Shes not going to hold your hand, and if she doesn't want to do a particular project she wont do it- I once came in wanting to get alot of drapes done, and I thought she was rude, and gave me an expensive quote- but to be honest there weren't many people who wanted to do that project, and I had to pay a bit to get it done anyways. Since then, I have come in for many different things- holes in cashmere sweaters, dress alterations, and I have even gotten same day service from her for a dress I needed that night. All of these things came out great, and each time it was actually affordable. I can understand that she comes off as rude, and maybe sometimes is a little bit, but her work and her fair prices keep me coming back! read more

Michelle is incredibly good at her job. She mended and modify 4 pieces of cloth for me and my daughter. BUT she is indeed incredibly rude and have a bad temper. She shouted at me because I had lost my stub to get my dress back. I had forgotten to bring my check book or cash and there you go, another scream. When I got back from the bank she didn't even talk to me. I passed on the dress to see if it was fitting right and then left the cash on the counter. Two tailors, both alike in dignity, in fair Noe Valley, where we lay our scene... A request for alterations at Michelle's Tailor is NOT for the fainthearted. Inexplicable anger behind the counter could be off-putting for those who do not go in sporting for a fight. For wimps like me, there's a MUCH more courteous establishment in the neighborhood, one who quoted half the price and half the turn-around time (with gales of laughter and unselfconscious smiles). I'm a realist who understands that elite service sometimes inspires a haughty demeanor in a high-performance provider, but the unapologetic aggression at the counter of Michelle's Tailor left me with no inclination to test the theory. I'm leaving 2 stars instead of 1, because I recognize my own role, the social deficiency I brought through the door. I actually don't require people be friendly in business, just professional and courteous, but I crater in the face of those who don't even bother with that arguably low bar. I have been bringing all of my tailoring here for four years and have always been extremely happy with the results. Michelle has worked on all my clothes -- from my Theory work suits and skirts, to jeans, to ordinary repair work -- doing everything beautifully. She has also taken in a silk pleated skirt which could not have been easy, and she has hemmed all my jeans perfectly, so that I can wear them with heels and with sneakers. She has also repaired moth holes and worn spots in sweaters and did a great job fixing the lining of my husband's winter coat. For the quality of work, the price is very reasonable. Also, she is fairly rapid -- you can usually get your items back in a week. Michelle has always been courteous with me and other customers I have seen in the store. read more

I've been using her services for 5? 6? years. Not one complaint from me, my husband, my friends that also drop off their stuff from time to time. Her prices are fair, service prompt, her quality great. I think (though not 100% sure) from what conversations we've had and what I manage to overhear, she's a single mom (I always used to see her daughter doing homework in the shop) and she works hard to support herself and her daughter. read more

Michelle does not want dry cleaning business. It was very strange. Not sure why she is so rude other than she must have more than enough business. Maybe she's a good tailor and that's why she isn't interested in taking cleaning jobs (at $4 a piece), although from reading the other reviews that does not seem to be consistently true. I sort of wish I had not read the other reviews before beginning this review...The owner, Michelle is not going to win any Miss Congeniality contests any time soon. She doesn't have much to say and I sometimes think she just wishes I would go away. The first time I went to see Michelle, I needed a pair of pants hemmed in a rush for an event that night. She not only got the job done, she didn't charge me much to do it either. I decided I should try her again for other alterations. I had a pair of pants that my old tailor hemmed the legs two different lengths...that just doesn't work! Michelle fixed the pants and hemmed four other pairs in two days! They are perfect. I understand that she can be harsh, not overly communicative and bit cantankerous...I chalk up to a cultural thing and think nothing of it because the shop does a great job at what they set out to do and that is alterations. If I want stimulating conversation, I'll go to my hair stylist! read more

I have been going to Michelle's for years. She is an excellent tailor. I am thin so most trousers I purchase have to be altered. Mostly the waist, seat, and crotch. She always does an amazing job. All of my trousers look custom to my body type. I could care less if she is friendly or chatty. She is quick and she does a great job. I am not there to be her friend. I have never found her rude. Perhaps a little curt. If you want good quality alterations go to Michelle's. read more

For easy alterations, basic hemming and repairs take your things here. She gives honest recommendations on how things will turn out and has creatively fixed fit issues I've had on multiple occasions. After going to her for years, she has warmed up and while I know customer service isn't her strong suit her turn around time can't be beat. read more

I also would give it a zero, if I could. We have gone to Michelles on and on for a few years because of the close location, despite her cold personality. The last straw was when she totally screwed up hemming jeans that I bought in europe costing over $200. They were hemmed too short, and looked horrible when we tried to redo them. I've been a customer of Michelle's for 22 years, since she opened. Over the years, she has tailored my suits and shirts for many special occasions, and reworked my favorite worn out leather jackets, and jeans. Her most impressive work for me was when she completely de-constructed my brown leather aviator, reversed and reworked the pieces, and re-created the whole jacket like new. Always reasonable, on time, and perfect quality. She also takes great care of my sons' tailoring, now that they are young men. I can't speak for the reviewers who have had an issue with Michelle, but as a business owner myself, I know bad service often comes to angry people without patience more often than to those who respect those they deal with. I went in because I'm ordering a bridesmaid dress and no doubt will need alterations so I went in and asked to be measured. I asked how long it would take for the alterations if I brought something in and she ignored my question because she was looking at her tv. She wanted to charge me five dollars to get a simple bust/waist/hips measurement done. She was incredibly rude when I walked in. I will not be be getting my alterations done here, and will not be returning. read more

The owner here is very rude. I once couldn't find my ticket number and she said she wouldn't look for my clothes. She then hung up on me. When I called back..hoping it was some sort of technical issue, she didn't pick up the phone. I would never go back to this place again. Even though I no longer work or live in Noe Valley I still bring my mending/alterations to Michelle. Occasionally I've strayed & have always been disappointed. Michelle mends my jeans beautifully every time (sturdy denim is difficult to work with, I've had more than one tailor refuse to do the work) & she's sewn custom, lined curtains for me--truly gorgeous! But because of the slight language issue & her rapid transaction style, I've always diagramed & written down what I want for any custom work. I've been using her for over 10 years & she has always done exactly what I asked beautifully. Michelle is abrupt & ALL business (in US terms: rude), but after years of responding in my super pleasant, Midwest manner, she actually chit-chatted with me! For at least 5 minutes! And I was thinking: I like the short & to the point better. I'm always in a pathetic rush, I wouldn't miss the chit-chat. She could probably use a people-skilled receptionist, but she's works (c'mon! we're talking serious, hands-on, skilled labor) independently & the cost is surely prohibitive (ask any small business owner in this city...). AND there's another big chance of miscommunication with a 3rd party involved. Long Additional Note here: The customer service we're accustomed to in the States is for a good part, because of the leisure we have, to be pleasant during the course of our day. I also work in customer service & it's gets wearing to constantly be pleasant (when I've had 2 or 3 no-shows that day), but because it's how I'VE been socialized, it's easier for me to put a face on it for the customers. Personally, I give a lot of wiggle room, customer service-wise, to those who may not be from the States. We live a seriously cushy life here & if you pay attention to what's been going on all over this planet, just in our lifetimes, it ain't pretty, it ain't the least bit comfortable, for most folks. If you've been to a thriving, rapidly developing country in SE Asia it's chaos & super rough. If you're not one of the noble few (shoot, even driving in Rome is chaos, compared to the States), one had better be tough & ruthless, if not corrupt, to get a toehold. Not everyone comes from the same place as me, though, & THAT is what makes this life, this city, such a brilliant, trying, interesting adventure! So give Michelle's distinctive demeanor some consideration. Not pity, consideration. Now, poor work? That'd be a different story "-). We all have a story that makes up who we are & I, honestly, should show much more grace, with all that's been given me. Anyhow, if you've made it this far: congrats! Michelle gets a bad rap about her temper but I've yet to witness it. I brought her a pair of jeans purchased at Rabat down the street (based on their local recommendation) and she hemmed them perfectly. Just took in a pair of wool slacks and a pair of 4 year old jeans that ripped near the crotch and will report back with her handywork. read more

I've been going to her for nearly 20 years. I took a pair of dress trousers with a ripped seam on one side to her for repair. She said that she could do it, and made me pay IN ADVANCE, which I did. She was very rude and not the least bit gracious or helpful, like she didn't trust me. I have been there before, and she had never before asked me to pay in advance. She did an adequate job, and that is good, but I don't think that I will go back to her again. Even though her work seemed adequate, her manner is so rude, and I felt offended that I had to pay in advance. I will not do that again! i brought a pair of jeans in a while back to have it shortened and the waist taken in. when i picked up the jeans i saw that the thread used was not the same color as the original, not great, but no one else will probably notive that. my big complaint is that i cannot sit down for more than 5 minutes in these jeans because it feels like the blood circulation to my groin is getting cut off after a few minutes. try nancy's tailoring in the TL, i'm a new fan. read more

I have been going to Michelle's Tailor for as long as she has been in the neighborhood. She has hemmed for me, repaired holes, taken in jackets, etc. and always done excellent work. I can see that she is not chatty or smiley or forthcoming in the American style, but I have always found her quite welcoming. I don't know what the one stars are about frankly. read more

With simple hemming they do a good job (but charge kind of a lot, I think), but with more complex tailoring I've found them to be just OK.

I had one alteration done for my girlfriend. She stated before I dropped off that she would be able to fix if it didn't fit properly. When I returned and explained that my girlfriend was out of town for awhile, she gave this 24 hour rule which is ridiculous. Overpriced and poor service. I will not be going back. read more

Brought in two blazers (nice, lined blazers) to have the sleeves shortened. Michelle was efficient and altered them for $30 a coat. It was exactly the price I imagined. Definitely affordable. The work was well done and completed in a few days, as promised. I'll be going back. read more

I have been to Michelle's a number of times, and like many of the reviewers have said, she was unfriendly, but seemed to do fine work (though her prices did seem high.) Recently, I went in to get an adjustment on a waist band for maternity pants. I considered doing it myself as I am a beginner sewer, but I don't have a serger for edge of the elastic so I decided to go to Michelle's. Michelle tries to tell me how complicated my request is going to be (to jack up the cost, I'm sure) and I try to explain how simple I believe it will be. As I'm showing her what I mean, she walks away and starts sewing something else. Then she tells me she can't do it and that I should go somewhere else. Is that any way to treat customers? Her nasty attitude is completely uncalled for and I will never be using her again, despite the fact that I live 3 blocks from her. And, by the way, I did make the adjustment myself and it wasn't that complicated, even for someone like me with less than a year of sewing experience. read more

I took a ballroom dance costume into Michelle for alterations because she was recommended by a friend. She asked I go out and purchase my own bra pads which I did and mailed them the next day. I live far out of the area so I had a friend pick up the dress for me a week later. The first thing I noticed before trying the dress on was that the bra pads were stitched in upside down. They were a push up type and the extra padding was on the top instead of underneath. Also the hand stitching went all the way through the dress causing wrinkling and a poor result. I had also asked Michelle to take in the side seams and underarms as the dress was too big. Now I could barely zip up and move in my dress. I paid $100.00 for these alterations. I called Michelle and explained that I took the dress to another seamstress locally as I needed it within a week for a competition. The other seamstress charged me $60.00 (which included the cost of bra pads) to redo Michelle's alterations. When I asked Michelle if she would work with me on the price a little she replied. "No. You have to bring here." read more

Yikes!! I took a coat here to ask about having the shoulder pads replaced. The woman was watching a television show with the volume turned up so loud I could not even hear myself speak. She finally turned it down, but only after I said how loud it was. When I tried the coat on for her, she insisted I needed more tailoring than a simple shoulder pad replacement. I said I'd prefer to start with the pads and see how it looks. She became extremely agitated and started ranting at me that the coat would not look good without the extra alteration. She finally agreed to start by replacing the shoulder pads. I asked if I could see the shoulder pads she was going to put into the coat, so we could make sure they were the right size for me, but she said she did not have them in the shop. Concerned about whether the pads would fit my frame, I asked what would happen if she put them in and I didn't like them. She flew off the handle and started yelling at me, saying over and over again, seriously at least six or seven times, "You don't trust me!" She then accused me of trying to get away with not paying for her services. Needless to say, I left and took my coat with me. Wow. Scary place. Scary lady. read more

This by far was one of the worst customer service experiences I have had. I need an emergency tailor job to hem pants and a suit jacket for a last minute trip. I call Michelle on the phone and told her my situation and she said she could do it while I waited however would charge me 30% more. I agreed given I knew she would have to hem the paints and shorten my sleeves for a new suit I bought. I live a few blocks away, so she said you need to come down right now. I got in my car and drove there immediately. She fitted me quickly presented the Bill and said she could have it by the end of the day. I explained that when we spoke on the phone I told her I was getting on a plane and needed to wait for it. And she agreed to do that. That is why I was standing in front of her 5 minutes after we got off the phone. She said sorry I am too busy, I can not do it and walked away. Do not ever use the services of this establishment. Not only did she not help me when she said she would, she wasted the time I could of used to find someone who could actually help. read more
