keep costs low. The reception was only 3.5 hours long... I needed a good price in order to actually book someone. I already had a few quotes and wasn't impressed with any of the prices, so what did I have to lose? I went to their website to do some research and gave them a call. I got Brett, who was incredibly friendly over the phone. He totally understood our situation about having a DJ but gave us hope that there's good DJs out there willing to give a good price on a Sunday wedding. We met him at a local Starbucks to sign the agreement. He went over every section of the contract in detail so we completely understood what he was responsible for and what we were responsible for. And he was incredibly friendly. His personality type gets along with everyone. I love people like that. He accepted payment through Paypal, which was incredibly convenient for us. His website was really intuitive, with detailed forms for us to fill out with details about the ceremony, the timeline of the reception and even a music form so we could choose what songs we wanted him to play. On one of the forms, I made it clear what music I didn't want to hear and he totally stuck with that at the reception. One thing I totally appreciated was how Brett was willing to do the outdoor music preceding the ceremony for no extra charge. We were having an extremely short ceremony, so I just wanted music to lead us down the aisle. We offered to pay extra but he said it wasn't a big deal. How sweet is that? Up until the day of the wedding, Brett stayed in perfect contact with me. He even called me the day of the wedding to make sure I was staying calm (rain on my wedding day when the ceremony was supposed to be outside... of course I wasn't calm.) But it was a nice gesture. The ceremony was moved inside and Brett was awesome with the change of plans. He still played our processional music, jazzy music during dinner and finally dance music after dinner was served. One detail we totally loved was that Brett wore a pink and purple tie so he matched our wedding colors! Small detail that made a big difference. Everyone told me they loved our DJ. Some people even thought he was a personal friend of ours because he was so friendly and personable while on the mic. He played the exact music that I wanted to hear at my reception... classic rock with current dance hits mixed in. It's like he knew me my whole life with the way he nailed my musical preferences. He did perfect. I couldn't say enough nice things about MotorCityHDJ. They turned us from an "on the fence" couple to "we totally needed a DJ" couple.
