Not an honest business. He'll get you in with a cheap quote and then when you pick it up tell you you need a bunch of work which he did and now you have to pay for it. That's what happened to me. Do not trust this place. read more

Came in here a long time ago to sell my bike. They didnt want to buy it, but said I could leave it there and they'll sell it for me and just take a percentage from the sale. I came back later to check on things and they told me they put it out front and it got stolen. They said it wasnt their fault coz it wasnt their responsibility. Even though they left it in front of the store with no lock, which I never told them to do. I always had a gut feeling they stole it themselves and just blamed it on somone else. I also had them look at my sons bike for some modifications I needed. They were supposed to call me when they found a solution with a quote. Insead they just did the work without my approvel and charged me an outragous price. These people are literally crooks. stay away from this place read more

I really hope people are reading these reviews. These guys are the type to take advantage of people. Just read the 1 star reviews if you don't believe me. I took my bike in to get fixed he started asking really weird questions such as "do you live around here?" (i.e. are you desperate or can you walk your broken bike back home?) and "how did you get here?" (i.e. if you came here by bike then you NEED for me to fix this to go back home.) He ended up charging me 35 dollars to reseat my rear derailleur. I did not feel he charged appropriately nor is he a good businessman. It's not like I started biking yesterday. When I need repairs for now on I'll just go to Ferndale. I in fact actually lived in the area and didn't tell him to see how honest he'd be. It's hard to find a good bike mechanic. And boy oh boy did they take advantage of my supposed "situation". I'll only give it 1 extra star because the repair held up. At least there's that. read more

DO NOT get taken by these predators! I took my ebike to this shop in June for a flat fix. To be clear, I am not a rich man with a fancy bike. I am a poor man who does not own a car. I had to bum a ride with a friend to get it there. This so-called bike mechanic charged me over $150 to replace a tire and tube that retail for about $50 total. He knew I was in need and saw an opportunity to take advantage. Unfortunately he did such a horrible job that this "repair" ended up costing me another $100. My rear brakes never worked after I left and the tire soon blew out again. When my brakes were disassembled there was nothing but a sliver of metal left on one side. The wheel had been mounted so badly that the brake pad and spring totally disintegrated. See photo. I own a popular bike model and there are YouTube tutorials explaining how to do literally anything to it, but I guess that jerk could not be bothered. I could have been killed riding in traffic thanks to his negligence. read more

I live close to the bike shop, and each time I need something repaired, I give them a chance to complete the repair. This time needing a shifter replaced, was quoted by Ferndale Bicycle $30. Went into the store, told them received quote from Ferndale, what is their price? Of course he wanted to know how much they quoted me. Asked for his quote, which was $79.99, left the shop again, and will never return. Consumers beware! read more

The owners are great. I went in and bought the bike pictured in my review & they were extremely helpful and informative! The older gentleman fixed my bike up good before I left & the younger gentleman helped me pick out a bike that fit my needs, and load it into my small car in the rain. Lovely bike shop for used and new, beginner and advanced. I went in not knowing a thing, just knowing I wanted a bike. I've used my bike multiple times a week since buying. read more

Very shady shop and they don't even take pride in keeping their shop clean. You have to maneuver around a bunch of crap just to get to the counter and they have tires and everything just piled up against it. I've taken my bike here twice about a year apart. The first time I brought it in, I thought it was suspicious how my chain guard broke off on the ride home. I called and they said, "oh, well, you don't really need that anyway." Second time I took it in, they charged me over $200 to clean the chain, replace a hub and replace the front tire--a tire that somehow sprung a leak in their possession but not when I rode my bike there to drop it off. They gave it back to me covered in grease and now my brakes are also suddenly really loud. They put so much grease on the chain that it coats the back of my right leg in dark grease every time I ride now--something a chain guard would likely prevent, eh? Once you walk in, you can see they don't take their business seriously and do the bare minimum for high cost. read more

This place was amazing! We moved here from a California and have been wanting a bike for my spouse. We met the owner who helped us pick the perfect bike made all the adjustments needed and we never felt like we were being taken advantage of. This is a family owned business and they treat you just like family. We ended up paying for a bike that was on sale and he threw in a free bell! This man is amazing and we will continue to support this place! read more

I bought a pretty cheap flat-pack bike ages ago thinking I could assemble it myself - wrong! It sat in my basement for probably 3 years. Eventually I found a bike rack and it motivated me to bring it to the bike shop around the corner from my house. Finally loaded it up, only to find that the rack was crumbling. Carefully, carefully, slowly got it to the shop in one piece and they told me they would only assemble bikes purchased at their shop. So what was I supposed to do with this heavy bike frame dangling precariously from my car? I went back to the parking lot and called Michigan Bicycles. "Can you take this off my hands today?" They said they couldn't assemble it ASAP but they would let me drop it off immediately, as long as I was ok with waiting a couple of days. It's already been collecting dust in my basement, so what's a few more days? As soon as I arrived at the shop, they came outside and helped me unhook the bike frame from my car and bring it in. Looking around, I noticed how cheap my tires looked compared to everything in the shop and started to wonder if I was going to be upsold on better parts (to be fair, I probably should have been) but that never happened. Four days later I got a phone call from the shop. They wanted to know if I was in the area and if they could deliver so they wouldn't scratch my bike up while it sat around. All week I was thinking I needed to rush and find a new bike rack to haul it home, but 10 minutes later a super nice guy named Mike pulled up in front of the house and dropped it off. I'm thrilled. I'll be back to look at used/consignment bikes with my niece. read more

Took my bike in for a tune-up. Steve was friendly and the service was completed in the same day.

These guys wanted to charge me $1800 for a bike that a company shipped them specifically to sell for retailed price $1300 these guys just want the money and when i said ill just find something cheaper and hung up they just called me the next morning saying they will sell it to me for $1400 and they started saying a whole bunch of lies about 10 other people begging him for it attempting to pay $3000 and $4000 for a $1300 bike like how bad of a lie is that and he said he will still hold it for me he wont give it to them and he wants me to come quick cause im a state away and i couldnt get it for another 3 days and he was saying he will hold it for me, if you guys are gonna lie please just make it sound believable or just not at all cause im not driving to a whole different state wasting all that gas to risk getting lied to again and the bike isnt there, possibly sold to someone else without him telling me i just cant trust liars. read more

Overpriced and unprofessional staff. We use them because they are close but no more. Berated me for putting on own bike together. Then proceeded to charge me $30 bucks to "adjust" the bike. I took a business card for this place off of the local postings at New York Bagel -- I guess I figure whoever patrons NY Bagel can't be bad. Great reasoning, I know. But what got me to take the card was the $19.95 tune up and free pick up / delivery. Really? FREE pick up and delivery? It was time to call them and see if they would come from Oak Park to Detroit to pick up my bike.... they would! Fantastic! Let me tell you about Steve, the owner and clear bike enthusiast. He really knows his stuff. And he's really passionate about what he does. He called me quite a few times to make sure that he was doing what I wanted, to confirm pick up, to give me options of what I could get done. Steve also offers a $80 total overhaul special. He took apart everything on my bike, cleaned it, put it back together and lubed it up. He put a new chain on it (which it really needed) and put on some really nice tape on my bars. Steve did NOT try to sell me on ANYTHING that wasn't necessary. He didn't do anything that didn't need to be done just to mark up the sale. Steve even called me up telling me about the many different options I had for bar tape, once we decided on something he promised "it will look really nice." And it does! It's fantastic! Sexy, I dare say. The shop itself is something you would expect for a neighborhood bike shop. Single speed cruisers and mountain bikes, accessories for the casual rider. Nothing too fancy or expensive. Honestly, the service here is amazing. I NEVER had someone so eager to please a customer. I will probably only do pick up / delivery from now on, but Steve will forever be my "go to guy" for all things bicycle related. read more

Jillian and Emily, I did not want to believe you when I read your reviews about this place, however, you are correct! The Service was terrible and the owner over priced my overhaul on my bike. Originally, Steve, the owner, charged me $69.99 on my bike overhaul. He told me that he would include the tubes on the bike. When my bike was delivered, he told me that the price would be $74.18 with tax, and I was okay with that. It should be noted that he did not give me a receipt! Two days later, a bill showed up for $127.29. I told Steve that he overcharged me by $53.11. To this, he replied that he made a mistake and would refund me $20 dollars for the tubes that he originally said would be free. I asked Steve about the other $30 dollars, and he claimed that this went towards the bike chain. I was VERY upset. He never stated this after he gave me my final price of $74.18. This was not the price we agreed to, and I knew that this would happen since I did not receive a bill! On another note, when I called the store after they picked up my bike, Steve was yelling in the background, asking why I was calling so early. This is not the way to do business. Long story short, I was scammed! BEWARE of Michigan Bicycles! They are not a good retail bike store! I will never bring my bike here again. read more

Don't bother taking in or buying an old bike from here. I purchased a really good looking Raleigh from the mid-seventies from this place. They offered to clean it up, and "go through" it for 20 more bucks. I was happy to oblige. When I got the bike back, it shifted horribly. The crank also broke totally free. So much for them going through it. I took it back in, and asked them to take care of it. They said it needed a new crank, and they'd take care of it. When I went back to pick it up, they had ground the shit out of it, and maybe welded a little. I don't really know what, but it looked terrible. I took it home again. Guess what, it started shifting all by itself, and the tube was shot in the rear. I took it back once again, and got kind of rude. I had said that the bike spent more time in my trunk, than on the road. So, they put a tube in it, and suggested I get new peddles. New peddles, ARE YOU F&%ING kidding me?! The bike is still in my possession, and it still a P.O.S. Now I have to pay another bike shop to fix it correctly. So far I am looking at around $100. I wouldn't really mind too much, paying someone to fix a bike, had I not payed someone (that sold it to me) already. Since they don't give out receipts, good luck trying to prove anything, or get a refund. Don't go here. read more

To me, it's just customer service 101 to do 2 simple things: 1) greet or acknowledge the customer 2) let them know you'll be with them next, any questions? or whenever You can do this without making the customer feel like you're being pushy. They're in my neighborhood, local, independent... whatever. Waited a very long time before anyone greeted or acknowledged me. The owner was chewing the fat with a customer, but you really couldn't tell which of them worked there. Some kid asked me what I was looking for, but then didn't have a clue how to help. When owner did eventually come over, he immediately took a phone call and kept ignoring me. Stood there for another few minutes and left. read more

This place is awful. My husband and I wandered in one day, and saw a pair of Raleigh Superbe 3 speeds for sale, and we had to have them. We put a down payment on them, and told him we would be back at the end of the week to finish paying and pick them up. During this time, he called my husband and informed him that the original wheel sets with dynohubs (the coolest part) would not be included, unless we wanted to pay $200 a set for them. I called back and told him we didn't want the bikes if that was the case, and he changed his mind and sold us the bikes. We picked them up, went to ride them, and discovered the back tube was bulging out on my husband's bike, and it popped. I called Steve and he told me it was my fault, but he would fix it. We took the bike back to him, and he changed the tube, using a power drill piece to tighten the wheel! He obviously doesn't care about proper bike maintenance, and he is incredibly rude once he has your money. Next time I bought bikes, I went to the Schwinn store down the street, and the owner had a laminated news article from when Steve was arrested for stealing bicycles! read more

This place is, unfortunately, NOT a good bike shop. I very much want to support a local, independent shop. But I will not go to this place again. I have been here a number of times, but today's visit was my last. I just purchased a greenfield kickstand (KS2). The guy at the counter yelled back to another guy and asked how much? He said, "$14.95." Then the back room guy continued, "just call it $15 because you have to do tax if you print a receipt." So the front guy tells me: "we'll make it $15." I paid him cash and he went back to vacuuming. I looked around the store and also noticed that there were very few price tags listed on anything. Now that I'm home I looked up the price of a Greenfield KS2 kickstand and most prices--even at nearby brick and mortar stores are $8. I don't mind a place making a profit--but I believe I've been ripped off. I don't know how this place continues to be in operation--but perhaps by not collecting sales tax and charging twice as much for a kickstand--they skim by. I will never go here again and I will also share my experience with other bikers. I'm sad that this local shop may not make it--but these are not the features of a shop that will be successful. I wonder if they realize that making $7 on a kickstand would have such an effect... I'll go a bit farther next time to the ferndale bike shop. you should too! read more

Went in to make a minor purchase for a very common product. The item I wanted to purchase sells for $3.99 at most major stores, Meijer, Target, Dunhams....his price was $9.95. When I balked at the price, he asked "what did you expect, like $3.00?" I said "yes, exactly". "inflation man, inflation" is what he said. So much for trying to support my local bike shop. In my opinion DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE. About 3 weeks ago I went in and ask if they can fix on scooters and the guy said yes and he will pick it up. He scheduled a time to pick it up, never showed up or called. Next day I called them, he said the guy will call me back in 20mins, never called back, never showed up. The next day I rented a U-Haul and took it up there myself, they had it for about a week and called and said it was fixed, so I Go up there to get it and it wouldn't start. Next day he called and said it was fixed, this time he brought it to me, it was running. Next day I got up and it wouldn't start. Called them and he said the guy will call me back in 20mins, never called back. Next day I called them, he finally came to pick it back up. Next day he said it was fixed, he brought it to me. I drove it 2 times, the second time it cut off on me in the middle of traffic, had to get it towed home cause no one answered there phone at this shop. Called the next day, he got smart wit me and said the guy will call me back in 20mins, it's been almost 2 days now and no one has call me back, they charged me $350 to fix my bike and it's not fixed. I'm currently trying to sue them for all my money back. read more

HORRIBLE PLACE. They will just try to rip you off and get the most money they can out of you. I took my scooter in to get looked at because it would start up and then die within a few seconds. They had it for 2 days and then told me that my scooter was going to need some engine work because the compression rings were toast. They said it wasn't even really worth the work, at that point I might as well buy a new scooter. They offered to buy my Scooter for $100 as long as I bought one of their Scooters. I ended up taking my scooter home, and having a friend look at it. THE ONLY THING WRONG WAS THE EXHAUST WAS CLOGGED. My friend literally took a wire cleaner and put it in and out of the exhaust. The scooter fired up instantly and was back to being brand new. To me it seems like they knew that was the issue, tried to get my scooter for $100 and had me buy one of theirs for $700. Then they probably would of unclogged the exhausted and sold mine for 4x what they got it for. DO NOT GO HERE read more

I was looking for a bike for my 6 year old son. Didn't want to spend a ton of money and didn't feel like going to some giant box store to get irritated and maybe save $20 on some junk. Found MBC on-line. I had seen the store front and was skeptical (bad yellow paint job), but the reviews were good. So we dropped in and a nice guy by the name of Al hooked us up. He showed us several new bikes and a bunch on consignment. We ended up getting a great Trek (albeit slightly used) for less money than we would have spent on a crappy new bike somewhere else. They also tuned it up and added some new grips to make it look good as new. My son absolutely loves it! Basically the store is one giant shop floor, so it's a little messy and jammed full with bikes. I guess they also sell scooters as they were assembling a bunch. My kids got a kick out of the custom bikes they were working on (low riders and trick bikes etc.). Naturally, they offer an assortment of bike accessories as well. Cool place and worth a look. read more

Although they were cordial and friendly when I took my bike in for an overhaul and new tubes and tires, the result was not ideal. I picked up the bike, and when I returned home and took it out of the back of the vehicle I noticed there were no caps on the tube stems - not a big deal. When I went back out to the garage 2 hours later, no air in the front tire. I'm ok with that, fill up the tire, take it for a spin - things seem ok. 4 days later, no air in the front tire. Take it back to the shop. The gentleman heard my complaint, took the tire into the back and replaced the tube and put stem caps on both. However, while the first man is assisting me, and making me a satisfied customer, another "gentleman" Owner? Comes out of the back room to tell me that they don't guarantee tubes - they're just doing this to "be nice". Don't do me any favors dude - had you done the job correctly in the first place, I wouldn't need to be placated!!!! Will not return, nor recommend. After they picked up my bike, it was returned within 5 hrs. For $150 I had only changed tires and re-taped handlebars with cheap plastic tape, not the cloth I once had. "Steve", the owner, claimed they would replace chain and brakes, and do overhaul. They did nothing that could be identified as a repair or overhaul that I could see. No brakes, gears or chain re-greased. Refused to answer questions, rude, and hung up phone. Complete rip-off! Do not go there! read more

I took my 3-month-old bike to Michigan Bicycle because it was not changing gears smoothly. The shop owner Steve test road the bike, came back and stated that three spokes were broken, that the rim could not be repaired and also my back cog was worn out. He stated that for a new back rim, back cog and gear adjustments it would cost $119.00 (127.00 with tax). Trusting him I agreed to have the work done. 30 minutes later as I test rode the bike the chain got caught in the gears. After another 30 minutes I test rode the bike again and had the same gear issues that I brought the bike in for. Steve stated that the bike gears will break in. I paid (using American Express) and left the shop. As I put my bike on my car, a man came up to me and warned me "that bike shop is a rip off". At this point I returned to the shop and asked for the parts taken off my bike (rear rim & back cog). He reluctantly gives me the rim and states that the rear cog was not that bad and he put it back on the bike. At this point I began to believe that this place was a "rip off". The next day I took the rim to another bike shop (Roll Models in Allen Park, Michigan) who stated that the rim just needed 3 spokes and could still be used. They put the spokes in the rim and put it back on my bike and adjusted my gears for $25.00!! The next day, I took the rim back to Michigan Bicycle and spoke with Al. Steve was not there. Al stated that he had to call Steve for permission to give me a refund for the rim. I spoke with Steve on the telephone and he stated that he would not give a refund under any circmstances and hung up on me. Al and another worker just shook their heads. It was apparent that they thought that Steve should have given me a refund. (The rim was still brand new). I left the shop and immediately called American Express. They began an investigation and stated that I would not be responsible for the charge because it was apparent that the Michigan Bicycle shop engaged in "bad faith". Oh, I forgot to mention that this bike was mail order and Michigan Bicycle put it together. Also the bike had Disc Brakes and also made a loud squeek when I stopped. Steve and Al stated that it was just the way the brakes were designed. The bike shop who repaired my rim put alcohol on the disc bikes and no more squeek!! NEVER, NEVER, NEVER go to this store. Their prices are high, the lie about the needed repairs and are poor, poor poor bike mechanics. And they are not very nice people. It's a shame, I wanted to support this neighborhood bike shop. Please god never go to this shop. You have probably seen me around on my black and white scooter last summer. I bought a scooter from Steve, aka Gino for $900 last summer. It ran ok for about a month. Then I started having to put $200 a month into it. he will pick your scooter and bikes up to scam you and take your money. Steve told me he rebuilt my carb and a lot of other things... I just put $300 more into it and when he brought it back my scooter wouldn't even start. So i took my scooter to Blackbeard Powers sports only to find out my carb cost $19 and can't be "rebuilt" and all the work Steve SAID HE DID.. HE DIDN'T. when I called Steve to ask him about this he got very rude and defensive and hung up. but prior he said i could trade it in on another scooter(so he could resell my broken scooter to someone else ). And if you don't read ALL the posts Steve aka Gino was arrested for STEALING bikes. The guy at the Schwinn in Oak Park bike shop has the article. WARNING TO ALL STAY AWAY.
